L2 SpaceX
« on: 09/27/2013 09:33 pm »
Hi. Been reading this site's news for a long  time. always very good! joined the forum for the launch of Cassiope and i'm curious if it's a good idea to sign up for L2?

I know it's a good idea to support the site you like, but to be honest i'm only really interested in spacex. is L2 SpaceX part of L2 interesting?

It should be a no-brainer! L2 has some fantastic SpaceX content. News is usually broken in that board 48 hours or so before everyone on the public side knows about it.

Hi fellow fan! Yeah, it's awesome. Much easiler to follow too as there's no chatty threads. Lots of great and fast info, but also 1000s of unreleased photos of Dragon in space, like these....but it full res.

I have to say I do like the other sections too and I only came here as a SpaceX fan. Some astondiong videos on there.

And yeah, people should support the site for giving us all these other areas, like the SpaceX sections. Thing is, you get a lot back for supporting cause of L2.

Oh, nice thread! :)

I'll probably pin it, so it doesn't come across as some sort of advert.....cause the "internet should free, servers grow trees" types hates these things, but the responses are great. That's the tester, as it's no good for me to say "yes, you should!" It's for other people to say if it's cool or not.

The phrase "support the site" is what makes it all worthwhile for me. That's exactly what L2 is and how L2 started....a tip jar with benefits. There simply would not be a NSF without L2 starting back in 2006.

The level of content a L2 member gains access to is simply a reward for the support. That's the model. A L2 member has directly supported the site's running costs (which is the servers), which justifies that member downloading a 2.5gb video you won't see anywhere else, while being part what is a very small membergroup, which also works well, because there's far less noise, and if you've got a question in L2 - which you can ask because it's the forum format - then you're likely to get a response from someone who just had their hands on the rocket you're asking about! :)

The "insider news"....which you see via it driving the news article content and when I post "per L2" in the open forum, is a by-product of allowing NASA and space industry people in L2 for free (free, because they work in the industry we're all fans of). A lot of those members - without it being a condition - volunteer content and information (nothing dodgy by proxy) as they see what L2 is about, know it's ring-fenced in front of a small audience - and want to help. That's a hugely organic side of the site.

L2 SpaceX section is relatively young by comparison to Shuttle, and you're not going to see FRR presentations for Falcon 9, etc. There's a much tighter line with the commercial side, but we work with these companies and they all know how this site works. You'd be surprised who I talk to from these commercial companies - which led to a hilarious situation once, where one middle manager wrongly assumed we were some sort of rouge secret-spilling site....only for his boss to pass on an e-mail from me, to which we invited him into L2 and he's now a big friend of the site. :)

Anyway, so as not to ramble on....

Do you like this site? Do you enjoy it? Then support it if you're able. All the support goes into the hosting. No one is taking a salary off this place. It allows the majority of the site to be free to all. For your support you are rewarded with access a massive collection of content you won't be able to find anywhere else.

If you do, the first line of the confirmation e-mail, which I personally send (no mail bots), is "Many thanks for subscribing to L2 for a X period, your support is greatly appreciated!" And you can be safe in the knowledge you will have become a proper part of this site, with the benefits that includes.

So we'll keep it on request until I can arrange a mechanism for both future and current L2 members who fall into that category! :)

If you are a SpaceX fan to whatever degree and have a day job that requires your full attention, I highly recommend to you to NOT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, get a L2 membership. ;)

There are days where I open the L2 section, not suspecting anything, then I read what awesome new details Chris or others have come forward with and -BAMM- my productivity for the day is gone. No way i can think about anything other then awesome rockets for the rest of the day...

And another warning: I cannot see how i do NOT prolong my L2 subscription once my 2nd term is up in a few months. It is just addictive. It literally gets my heart racing to read the stuff on L2. Be warned ;)

I hope this is not too cheesy, but that's the way it is for me...

You haven't seen anything until you see a thread with these guys speculating (with L2 info) on something SpaceX has given hints about(Elon's "bit" of leg!).
There is nothing else like it anywhere.
If you're a rocket fanboi, its a no brainer. Do it, you'll never regret it.

Yep. The content on L2 is awesome, but for me the true value is in the experts there. Seeing someone ask a question on some obscure (to me at least  :) ) part of the Space Shuttle Orbiter, followed by a reply that starts "I used to work on those things from time to time, and ..." is just priceless. Getting more information on SpaceX's future endeavours is also great, especially with the additional modelling and commentary from said experts. L2 costs less than a magazine subscription, and can you think of any magazine or website that has better space coverage than NSF? Doubly so with L2. It's a steal.

That's not why I got a subscription though. I got a subscription because running a high-traffic website like this one is expensive. On the Internet, you're either paying, or you're being tracked, profiled, and sold to the highest-bidding advertiser, or whoever else wants to know everything you do online. NSF doesn't do the latter, so I'm doing the former. Because it's simply the right thing to do.

L2's SpaceX coverage is superb. But then, L2's coverage of just about everything we love is superb.

Joining L2 is about giving back to this site that does so much to promote and increase space knowledge, not about secret special access to neat stuff. Do it to give back....

Then enjoy all the neat stuff you have special access to as a bonus. But what a bonus!

Lots of good points on this thread.

I think it's worth stressing that L2 contains information, including about SpaceX, that you cannot get anywhere else (unless you work in the organisations concerned). But it's not just information, it's also expert analysis by industry insiders. You get to see and understand the thinking behind the great articles published on the site.

This site really deserves to flourish, which it cannot do without our support. The next few years look to be incredibly exciting in space flight, so why not support the site and as a bonus get almost an insider's view of what's going on.

From a very happy L2 member.

According to my email from Chris, I joined L2 about 18 hours ago. Since then I have gotten about 3 hours of sleep, no work done, and the consumption of energy sources has occurred only at my desk. Luckily the restroom is only a few steps away. This is not a pretty sight. Take the below warning from ohlongjohnson seriously. This site is TOTALLY AWESOME. Anyone out there have the link to the 12 step program for recovery from L2 addiction?

And I am a big SpaceX fan. So far I have only started penetrating the wealth of information available on SpaceX, especially with all the recent developments. Chris does a great deal, but the entire community just lays a path of links, resources, and information to keep your mind spinning on a SpaceX high. I tell my kids to watch and learn from Elon and his people. This is the way everyone should think; like a rational, creative, everything may be possible engineer.

If you are a SpaceX fan to whatever degree and have a day job that requires your full attention, I highly recommend to you to NOT, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES, get a L2 membership. ;)

I was foolish enough to re-up about 3 times before I finally saw the light and just got the lifetime membership.  Had to try it out some first, but never regretted it.  The most return on investment I've probably every had on anything in my life.

I have been an L2 Member for over a year now, and am not an engineer or professional in this business, although I give many talks to the public and run an Astronomical Society in my locality.

I am very proud and grateful for the opportunities I have had to learn something of behind the scenes developments, especially in SpaceX

It has all been a very rewarding experience, and I highly recommend membership to any others interested in Space, as I have always regarded it as the key to a humane future for our children.
As one of  HG Wells' characters remarked
"The Future for Mankind is All the Universe- or Nothing"
This is a proposition amply confirmed by the contents of the world's news media...which are increasingly filled with unreasoning hatred and homicidal bigotry

Oh for a Total Perspective Vortex
SpaceX and other similar outfits are truly the vanguard of Humankind...

No sooner though, because otherwise, I'm fairly certain that my day of work will be gone before I even notice it, which would be pretty bad !
Even the non-L2 part manages to make me procrastinate quite a large ammount of time, so I don't even begin to immagine for L2 ...

Renewed my L2 for the third time, another 6 months added.

I'm mostly lurking on the forum - however, L2 keeps me sane in periods of SpaceX news drought.  Clicked around in other L2 sections also, beautiful stuff there to keep you entertained for a long, long time.

With human flight & Mars slowly coming on the radar, I'm thinking to go lifetime L2.

I was a space history fan before I was a SpaceX fan.  (I'm an older guy who remembers the glory days of the 1960s.)  I discovered this site a few days before my birthday and decided to treat myself to a year's subscription.

When the year was over I bought a life membership.  'Nuff said.

I'm an amateur cartoonist - first thing I ever drew was a Saturn 1B in crayola, but I had never more than a layman's interest in the knitty gritty soot-coated specifics of spaceflight until my mid teens. I browsed the site for a few years, got an account, and upgraded to a year's L2 last year.

Unlike a lot of people here, space never motivated me to be an engineer. I was obsessed by the idea that the godlike abilities of the human race are but a dusting of nitrogen from being amusingly pathetic, however much we pride ourselves as possessing dominion over the forces of the universe.

Our earliest mythologies concern humanity's interaction with time. What time does to us, what it does to the world, what the separation of time creates. We created societies based upon lineage and time, and for thousands upon thousands of years time was the only element of the universe worthy of study. People moved as fast as the horse could carry them, if they were wealthy. If they were not, they moved as far as their feet could take them. Most people didn't leave the ten mile circumference around their birth place, around their sources of food. Distance was interesting, but time, time regulated everything. The cycle of crops, trade, what ships would come into port and when, when it was safe to go to sea, when to wake and when to sleep. Michel Foucault, writing in 'Of Other Spaces (1967), Heterotopias', aptly observed that "The great obsession of the 19th century [and earlier] was, as we know, history". What had happened before an individual's life, more often than not, would determine the status of their life in the present. The "ever accumulating past" was critical to the human's perception of itself. Think of theology - most religions make a point that most prophecies have occurred, most prophets have existed, and all that remains is an (often predetermined) end of the world event. Man can no longer change the boundaries of reality. Aristocrats, slave owners and Emperors took their right to possess land (and people) from the fact their parents owned the same land and the parents of those presently bonded.

There is much to be said for having an old guard. Without generational ideologies, peace is impossible and we would live in total, undying anarchy as nobody agreed with anyone else on any subject ever. We could not exist as a species. There always have been mavericks, pushing technological mobility forwards, often resulting in social mobility as old, oppressive systems become impractical. Sometimes these futurist pursuits have negative results when they advance faster than the minds of the people controlling the technology - spears fly, gunpowder explodes, machine guns perforate, battleships sink, planes leave nobody to hide anywhere anymore, spy satellites know everything about you. Yet for every innovation that leads to violence results in hundreds to hundreds of thousands of positive applications. We have spectrometers, we have interplanetary probes, we have antibiotics, we have internal combustion engines. We can turn any surface on the planet into a cityscape if we just throw enough man hours into it.

With all these advances, time isn't quite so scary. We know how time relates to the universe, more or less. We know how to modulate our passage through time, how time is a horrifyingly complex tangle of micro-to-macrostructures moving at all manner of mindbending velocities. Our cities live in 24 hour electric sunrises. Time still concerns the average person, but it's the the great mystery anymore.

Before, we lived in a world with borders. Contrary to popular belief, people of Ptolemy's time and before knew that the world was round. Flat earther for the unenlightened was an insult even multi-millenia ago. For millennia people had been describing entities that could traverse through the celestial sphere in nearly every human culture, but the sky seemed a barrier reserved for beings with far longer lifespans than the average human. Individuals who could wield the power to destroy the world at whim, yet also had the power to be great creators, of the like mortality could not match. "The celestial place was in its turn opposed to the terrestrial place." Yet it didn't prevent people from exploring space and exploiting what they found there. When humans ran out of ocean and regolith in the 19th century, we'd already invented balloons and started going up. Drills got better, as did submarines, and we started going down. We were a three dimensional species, and started exploring three dimensional space.

We're now at a time when we are rapidly running out of three dimensional space. This is a ludicrous situation in a universe that (for practical purposes), is infinite in a possibly infinite spectra of multiverses. SpaceX gives a chance at meaningful exploration within my lifetime on a timescale somewhat more tangible than sometime in the somethingth recurring, and L2 lets me get my fill of free wish fulfillment. What's not to like?

Plus, I dig blue sunrises.

I can confirm - I was meant to start this obnoxious thing called a dissertation earlier this week, and then L2 came along and ruined it.

I'd like to bump this thread with my own little testimonial: I subscribed to L2 and have been loving it every day since. Buy the lifetime subscription. I go back to L2 every day. Most news breaks in L2 a couple days before it goes public. And the discussion there is just top notch! It is not uncommon that someone asks a question and within a couple hours someone with first-hand knowledge responds.

Thanks NSF for providing my daily space news fix!

And, out of appreciation, nothing stops a member from contributing more, or even a double lifetime membership fee. This provides exactly the same member benefits of a regular lifetime membership at exactly twice the cost. Servers cost money and for those that can, I recommend the double lifetime membership. (Note: This is not an official designation or membership level, and rumors that there is an “L3” are a fabrication of the party thread).

Another thing you can do is give scholarships... there are many deserving students majoring in aeronautics or other space related disciplines that would love to have a year of L2....

Thank you for suggesting this as I'm a teacher and I've spent just an hour in L2 and already blown away by it. I have lurked here for a long time and the threads in the SpaceX section can run at a fast pace meaning it's hard to keep up, but L2 appears to be a lot more concentrated and content heavy. An actual resource that I imagine would fire up interest in entering the sector for students. I would fully support such an idea as above.

While I can easily afford a lifetime membership I do a yearly membership so that each year I am sending money towards this site to help out. I find it well worth it!

I switched from yearly to lifelong when I started my PhD studies. Once my income once more increases I might return to reoccuring payments, either by "downgrade" to yearly or by pleading for several consecutive life sentences. ;)

For folks with lifetime memberships remember additional donations, gift memberships for students, etc can be sent.
And if you are super-duper pleased with everything, consider the ( non-existent except in our own minds) double,  or triple lifetime membership! All the same benefits as a single lifetime membership with bonus self-congratulations, smugness and satisfaction when visiting the site.

Sorry for necro post, but bery interested in getting L2 for 2 months before moving onto year long at end of this year. Never seen anyone with L2 complain or feel let down. I know there's exclusive video inside the Shuttles during launch, content never before seen. But I'm curious about SpaceX side, are there videos of booster operations at sea? Is there video of landings that never were released and no live feed was shown? (I.e, I'm hoping to see BulgariaSat-1 landing but seeing Chris was wanting to see it after the How not to land rocket videos, and also from what I've heard it did a skid on one leg and may not even be suitable for L2) Either way I'll definitely buy it in a week but I'm just curious about the SpaceX side, particularly landings.

SpaceX doesn't hand out videos of that stuff.  We don't have any exclusive footage of SpaceX operations at sea.

One side effect of SpaceX being as open with their material as they are is - there is basically no exclusive materials for NSF L2 or anyone else coming directly from SpaceX. What they can share, they share openly public and under Creative Commons.  Which is a good thing!

That being said, you do find video footage and photos taken by 3rd parties (especially NSF members) in L2 - showing SpaceX stuff, which you won't see anywhere else (or not until several days later, when a selection of the same material appears in the latest NSF news article).

Especially if you are interested in whats going down at Boca Chica, Mac Gregor or at the cape right very now, you should definitely become L2 member. The public update threads are great, but L2 goes one step closer!

There's also some information and confirmations in text form that can be read in L2 before they can be read elsewhere. But the rule is, what happens in L2 stays in L2, so if you read it there, you can't discuss it anywhere else (unless the information has since been made public by NSF article or SpaceX (Elon tweet))

I would definitely go for the 2 month tryout. Even if you don't like it, you'll support NSF that way, so there's no harm done.
