Repaired data drives restoring the Moon
http://www.collectspace.com/news/news-111408a.html

They could've ended up in a museum or a scrapyard, but instead four fridge-size, 40-year-old magnetic tape drives are now restoring the Moon inside an abandoned McDonald's near NASA's Ames Research Center in northern California. The Lunar Orbiter Image Recovery Project (LOIRP) released their first result Thursday: an upgraded version of the iconic first Earthrise originally captured by Lunar Orbiter 1 on August 23, 1966.

Here's a link to the first restored Lunar Orbiter picture. It's the famous b&w image of the earth rising over the edge of the moon. The level of detail in the restored image is really amazing. Click on the small image to view the full resolution image (1740px × 3673px,7742.98 KB) .

I came across this article yesterday and aam glad to see it linked on this forum today. It mentioned 1500 tapes, some admittedly duplicates. But that is a lot of material, and all of it in so much better condition than the earlier 'official' images. These people are heroes so seeing this through to the end.

I am so pleased that this 'legacy' data is being preserved. I can't wait to see more. Bravo! Well done!

I've been told the 'big' version is over a gigabyte in size, thus its absence (at least for now) online.

This is great stuff, a truly great save, really would have been a tragedy had these historic views been lost to posterity.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth...

Really a terrific project! The pics I've seen before look terrific, but are they any before-and-after shots available anywhere?
