Hi anik, I had a question regarding Progress & Soyuz docking ports used for next few months.
Per your schedule, the following events are noted:

August - Progress M-64 undocking (from Zarya)
August/September - Soyuz TMA-12 relocation (from Pirs to Zarya) [Volkov, Kononenko, Chamitoff]
September 5 (TBD) - Jules Verne undocking (from Zvezda)
September 10 - Progress M-65 launch
September 12 - Progress M-65 docking (to Pirs)
October 12 - Soyuz TMA-13 launch [Lonchakov, Fincke, R.Garriott]
October 14 - Soyuz TMA-13 docking (to Zvezda)
October 23 - Soyuz TMA-12 undocking (from Zarya) and landing [Volkov, Kononenko, R.Garriott]
November 3 - Soyuz TMA-13 relocation (from Zvezda to Zarya) [Lonchakov, Fincke, Chamitoff]

Two Soyuz relocations are required. Would it not make more sense to keep Soyuz TMA-12 on Pirs and follow sequence as below:

September 5 (TBD) - Jules Verne undocking (from Zvezda)
September 10 - Progress M-65 launch
September 12 - Progress M-65 docking (to Zvezda)
October - Progress M-64 undocking (from Zarya)
October 12 - Soyuz TMA-13 launch [Lonchakov, Fincke, R.Garriott]
October 14 - Soyuz TMA-13 docking (to Zarya)
October 23 - Soyuz TMA-12 undocking (from Pirs) and landing [Volkov, Kononenko, R.Garriott]

Avoids the need for both Soyuz relocations and keeps Soyuz away from Zvezda port, as needed during shuttle missions. Any reason why this philosophy is not followed?

I've noticed the Soyuz relocation seems to put the craft closer to the center of the ISS, making a shorter escape route in case of emergency.  I am wondering if this is the case, or perhaps it keeps the Soyuz closer to the COG of the ISS (durings reboosts, for example).

Pirs is the airlock for Russian EVAs. That of course requires depressurizing Pirs, which would cut off the remaining ISS crew from any Soyuz docked to Pirs. Therefore whenever Soyuz is docked to Pirs, the third crewmember is required to go to the Soyuz first, which cuts that crewmember off from the rest of the station. This is not desirable, so it is preferred not to keep a Soyuz docked to Pirs for extended periods.

That seems unlikely, since if a Soyuz isn't there, a Progress would usually be in it's place, and they mass roughly the same.

Having the Progress further from the CG may advantageous, since it is integrated into station attitude control. Actually, that brings up another question, is the Progress on Zarya used for attitude control at all ? Does plume impingement restrict it's use ?

One other factor in the re-location plan may be contingency planning for ATV. Given that it has never actually undocked before, setting things up so that the other flights can proceed even it if it has problems may be prudent.

Of course, if they had completed the joint airlock a little more to have the Orlan umbilicals we wouldn't have that issue.

Yes, I'd forgotten that detail.  You can't keep a crewmember in the station if you do an EVA from Pirs while the Soyuz is docked there.  This will become even worse once the ERA is on the station and being used during Russian EVAs.

Thanks for all the replies. I am most convinced by hop, concerning the ATV undocking. It makes a lot of sense to decouple the requirement to undock the ATV from the launch of the Progress, particularly when anik has marked the date of ATV undocking as (TBD).

I understand that from October 3, to October 12, next year, three Soyuz craft will be docked to the ISS at the same time.

I understand that from October 3, to October 12, next year, three Soyuz craft will be docked to the ISS at the same time.

Three Soyuz craft MUST be docked to the ISS at the same time because there will be a crew exchange as is doing now with the change of command.
And the launch in August of Progress M-SO2 brings a new docking port (MRM-2) to the Station.

November 1 - Progress M docking (to Zvezda)
November - Soyuz TMA-15 undocking (from Pirs) and landing [Russian cosmonaut, De Winne, Stott]
November 16 - Soyuz TMA launch [Suraev, Creamer, Noguchi]
November 18 - Soyuz TMA docking (to Pirs)

As I said above, I suppose TMA-15 will undock after November 18th.

Following with this spacecraft... any reason for the delay in the TMA-15 CDR assignment?   It seems easy to replace Lonchackov with his backup D.Kondratiyev

October 1 - Soyuz TMA-16 launch [R.Romanenko, J.Williams, Gruzdev (TBD)]

Maybe there’s a “bug” here.  J. Williams is scheduled for launch in STS-129, returning home with Soyuz TMA-16.
Maybe this place is for M. Korniyenko.
If this is right, this will be the first 100% Russian crew launched since… Soyuz TM30?

October 14 - Soyuz TMA-13 docking (to Zvezda)
October 23 - Soyuz TMA-12 undocking (from Zarya) and landing [Volkov, Kononenko, R.Garriott]
November 3 - Soyuz TMA-13 relocation (from Zvezda to Zarya) [Lonchakov, Fincke, Chamitoff]

September 5 (TBD) - Jules Verne undocking (from Zvezda)
September 10 - Progress M-65 launch
September 12 - Progress M-65 docking (to Zvezda)
October - Progress M-64 undocking (from Zarya)
October 12 - Soyuz TMA-13 launch [Lonchakov, Fincke, R.Garriott]
October 14 - Soyuz TMA-13 docking (to Zarya)
October 23 - Soyuz TMA-12 undocking (from Pirs) and landing [Volkov, Kononenko, R.Garriott]

This part of my plan is from RSC Energia's internal schedule, which was issued in the middle of May.

I was told Soyuz TMA-12 relocation in August/September is necessary for the freeing the docking port on Pirs module for Progress M-65. It is the best place for this cargo ship, because Progress M-65 should be used for the providing of the roll control of ISS. The cargo ship on the docking port of Zarya module has not such capability.

November 1 - Progress M docking (to Zvezda)
November - Soyuz TMA-15 undocking (from Pirs) and landing [Russian cosmonaut, De Winne, Stott]
November 16 - Soyuz TMA launch [Suraev, Creamer, Noguchi]
November 18 - Soyuz TMA docking (to Pirs)

As I said above, I suppose TMA-15 will undock after November 18th

Current plan has the indirect crew rotation in November 2009, i.e. old Soyuz TMA undocking will be before new Soyuz TMA docking.

October 1 - Soyuz TMA-16 launch [R.Romanenko, J.Williams, Gruzdev (TBD)]

Maybe there’s a “bug” here.  J. Williams is scheduled for launch in STS-129, returning home with Soyuz TMA-16

According to current plan Jeffrey Williams will be launched on Soyuz TMA-16.

According to the article by Chris from 6/23/08

STS-129 slips to October 15, 09. The mission will see Discovery carrying the EXPRESS Logistics Carriers ELC1 and ELC2, and will involve a crew rotation of Expedition 20's Robert Thirsk with his replacement, Jeff Williams.

This will become even worse once the ERA is on the station and being used during Russian EVAs.

AFAIK ERA will be launched with the MLM, that means Pirs is then deorbited.

So, given no one contacted me to correct, Jeff Williams is rotating via Soyuz and that is confirmed? Will add a subnote to the article in the interim.

I understand that from October 3, to October 12, next year, three Soyuz craft will be docked to the ISS at the same time.

Three Soyuz craft MUST be docked to the ISS at the same time because there will be a crew exchange as is doing now with the change of command.

Reading the following article:
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2008/05/13/223587/space-station-partners-agree-six-crew-transport-operation.html

I understood that for the future, only two Soyuz will be docked to ISS at the same time.

Obviously, exceptions will be agreed by the partners.

2009 marks the beginning of an increased operational tempo at the ISS with the addition of a new docking port, MRM-2, and the first use of the nadir Harmony CBM as a docking port. With five Soyuz TMAs, five Progress Ms and one Progress MSO at the station during the year the Russians will be very busy. Additionally there will be five Shuttles visits and the first HTV arriving.
There appears to be a several firsts in the coming year. I believe this is the first time a TMA will be relocated twice at the ISS with TMA-14 first moving from Zvezda to Zarya and then from Zarya to MRM-2. This will also mark the first time three Russian manned spacecraft have been at the station at the same time, with TMA-14, 15, and 16 all docked at once on October 3rd. Also on that date there will be five visiting spacecraft docked at the same time, the three Soyuz, one Progress, and the HTV.
I put together the spreadsheet below to try to get some idea of the traffic flow. Does anyone know how often the MRM-2 will be used as a docking port? Will it remain at Zvezda zenith?
