THALES ALENIA SPACE TO BUILD AMAZONAS NEXUS FROM HISPASAT, A MORE EFFICIENT AND FLEXIBLE SATELLITE TO ADAPT TO THE EVOLUTION OF THE COMMUNICATIONS MARKET

01/10/2020

The Spanish operator kicks off its new mission Amazonas Nexus, devoted to the mobility and connectivity markets, marking the start of a new generation of satellites with an innovative architecture and higher capacity.

The new satellite, embarks a new generation Digital Transparent Processor (DTP), a technological breakthrough that substantially increases the flexibility of the satellite, allowing its adaptation to eventual changes in the customer’s demand.

Madrid, January 10, 2020  – HISPASAT, the Spanish satellite telecommunications operator, has awarded to Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), the construction of the Amazonas Nexus satellite, which will replace and expand the  capacities of Amazonas 2 satellite, in orbit at 61º West. The contract has been signed today in Madrid, with Thales Alenia Space winning the award against an international field of competitors.

The new High Throughput Satellite (HTS) will enable HISPASAT to access new customers and markets, by delivering high capacity mobility services to the air and maritime transport sectors, among others. In addition, it will continue the provision of services to the current HISPASAT customers that use the capacities of Amazonas 2.

As prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space will be responsible for Amazonas Nexus satellite design, production, testing and in-orbit acceptance tests.

New generation with greater in-orbit flexibility

Amazonas Nexus features, as main novelty, a new generation Digital Transparent Processor (DTP), a technological breakthrough that is essential to increase the geographical flexibility of the mission to respond to eventual evolutions with respect to the initially envisaged commercial scenario.

Thanks to this element, the satellite payload will be digitally processed allowing to assign in-orbit the required capacities at any time, providing the satellite with great resilience to the evolution of the communications market, both in the field of connectivity and data and in the field of contents transmission.

The advanced design, HTS capacity and versatility of Amazonas Nexus make it the most efficient satellite in HISPASAT’s fleet.

The new satellite will have coverage over the whole American continent, the North Atlantic corridor (air and maritime traffic area) and Greenland, and will enable the provision of leading-edge telecommunication services in Ku band. Amazonas Nexus marks the start of a new generation of satellites in HISPASAT’s fleet with an innovative architecture that also features Ka-band capacity to optimize communications between the gateways and the satellite, allowing to multiply the total on-board capacity available for commercial use, thus improving to a great extent the capacity unitary cost with respect to conventional satellites.

Amazonas Nexus will be launched in the second half of 2022.

Based on the Spacebus NEO platform from Thales Alenia Space, the satellite will feature full electric propulsion, making the satellite lighter and contributing to lower the launch cost. With an estimated lifetime of 15 years, 20 kW satellite power and a mass of 4.5 metric tons at launch, Amazonas Nexus will be launched  mid-2022.

Amazonas Nexus is the 3rd  satellite ordered by HISPASAT to Thales Alenia Space, after HISPASAT 1C & 1D, the 7th  satellite based on Spacebus NEO platform and the 5th  embarking a digital transparent processor of 5th generation.

After the contract signature, Rosario Martínez, President of HISPASAT, thanked the support of its new shareholder, Red Eléctrica, to this mission, which will boost the growth of HISPASAT. “This project, which is of great relevance to respond to the continuous growth in the demand for connectivity, would not have been possible without the determined support of HISPASAT shareholders. At the Board of Directors we are convinced that Amazonas Nexus will reinforce our competitive position within the satellite market”, she said.

Miguel Ángel Panduro, CEO of Hispasat, expressed his satisfaction for the agreement reached with Thales Alenia Space, “that will enable us to build the most dynamic and advanced satellite in our fleet and make an important step forward into the digital solutions that will conform the future of satellite technologies,” he stated. “With Amazonas Nexus, HISPASAT continues to innovate to respond to the satellite market and the needs of its customers with the most advanced technology,” Panduro concluded.

“I thank HISPASAT to place their trust in us,” added Jean-Loïc Galle, President and Chief Executive Officer of Thales Alenia Space. “Today’s market volatility needs cutting-edge and future proof technologies. Amazonas Nexus satellite’s design combines ideally the digital agility and dynamicity with the robustness of our satellite  solutions. The recent contracts, awarded to serve the European, Asian and now American markets, demonstrate the valuable benefit of Thales Alenia Space’s digital solutions to our satellite operators’ customers”.

With its coverage over the Atlantic and its high capacity, Amazonas Nexus will reinforce HISPASAT positioning in the air and maritime markets, two growing segments. Its capacities make it also especially well-suited to contribute to cope with the digital divide in Latin America, allowing governments and telecom operators to deploy networks and services in regions with low penetration of terrestrial infrastructures.

According to market analyses, the demand for geostationary data capacity in the American continent will multiply by a factor of 5 over the next ten years* thanks to the boost of verticals such as mobility, corporate communications, expansion of mobile networks and connectivity. With this new mission, HISPASAT focuses on these verticals and strengthens its commitment in the American continent, which represents over 65% of its income.

HISPASAT has reached several commercial agreements for long-term capacity leasing with operators and service providers in the governmental and airline connectivity segments. These agreements stand for almost 30% of the capacity embarked on Amazonas Nexus

https://www.exim.gov/news/exim-approves-807-million-support-spacex-launch-services-and-brokered-insurance-for-hispasat

WASHINGTON – The Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (EXIM) unanimously approved $80.7 million in EXIM financing to support launch services by SpaceX and also U.S.-brokered launch and initial in-orbit insurance for Hispasat Canarias S.L.U., a subsidiary of Hispasat, S.A., of Spain. These EXIM-supported services will help Hispasat to deploy a new satellite, Amazonas Nexus. The EXIM financing, which may take the form of a direct loan or a loan guarantee, is estimated to support approximately 500 American jobs in California, Florida, Texas, and Virginia.

The transaction is the first EXIM financing of a satellite-related export since 2015, before EXIM was forced to pause board-approved transactions for several years due to the lack of a board quorum. Today’s announcement marks an important step in EXIM’s re-emergence following the agency’s historic seven-year reauthorization by Congress in 2019. EXIM’s support is needed for this transaction to provide long-term financing for Hispasat that was unavailable from commercial lenders. EXIM’s support also counters potential export credit agency support for a French launch-services competitor, Arianespace.

“This transaction signals the return of EXIM in support of the U.S. satellite-related industry. The need for export credit agency support is well-established in this industry, and the availability of EXIM’s financing enables SpaceX and other U.S. exporters to remain competitive,” said EXIM Acting First Vice President and Chairman James C. Cruse.

“It is exciting to be supporting SpaceX as they launch this new satellite for Hispasat. This is precisely where EXIM plays a critical role, supporting high-tech U.S. companies and their workers in an intensively competitive environment. This transaction is a fine example of how EXIM is available for U.S. exporters, especially when the decisions of international buyers hinge upon the availability of government-provided export credit,” said EXIM Board Member Judith D. Pryor.

“During the present contraction in financial markets, EXIM continues to carry out its mission by providing financing when private lenders lack the capacity to do so,” said EXIM Board Member and former Congressman Spencer Bachus. “In addition, one very positive outcome of the action we took today will be the preservation of approximately 500 U.S.-based jobs.”

The high-throughput satellite, being built by Thales Alenia Space of France, will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellite will replace Hispasat’s Amazonas-2 satellite, which will reach the end of its 15-year life in 2024. The satellite will offer an increased capacity for new business and enable Hispasat to expand its customer base and enter new markets by supplying high-capacity mobile services. The satellite construction contract was awarded in late 2019 and is being financed by Bpifrance.

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation (SpaceX), headquartered in Hawthorne, California, designs and manufactures rockets and provides satellite launch services. SpaceX provides a route to orbit for companies deploying satellites and also takes supplies to the International Space Station. The company has approximately 8,000 employees.

In the case of our satellite business, we've invested EUR 52.2 million in the Amazonas Nexus satellite, which is a satellite with HTS technology

Quote
Now as you know, we are currently working on the design and manufacture of the new Amazonas Nexus satellite. Now that satellite is expected to enter the testing phase in 2022 and should be fully operational in mid-2023.

Quote
The evidence is that as of today, this is just 2.5 years -- still 2.5 years before its launch. This satellite already has a significant prelaunch revenue commitment of more than 20%

The anticipated launch date is kinda all over the place. I’ve seen mid 2022, end 2022, and now possibly 2023.

It looks like a bit of a translation issue though, and confusion between the service date and the launch date.

Boosting will prob take six months, similar to Turksat.

HISPASAT’s Amazonas Nexus Satellite will embed the Pathfinder 2 mission for the United States Space Force

Quote
HISPASAT, the Spanish telecommunications satellite operator, has won a contract with Artel to embed the U.S. Space Force’s Space and Missile Systems Center’s Pathfinder 2 mission on its Amazonas Nexus Satellite, which is expected to be launched in mid-2022. The project is led by Artel, the global secure communications network systems integrator certified by the US Department of Defense and supported by Hunter Communications, the satellite communication solutions provider.

For the record, Pathfinder 1 mission was SES AMC-3.

Quote
Pathfinder One was a success for the Air Force, and it’s clear that the military took notice of the program’s accomplishments. But the military may not have been the only organization to observe the lessons learned from Pathfinder One. Private industry recognized the innovative use of inclined orbit bandwidth as well.

Just a few weeks ago, Space News published an article disclosing that Global Eagle Entertainment, one of the world’s leaders in in-flight entertainment, “…had purchased all the capacity on an undisclosed satellite to support aeronautical customers, in particular Southwest Airlines, the company’s largest customer.”

That satellite was later revealed to be SES satellite AMC-3, which Space News says, “…carries 24 Ku-band transponders and launched in September 1997 on an Atlas 2A rocket.” SES will operate the satellite and provide support for Global Eagle.

HISPASAT’s new satellite has passed all the tests during the construction process and is now at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.

Amazonas Nexus is expected to be sent into orbit in February.

The Amazonas Nexus, the new satellite of Redeia’s operator HISPASAT, is now in Cape Canaveral, Florida ahead of its targeted launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 next month. The fleet’s new satellite has been transferred from the installations of Thales Alenia Space in Cannes (France), where it was manufactured before being transported to the space centre on board of an Antonov cargo plane. The satellite has been locked in a special container adapted to transport heavy components and whose characteristics guarantee its safety.

The satellite has been brought to Cape Canaveral after passing all the functional and environmental tests conducted during the construction process. The last tests will be conducted at the launch site to confirm that the satellite functions properly after being transferred. After that, the satellite will be mated to the launch vehicle for liftoff.
