You are correct, I am indeed getting a different link, I didn't notice it, and it is taking me to the last page.

Yep. It's been this way for a long time and makes the mobile version quite a pain to use if you've not viewed unread for a while. For as long as I can stand it, I go to the last post with that button then scroll backwards to find where I think I left off. Really not ideal. The desktop site is far too small on my phone so that's not a solution.

It appears to be working now, with the right arrow taking you to a message in the middle of the thread that looks like it is “new”.

Much more useful. I hope I’m not imagining it.

It looks like the view full site option works.  I never even saw it down there in the corner.  Thanks for the help, guys!

Whenever i visit NSF main page on my phone (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/) and then press the menu to go to the forums, the NSF logo at the top takes 1-2 seconds to load and changes the other items' position in that list, causing misclicks.

can anything be done to fix this? Might be small but causes some annoyance.

attached a screenshot with the logo in question; using the latest version of chrome mobile on android.

I have noticed this problem as well.

I bet Mark could fix that if it's some running order of what loads first.

Just for the record, it doesn’t appear that I was imagining it. Just spent and enjoyable hour or so working my way around the forums in mobile mode on my iPhone and it works like a charm. Thanks.

I'm still getting this issue in the Unread Posts view (my default way to view NSF) - https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?action=unread

Example 1 I have never read the thread "Proton-M/Briz-M - EUTELSAT 5 West B & MEV-1 - October 9, 2019 (10:17 UTC)"

Tapping the title of that thread takes me to the first post, as expceted. URL:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=41418.0;topicseen

However, tapping the right-arrow takes me to the very last post, despite there being many unread ones. The URL is a hard link to that post:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=41418.msg2003353;topicseen#msg2003353

Example 2 I regularly read the thread "SpaceX Starship : Texas Prototype(s) Thread 3 : Discussion"

I know for a fact that multiple posts have been made since I last viewed it (the Replies counter has gone up more than one) yet the right-arrow still takes me to the last post. URL:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=49114.msg2003356;topicseen#msg2003356

All testing done in a Private desktop firefox window, with developer tools to spoof the deviceID

HOWEVER if I manually navigate to a category, eg "Space Policy Discussion"

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?board=44.0

and click the right-arrow on a thread I rarely read eg "
FAA Streamlined Launch and Reentry Licensing Requirements
"

Then I do get taken to the first unread post. URL:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=47923.msg1975128#new

note the slightly different format of the URL, with "#new" on the end instead of ";topicseen#msgnnnnnnn"

Therefore, the issue lies with the formatting of the Unread Posts template which must use different code to generate the URL for the right-arrow. It needs to use the same code as the normal category display.

A: I can confirm that the 'unread' posts has a different and apparently incorrect link.

B: There has been lots of work on the new desktop theme to make it quite good on mobile, you should try it out. (click the 'full site' button on the bottom right of the index page, and if you don't like it you can go back to mobile by finding the really tiny word 'mobile' at the very bottom of the full theme).

(With all the work they did on the new theme, I suspect they will not invest much time in the old mobile theme - even for tiny fixes like these)

Yeah, full site theme is better on mobile than it was, but the "new" button is tiny and that's the place I actually want to go. If that could be made big enough to tap reliably, that'd send me home happy.

Which takes us to what are ongoing tweaks to the overall desktop site (desktop and mobile), here:

This is a strange issue I came across on one thread. Anyone else ever had this issue and if so what was your solution?
Found another instance of this happening in the bottom half of https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=49936.msg2042538#msg2042538.

Occurs across multiple browsers and multiple devices.  Occurs regardless of whether I'm logged in, logged out, or incognito mode.

As I read the forum more and more on mobile devices, with mobile theme, no tap a talk, could we have a 'like' button of sorts on the mobile forum theme pls? The how is different matter of course. Button? Sliding like in email?

Honest question: is NSF interested in improving the workings (layout/interface) of this site? I see a lot of energy going into YouTube and Discord, which is excellent. Maybe that's the focus now.

Personally, I hope the effort goes into improving this site. Even moving all the movies from YouTube back to NSF would be an improvement IMHO. Why? Because here, we have moderators 'be excellent to each other' while YouTube and Reddit, and others often devolve into toxic comments and deception that I have no interest in. Just my 2pc.

EDIT: PS: An excellent example of added value of aggregation, e.g., Twitter, back on NSF is the thread Starship Epoch Ecosystem Tweet Index and History - UPDATES IMHO

Have you tried the full site view lately? It has been updated to work on mobile, not perfect and still plenty of room for improvement, but eminently usable.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have used the site in both desktop and mobile mode recently and in the past to compare. Sure, the full desktop site runs on a small screen but it is pretty 'busy' for me. Personally, I much prefer the uncluttered mobile version of the forum. In the same way, I prefer the Safari "reader" mode for any articles on the web. Uncluttered, very readable due to the specific font choices. UX design for a small screen is a special skill and we should aim for the best IMHO.
