This just seems like another DoD boondoggle in the works to me. More structure, more brass, more lobbyists, more budget, more acquisition overhead and delay. IMHO, at this stage, Space Force planning should be completely outside the military branches, perhaps DARPA or something like it would be better for the time being.

If nations really get serious about military space capabilities, I'm pretty sure they are going to be thinking well outside the current box and will require both original ideas and fast prototyping turnaround. The US military has shown itself to be remarkably incapable of anything like that.

I'm afraid we're in store for some combination of F35, LCS, SLS and Zumwalt programs starting in mid century, once they get the preliminary requirements approved.

 :o that quick, huh?

Trump today floated the idea of a new branch of the military: The Space Force. Numerous media outlets are reporting this. Here is one:

https://www.cnbc.com/2018/03/13/trump-floats-the-idea-of-creating-a-space-force-to-fight-wars-in-space.html

Google "Trump" with "space force" for multiple sources.

For so long we have tried to prevent the militarization of space. This is disconcerting.

Sigh. "Space Force" would be a bunch of people sitting at desks making sure the dozens (hundreds?) of Earth observation and communication satellites that are critical to modern warfighting are safe. The media are as ignorant about this as every other part of space policy. Next.
Human spaceflight is basically just LARPing now.

Yet another ridiculous idea, but a few of the usual congress critters seem bent on it, so who knows. Personally I think its just a distraction for today's events. Its really hard to take this seriously.

Sorry, what? Unifying all the stuff the military does in space out of the Air Force, Navy, Army and other parts of the military seems like a no-brainer. That's why people have been talking about it for decades now. Trump says it and all of a sudden it's a bad idea?

Human spaceflight is basically just LARPing now.

No, you completely misunderstand.

This is about reorganizing who does what within the US military.  It's just taking the existing things that the military already does that are related to space and putting them into a separate division.  That's all.

If this proposal is adopted, it won't cause the US to do any more or less in space.  It just means that there will be one organization within the military doing it, rather than having parts of different organizations doing it.

I think each one of those paints a picture that is completely wrong.

We're not talking about military people in space... we're talking about military people sitting at desks.

This would be as big a mistake as unification, just adds more budget battles.  This is not needed.

I quite like the idea of Vacuum Marines. They're the ones that use SWAT tactics to break into your home and do the housework, right?

A clearly delusional statement, as we will not be "going to Mars" anytime soon with NASA, doubly absurd because the POTUS has already stated his intention to redirect NASA to the moon, which would delay a Mars mission even longer.

There may have been a mixup of planetary bodies by our esteemed... so there's that. I quite like the sound of Vacuum Marines as well.

I agree with Chris and QuantumG that this is about the chairborne forces now, but one can always hope for some actual suited folk at some point.

After WWII, they created the Air Force from the Army Air Corp.  This would be consolidation of Navy, Air Force, etc, into all things space related in relation to military or defense.  They are working on hypersonic planes, they may need some type of in space security once people begin living and working in space, whether the moon or Mars or O'Neil cylinders, etc.  At some point we must begin thinking about it and not have overlapping problems.

Thanks, Lar.  I'm going to start using that clever phrase (in the proper context). 8)

EDIT: I just suggested via report-to-mod a thread merge with "Space Force": topic 42673.
