Soyuz MS-09 crewpatch:

The circular shape of the Soyuz MS-09 crew patch symbolizes the shape of the globe, inside of which the Belukha mountain is visible: the highest peak of the Altai, representing the crew's callsign. A trio of white swans flying over the Earth towards the International Space Station symbolise the three crew members. The six stars shown against the black background of space are for the members making up the successive ISS expedition crews. The golden silhouette of the orbital outpost is shown at the top of the emblem. Below are the numbers of the main expeditions of the same hue. The Roscosmos logo is placed in the middle of the inscription 'Soyuz MS-09'. The crew members' names are put along the emblem's inner border with the crew commander's name underneath the flying spaceship Soyuz. The outer border is made up of the astronauts' national flags.

Press Release

N°05-2018

Paris, 3 April 2018

Call for Media: News conference with ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst

Media are invited to the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany on 17 April for ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst’s last news conference in Europe before his second launch into space.

The final countdown for Alexander’s second stay in orbit has begun. The mission is called Horizons to evoke exploring our Universe, looking far beyond our planet and broadening our knowledge. His first mission was called Blue Dot.

Alexander will be launched on 6 June with US astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Prokopyev from the Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan in the Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft.

Alexander will take over command of the International Space Station for the second half of his mission. This is only the second time that a European astronaut will take up this leading position on the space outpost – the first was ESA astronaut Frank De Winne in 2009. Alexander Gerst is the 11th German citizen to fly into space.

The astronaut is now in the last stages of training for his challenging mission. The science programme is packed with European research: more than 50 experiments will deliver benefits to people back on Earth and prepare for future space exploration.

Journalists will have the opportunity to learn more about the Horizons mission, listen to brief contributions from science experts and ask Alexander questions.

Programme (times CEST)

The event will be presented in German and English.

10:30                   Welcome by Frank De Winne, Head of ESA’s European Astronaut Centre

“The European Astronaut Corps”, by ESA astronaut Tim Peake

“Horizons experiments”, by Volker Schmid, Head of DLR’s International Space Station team, and Matthias Sperl, DLR scientist

                              Lightning talks on Horizons science

11:15                    Conversation with Alexander Gerst on science, exploration and his role as Station Commander

11:30                   Q&A session

12:30                   Media opportunity for shared interviews

13:15                    End

NASA astronaut Serena Auñón-Chancellor will be available at 8 a.m. EDT Tuesday, May 15, for live satellite interviews one last time before she launches June 6 on her first spaceflight. The interviews will air live on NASA Television and the agency’s website.

Auñón-Chancellor currently is at the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Star City, Russia, with her crewmates for final prelaunch training until they depart May 19 for their launch site at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. Auñón-Chancellor and her crewmates, Alexander Gerst of ESA (European Space Agency) and Sergey Prokopyev of the Russian space agency, Roscosmos, will launch from Baikonur on the Russian Soyuz MS-09 spacecraft at 7:11 a.m. EDT (5:11 p.m. local time in Kazakhstan) June 6. They are scheduled to return to Earth in December.

Leading up to the interviews from the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, NASA TV will air highlights from Auñón-Chancellor’s training beginning at 7:30 a.m.

To interview Auñón-Chancellor, media must contact Sarah Volkman at 281-483-9071 or [email protected] no later than 3 p.m. Friday, May 11. Media participating in the interviews must tune to the NASA TV Media Channel. Satellite tuning information is available at:

https://go.nasa.gov/1pOWUhR

Auñón-Chancellor is one of nine members of the 20th NASA astronaut class, selected in July 2009. She originally came to NASA in 2006 as a flight surgeon and served as the deputy lead for medical operations for NASA’s Orion spacecraft before joining the astronaut corps.

Originally from Fort Collins, Colorado, Auñón-Chancellor earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., and a doctorate in medicine from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston’s McGovern Medical School.

Auñón-Chancellor will arrive at the International Space Station June 8, joining Expedition 56 Commander Drew Feustel and Flight Engineer Ricky Arnold of NASA, as well as Flight Engineer Oleg Artemyev of Roscosmos. The crew will continue several hundred experiments in biology, biotechnology, physical science and Earth science currently underway and scheduled to take place aboard humanity's only orbiting lab.

From Gerst's Facebook page

Riding a rocket to space actually uses up less fuel than a transatlantic passenger flight. Our Soyuz carries ~77t of Kerosene fuel, the rest is Oxygen. The trick is to burn it quickly: these engines spit out 20 Gigawatts - equivalent to 10 large nuclear power stations - for 2 mins.
