Launch of Soyuz-2.1b ILV from OneWeb spacecraft took place at Vostochny

In accordance with the  decision of the State Commission, on April 22, 2021, the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle with the Fregat upper stage and 36 spacecraft of the OneWeb satellite company was transported from the technical facility to the launch complex of the Vostochny cosmodrome and installed in the launch system. Its  launch is scheduled for April 26 at 01:14 Moscow time.

Today at 01:00 Moscow time (07:00 local time), the transportation of the space rocket to the launch complex began. At the same time, a joint crew of specialists from subsidiaries of the State Corporation Roscosmos began work on the preparation of launch equipment. A few hours later, the rocket was installed in the launch system, and a collision was made with a mobile service tower, which is designed to prepare space rockets of the Soyuz-2 family for launch.

Within the framework of the first launch day, it is planned to dock filling and pneumatic communications, autonomous checks of the Fregat upper stage designed and manufactured by the S.А. Lavochkin (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation), conducting inspections and preparing OneWeb spacecraft for the upcoming launch on Monday. In the second half of the day, the assembly of the measurement system diagrams, the control system and the fuel level measurement system will be carried out, followed by autonomous checks of the Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle produced by the Progress Rocket and Space Center (part of Roskosmos).

The procedure for the removal of the launch vehicle was observed by representatives of the management of the State Corporation Roscosmos and its subsidiary Glavkosmos, as well as authorized representatives of foreign companies: Arianespace, Starsem and OneWeb.

The OneWeb spacecraft are developed by AIRBUS Defense and Space. The devices as part of the launch on April 26 were manufactured by OneWeb Satellites (50% of the shares are owned by AIRBUS Defense and Space and 50% by OneWeb) at a plant in Florida (USA). Starting from 2020, the OneWeb project is being implemented by Bharti Global (Republic of India) and the UK government (each own 42.2% of OneWeb shares, the remaining shares are distributed between Softbank (Japan) - 12.3% and Hughes Network Systems (USA) - 2.6%). The controlling shareholder is the UK government.

MOSCOW, April 22. /TASS/. A Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket, loaded with British OneWeb communications satellites, has been delivered to a launch pad at the Vostochny Cosmodrome, the press service of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos announced in a statement on Thursday.

"Based on the reports on the rocket and ground infrastructure preparation, the State Commission members decided to roll out the space rocket from the assembly and testing facility and verticalize it at the launch complex on April 21, 2021," the statement reads.

"The rollout to the launch site is scheduled at 22:00 UTC, after that Roscosmos subsidiaries specialists will begin working in accordance with the first launch day schedule," the Russian space agency reported. "Today, the launch complex is being prepared to receive the space rocket."

According to Roscosmos, "The Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket launch with the Fregat upper stage and a batch of 36 OneWeb satellite company spacecraft is scheduled for April 25, 2021 at 22:14 UTC."

"This will be the third fully commercial launch from the Vostochny Cosmodrome, implemented by the French company Arianespace for OneWeb from this cosmodrome," the statement from the Russian space agency reads.

The first six OneWeb satellites were orbited by a Soyuz-ST carrier rocket from the Kourou spaceport in French Guiana on February 28, 2019. Another 34 satellites were delivered into outer space on February 7, 2020 and the same amount on March 21 from the Baikonur spaceport.

Head of Russia’s space agency Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin told TASS in late March that all of 36 OneWeb communications satellites, which were launched from the Vostochny Cosmodrome atop a Russian Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket were successfully delivered into the designated orbits with the help of the rocket’s Fregat booster.

OneWeb satellites were launched from the Vostochny spaceport for the first time in December 2020. A total of 36 space vehicles were put into orbit. Overall, the UK company intends to deliver around 600 satellites into a near-Earth orbit.

OneWeb’s renewed agreement with the French Arianespace that acts as the launch operator stipulates the lift-off of 16 Russian Soyuz carrier rockets from the Kourou, Vostochny and Baikonur spaceports in 2020-2022. Each launch allows orbiting 34-36 OneWeb satellites.

On Friday, April 23, 2021, at the Vostochny cosmodrome, the calculations of subsidiaries of the Roscosmos State Corporation began work on the second launch day's schedule as part of the launch of the OneWeb spacecraft of mission No. 45 . The day before, early in the morning , a Soyuz-2.1b space rocket was taken out to the launch site and a 52-meter mobile service tower hit it.

Note that the service tower weighing 1600 tons is the tallest structure of the Vostochny cosmodrome. Work platforms installed inside allow reaching the highest level of the rocket up to a height of 37 meters. This unique vertical structure is used for the first time in the history of Russian cosmonautics. Its analogue was first built by Roscosmos specialists at the  Guiana Space Center in French Guiana.

On Friday, the active phase of preparation for the launch, which is scheduled for April 26, 2021, continues. At 02:00 Moscow time (08:00 local time), the specialists took their jobs and began to check the initial state. At the moment, the control of the initial state and the charge of the batteries of the OneWeb spacecraft for launch has been carried out, as well as the control set for the launch readiness of the upper stage "Fregat", which was developed at the S.А. Lavochkin (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation).

In the afternoon, general tests will take place, during which the launch and flight of the launch vehicle will be simulated until the head unit separates in near-earth orbit. At the next stage of the prelaunch preparation, the analysis of telemetric information and the final operations at the launch complex are carried out.

Preparations for the launch, which is scheduled for April 26, 2021 from the Vostochny cosmodrome, do not stop even on weekends. On Sunday, specialists from Roscosmos State Corporation subsidiaries work according to the schedule of the fourth launch day. The main scope of work today is the pouring of the filling system with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide (ERP) and the cooling of the fuel.

The launch crew of the cosmodrome took their jobs at 02:50 Moscow time (08:50 local time) and started checking the initial state. At 03:00 Moscow time, the cooling of the fuel began, then - the dosage of highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide in the boilers ZhZ VPV. At 04:00 Moscow time, Roscosmos specialists monitored the initial state and charge of the batteries of the OneWeb spacecraft.

At 06:00 Moscow time, the pouring of the refueling system with highly concentrated hydrogen peroxide began, then - the attachment of the refueling hoses to the space rocket and the final operations at the launch complex itself.

The same evening, a meeting of the State Commission will take place, following which decisions will be made on refueling the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with propellant components and its further launch. The launch of the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with the Fregat upper stage and a new batch of 36 spacecraft from the British company OneWeb is scheduled at 01:14 Moscow time on April 26, 2021.

On Monday, April 26, 2021, at 01:14:08 Moscow time, the launch crews of the subsidiaries of the State Corporation Roscosmos at the Vostochny cosmodrome launched the Soyuz-2.1b carrier rocket with the Fregat upper stage and 36 new spacecraft company OneWeb in the framework of mission number 45. At 01:23 Moscow time, the upper stage separated from the third stage of the carrier on a suborbital trajectory.

According to the received telemetry information, the launch, separation of the stages and the orbital block were carried out in the normal mode. After that, the Fregat upper stage continued to launch 36 vehicles into a target circular orbit with an altitude of 450 kilometers. Over the next 3 hours and 40 minutes, OneWeb satellites, in accordance with the flight sequence, will be sequentially separated (in groups of four satellites) from the Russian "accelerator" produced by the S.A. Lavochkin (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation).

This launch was the third fully commercial from the Vostochny cosmodrome, implemented by order of the European launch services provider Arianespace and the Russian-French company Starsem for the operator of the innovative satellite constellation OneWeb from the new Russian cosmodrome.

The Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle was created at the Progress Rocket and Space Center (Samara, part of Roskosmos) and is a modification of Soyuz-2. In comparison with variant "1a" it has an engine with increased energy characteristics in the third stage. The Soyuz-2.1b has higher launch accuracy, stability and controllability than the previous version, and an increased payload mass.

Liquid-propellant rocket engines RD-107A and RD-108A are used at the first and second stages of the launch vehicle, and at the third stage, the four-chamber RD-0124. With the help of RD-107 and RD-108 developments of the Scientific and Production Association "Energomash" named after academician V.P. Glushko (part of Roskosmos) reliably ensures the implementation of the domestic program of manned flights and spacecraft launch. To date, work has been carried out to modernize the basic RD-107 engines for the first stage and RD-108 engines for the second stage - 18 modifications for various programs.

A few minutes later, the rocket brought the Fregat upper stage to a suborbital trajectory. It will deliver satellites to orbits with an altitude of about 450 kilometers. From the start of the launch to the end of the operation, according to the company Arianespace , it will take 3 hours 51 minutes 40 seconds.

To bring all the satellites to the calculated points, "Fregat" will need two starts of the engine. The apparatuses will be separated in groups, in total there will be nine departments. Further, they independently, at the expense of their own engines, will go to operating points.

Earlier, OneWeb reported that the April launch will be dedicated to the 60th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin 's flight into space. The first astronaut of the planet is depicted on the mission emblem.

The first launch of Soyuz-2 in 2021 with 36 OneWeb devices from Vostochny was made on March 25. The current start was the second. As a source in the rocket and space industry told RIA Novosti earlier, the next launches are scheduled for May 27 and July 1. The next four cluster launches of 34 OneWeb devices each will take place from Baikonur on August 2 and 26, September 18 and December 23 or 26, 2021.
The contract between Arianespa
ce and OneWeb for 21 launches of Soyuz rockets from the Baikonur, Vostochny and Kuru cosmodromes was signed in June 2015. In September 2020, OneWeb announced a reduction in the number of contracted Soyuz launches to 19. Five have already been completed: two from Baikonur, two from Vostochny and one from Kuru, 146 satellites have been launched into orbit. After the completion of today's mission, there will be 182 vehicles in orbit.

OneWeb expects to begin providing commercial satellite communications services in late 2021, and by the end of 2022, deploy a constellation of 648 satellites, which will provide broadband Internet access to users around the world with full coverage of the Earth's surface .
