OneWeb Stellar Blu Solutions successfully deliver LEO inflight connectivity on Boeing 777 test flight.

Terminal achieved outstanding performance with speeds of 260Mbps download / 80 upload*. Simultaneously demonstrated the ability to connect Teams calls, 4K YouTube streaming, Netflix, online VR gaming and Nintendo Switch gaming Terminal named ‘Sidewinder’ is significantly lower profile, lighter and smaller than existing aviation antennas to improve fuel efficiency. Certification expected in mid-2023.

14 Jun 2022

AIX, Hamburg, Germany, 14 June 2022 - OneWeb, the global space-based communications company, together with commercial aviation terminal partner Stellar Blu Solutions** achieved a significant milestone on May 28, when it successfully delivered high-speed, low-latency inflight LEO satellite connectivity to a commercial airliner.  Stellar Blu, has partnered with antenna technology provider Ball Aerospace to incorporate its electronically steered arrays (ESA) into the terminal solution.

This collaboration realised breakthrough performance on OneWeb’s low earth orbit (LEO) network.  The new Stellar Blu platform, known as “Sidewinder”, will continue flight testing through the remainder of 2022, with a target for certification and availability in mid-2023.

This first test flight was conducted aboard a Boeing B777-200LR and took off from Fort Worth Alliance Airport (KAFW), in Texas on May 27th at 15:20 UTC and flew for just over one hour delivering the game-changing connectivity experience.

This test flight validates not only the installation and integration of the aircraft terminal, but underscores the performance of the antenna technology, and verifies the reliability of the connectivity during taxi, take-off, landing and typical aircraft flight manoeuvres. As with any test flight, the assessment of performance reviewed expected parameters against vendor specifications, while also instrumenting and verifying on-aircraft impact and operating characteristics.

The Test Flight Crew simultaneously demonstrated the ability to connect Teams calls, 4K YouTube streaming, Netflix, online VR gaming and Nintendo Switch gaming, among other structured performance tests. Maximum speeds of 260Mbps download/80 upload and file transfer scenarios of 5GB demonstrated in approximately 20 seconds. All while operating at well under 100ms of network latency.

Commenting on the successful test flight, Ben Griffin, Vice President Mobility, said: “This test flight represents a fantastic milestone for OneWeb. Broadband in-flight connectivity, delivered to a commercial aircraft via low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and an electrically steered antenna (ESA) is now – finally – a reality. Together with our partners Stellar Blu and technology from Ball Aerospace, we are now well and truly on our way to delivering consistently reliable, game-changing, affordable inflight connectivity to commercial aviation users everywhere.

“This successful flight test demonstrates the power, not only of the OneWeb network, but our industry focused and partnership-led approach to the design, development, and deployment of ground-breaking technologies to connect commercial aviation. A solution designed for the aviation industry, by the aviation industry”

This maiden flight represented the culmination of several months' collaboration between Stellar Blu, OneWeb and Ball Aerospace including ground trials and flight tests.  Their goal is to achieve certification in mid- 2023.

The Sidewinder terminal is ARINC 791 compliant to ease integration on commercial aircraft, with a smaller form factor option for installation on regional jets and single-aisle airliners.

Tracy Trent, Stellar Blu CEO, highlighting the achievement commented: “This initial testing is more about the integration of the components and accomplishing a safe installation on the aircraft, versus proving the connectivity functionality. That said, we are delighted by the performance of the terminal during the test flight. OneWeb is changing the reality of inflight connectivity now and for the future. Our antenna will harness the power of OneWeb’s low Earth orbit constellation to deliver high-speed, low latency, globally consistent and reliable connectivity for every passenger, without conflict or compromise. We are very confident the Sidewinder terminal will present operators with a purpose-built aviation solution, delivering new breakthroughs for passenger experience, and redefining aircraft operating expectations for reliability and maintainability.”

Based on the electronically steered antenna technology developed by Ball Aerospace, the terminal is significantly, lower profile, lighter and smaller than existing aviation antennas.  It will enable airlines to connect their aircraft, passengers, and crew over OneWeb’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication network.  OneWeb expects this to be a key differentiator as airlines initially embrace and become confident in the benefits and performance of its new LEO technologies.

OneWeb is exhibiting at Aircraft Interiors Expo at Messe Hamburg, Germany Stand 2E40. Meet Ben Griffin and the aviation team on site, or pre-book a meeting by emailing [email protected]

Starlink and OneWeb reach spectrum coordination plan.

by Jason Rainbow — June 14, 2022

TAMPA, Fla. — SpaceX and OneWeb said June 13 they have reached a spectrum coordination plan that would enable their current and second-generation broadband megaconstellations to coexist.

In a letter to the Federal Communications Commission, the companies asked the regulator to disregard any spectrum coordination issues they had previously filed against each other.

“Given this positive development, the Parties encourage the Commission to quickly approve each second-round system so that they may begin deploying these cutting-edge systems and offering even more advanced services as soon as possible, they said.

SpaceX has permission to deploy 4,408 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) for its Starlink network, and is seeking approval to add nearly 30,000 more to improve its broadband services.

OneWeb has permission for 648 satellites in LEO and wants to grow its constellation to roughly 7,000 satellites.

There are currently 2,404 Starlink and 427 OneWeb satellites in orbit, according to statistics maintained by spaceflight analyst and astronomer Jonathan McDowell.

Starship, the heavy-lift launch vehicle SpaceX is developing in Texas, is critical to the company’s plan to upgrade its Starlink constellation.

Gen 2 Starlink satellites will be nearly seven meters long and five times bigger than its first generation, according to SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk.

On June 13, the Federal Aviation Administration concluded a long-awaited review that enables Starship orbital launches from Texas — if the company completes dozens of mitigations to reduce impacts on the environment and the public.

SpaceX has been using Falcon 9 rockets to launch batches of typically 53 Starlink satellites at a time. The next Starlink launch has been slated for June 17 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

Arianespace had been using Russian Soyuz rockets to launch 32-36 satellites per OneWeb mission, however, it had to pause deployments in March following sanctions resulting from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

OneWeb has signed contracts with SpaceX and the commercial arm of Indian space agency ISRO to resume launches this year.

Amazon and Canadian satellite operator Telesat, which are planning to deploy their own LEO broadband constellations, declined to comment on Starlink and OneWeb’s coordination plan.

Regulatory battles

In a separate June 13 regulatory filing, SpaceX said it had raised nearly $1.68 billion through a private offering of shares as it continues to invest heavily in Starlink and Starship.

Starlink is already the world’s largest megaconstellation, and its expansion plans have met fierce resistance from U.S.-based geostationary satellite broadband operator Viasat.

Viasat has called on the FCC to perform an environmental review of Starlink before allowing the company to expand its network, and in May pointed to light pollution issues it says remain unresolved.

Meanwhile, SpaceX is seeking to block Viasat’s $7.3 billion plan to buy British satellite operator Inmarsat to expand its business internationally and across multiple orbits.

In a letter filed with the FCC June 10, SpaceX said Viasat is unfit to take control of Inmarsat’s spectrum licenses because Viasat is allegedly violating its current frequency rights.

SpaceX accused Viasat of using Ka-band frequencies designated for operators in non-geostationary orbit on a primary basis without first meeting FCC conditions.

“The public interest is not served by giving a company with such blatant disregard for the Commission’s rules control over the Inmarsat satellite system,” SpaceX said in the June 10 letter.

Viasat denies it has violated FCC rules.

“Viasat has previously refuted SpaceX’s baseless claims at length,” Viasat spokesperson Jessica Packard said in a statement.

“There is nothing new here. We continue to believe that the transaction will serve the public interest and remain confident that the FCC will reach that same conclusion after reviewing the complete record.”

Packard said Viasat remains on course to complete the Inmarsat acquisition before the end of 2022, subject to regulatory clearances and the approval of Viasat shareholders who are due to vote on the deal June 21.

The OneWeb situation is looking like a boon for new commercial launch entrants.  The first flight for any customer is the hardest one to get, but OneWeb is in a quandry.  They would prefer not to use SpaceX (a competitor), ULA and Ariane have no available rockets, Russia is off the table for political reasons, as is (I presume) China for ITAR reasons. Hence they are willing to give a chance to anyone with a promising technology and room on the manifest.

India is helping out too, but I guess they can't ramp fast enough in time to grab a larger portion of the OneWeb pie.

They are kind of busy carrying out government mandated reorganisation and privatisation of their domestic space industry. GSLV-3 is in demonstrator flights and initial production. AFAIU: At least two domestic payloads were bumped to later serial production and flight assignments to allow these two OneWeb flights to have rides in the agreed timeframe.

First 5G end-to-end link recorded at ESA 5G hub using OneWeb constellation.

Technology partners achieve first-of-its-kind 5G full end-to-end link through a low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite constellation.

Harwell, UK, June 28, 2022 – OneWeb, together with the European Space Agency (ESA), SatixFy, and CGI, achieved a significant milestone after successfully demonstrating a high-speed, low-latency full 5G end-to-end link with OneWeb’s LEO satellite constellation and the 5G/6G Hub at ESA / ECSAT’s Harwell centre.

Under the Sunrise Partnership Project, with support from the UK Space Agency, ESA and OneWeb have partnered with antenna technology provider SatixFy UK and 5G services provider CGI to develop its electronically steered arrays into the 5G user terminal, offering an extremely compact solution for mobility services.

The Sunrise Partnership Project collaboration achieved a breakthrough performance on OneWeb’s LEO network.  This new super compact user terminal will undergo further testing to explore its full capabilities with LEO and GEO links for mobility services. After these tests are completed, the user terminal will be “fine-tuned’ and optimised for different mobility use cases, targeting a low cost and effective system to provide OneWeb commercial services for land, maritime, and aviation markets.

The demonstration on June 28 involved a super compact satellite terminal mounted on a car, embarking a 5G Radio Access Network and connecting to 5G user devices. The terminal pioneered a state-of-the-art DVB-S2X modem based on SatixFy ASIC with high throughput. It was the world’s first 5G backhaul communications with an electronic steerable antenna connected to LEO satellites.

The user terminal antenna was also used to link simultaneously to a GEO satellite at an altitude of 36000 km, and OneWeb LEO satellites orbiting at 1,200 km (a thirtieth of the distance), with multiple simultaneous beams and electronic tracking. Live video and audio streaming took place from a GEO satellite, with 4K UHDTV videos being played.

This 5G end-to-end link validates not only the communication over OneWeb’s satellites: it also successfully demonstrates the full integration of space and ground networks using 5G links, with low latency and very high speed and quality performance.

Elodie Viau, ESA Telecom Director, said: “This test is the first of its kind, and is a real team collaboration by ESA, OneWeb, CGI and SatixFy. It connected the ESA 5G/6G Hub at ESA/ ECSAT Harwell site through OneWeb satellites, using the super flat and advanced antenna made by SatixFy UK for mobility services. Through the Sunrise Partnership Project we aim to show that 5G high quality and speed connectivity is now a reality, to the benefit of everybody, every day, and everywhere.”

Massimiliano Ladovaz, OneWeb CTO, said: “At OneWeb, our approach to delivering connectivity is through collaboration with world-class industry partners who share our vision of a truly connected world. We’re therefore delighted to partner with Satixfy and CGI on this UK and European Space Agency funded research program. We are working together to connect those hardest to reach with new Space-based LEO connectivity. The ground-breaking Satixfy electronically steered array antenna technology will, once in commercial production, enable mobility customers such as airlines, train operators, and coach companies to leverage the power not only of the OneWeb LEO network, but also terrestrial 5G and legacy GEO satellite networks. A hybrid, multi-beam, multi constellation solution that ensures that passengers remain connected no matter where they are – be it mid-air, mid-ocean or in the most remote corners of the world.”

Dr Paul Bate, Chief Executive of the UK Space Agency, said: “This is a world first which demonstrates the vital role that space can play in improving connectivity and the value that companies like OneWeb and Satixfy bring to the UK. The results of this trial will help transform how satellite and terrestrial networks interact, accelerating the development of technologies such as connected vehicles and autonomous cars. It is a great example of why we're supporting ESA's state-of-the-art 5G/6G hub in Harwell, which will create new commercial opportunities and catalyse investment into the UK's thriving space sector.”

Simona Gat, Satixfy UK CEO, said: “I’m proud of this important milestone achieved by the whole SatixFy team, who cooperated together with our partners from OneWeb and CGI, with great support from the UK Space Agency and ESA.”

Jaime Reed, CGI VP Space Data Platforms and Applications, said: “CGI is pleased to build on our long relationship with OneWeb and ESA to demonstrate how seamless 5G mobile services can be delivered over satellite constellations. This is an important step to enable everyone to have easy-to-use connectivity everywhere and allow businesses to take advantage of deployed private 5G networks to improve productivity.”
