Currently on orbit at 185 miles altitude. Will be passing over Canada (apt, given the RMS checkouts).

"The Orion MPCV, otherwise known as the MPCV....." nope, otherwise known as Orion, you mean ;)

A lot of CxP footage getting recycled, mixed in with supermarket music.

Just watched the closeout crew's farewell on YouTube since I didn't get to see it live. Almost lost it.....leaving work now and think it's finally starting to set in, choking up as I write this now......I need a beer....

Once again, thank you all for your support of Human Space Flight and the Space Shuttles. Please, PLEASE...... Show your appreciation for these awesome machines by visiting them in their final homes.....

Padrat out....

You shouldn't have to put your hand in your pocket for a beer ever again. I know there a fair few thousand people on here who'd insist on that if turned up in our respective neck of the woods.

Whatever happens, you've all made your mark, something most people never will. Chin up and proud, finish strong and we'll have a good old bitch about the lack of leadership once she's safe on the ground :)

Statement from the President. Despite everything, it's a really nice statement.

For Immediate Release
July 08, 2011
Statement by the President on the Launch of the Space Shuttle Atlantis

Today, Americans across the country watched with pride as four of our fellow citizens blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in the Space Shuttle Atlantis, and America reached for the heavens once more.

Behind Atlantis and her crew of brave astronauts stand thousands of dedicated workers who have poured their hearts and souls into America’s Space Shuttle program over the past three decades. To them and all of NASA’s incredible workforce, I want to express my sincere gratitude. You helped our country lead the space age, and you continue to inspire us each day.

Today’s launch may mark the final flight of the Space Shuttle, but it propels us into the next era of our never-ending adventure to push the very frontiers of exploration and discovery in space. We’ll drive new advances in science and technology. We’ll enhance knowledge, education, innovation, and economic growth. And I have tasked the men and women of NASA with an ambitious new mission: to break new boundaries in space exploration, ultimately sending Americans to Mars. I know they are up to the challenge – and I plan to be around to see it.

Congratulations to Atlantis, her astronauts, and the people of America's space program on a picture-perfect launch, and good luck on the rest of your mission to the International Space Station, and for a safe return home. I know the American people share my pride at what we have accomplished as a nation, and my excitement about the next chapter of our preeminence in space.

I'm surprised he didn't make the trip down again to watch the launch! Maybe his previous visit was more political motivation after all... (no intention of starting a political debate here...just mentioned it for the sake of it)

Also - what the heck is that supposed to be in the first image?

Kinda off topic but has anyone ever got or taken pics of a TDRS in Orbit?

That is a great pic, and might hold me.  Maybe I can pull that flight video and be happy.     See you hear all the time about all the items in Orbit, I kinda wanted to see a lv come up with one in orbit.

extended ET video seemed to have worked, at least over europe.
captured 24 mins after launch
Reception used to receive this is a 90cm mesh dish with 3,5 turn RHCP  Helix for 2250 MHz, EME103B S-Band LNA and a G1MFG S-Band video  receiver.

Sweet!  Admirable accomplishment.  (Link omitted from Jester's post for brevity; see it there if you missed it!)
