Bug 0001:

In PM's to mods, no screenshots can be attached (no attachments in PMs) as such the only way to report things that require a screenshot for demonstation require to post in a regular forum thread. I didn't find an existing thread with suggestions for improvement or bug reports, therefore I think this is the appropriate section to do so.

Bug 0002:

Poll options get lost when a poll is being edited:

When a poll is created on a thread, (Button [Add Poll]) there are a number of useful options exist, such as the selection flag:
"Allow users to change vote" [ ]

This is especially useful when one wants to add new options to a poll at a later time.

However when actually doing so by clicking [Edit Poll] on the same thread, the interface does not display this option.

If the edited poll is then saved via the [Save] button, the users ability to change their vote - if previously set - gets lost, and the [Remove Vote] is no longer present.

There is a work around, but it requires browser extensions.

If the HTML of the page is edited to manually add the checkbox with the correct parameters (from the Add Poll dialog) to the Edit Poll dialog, the ability of users to change their vote can again be selected, and if this is then saved, the preference is stored correctly by the backend and the poll again works.

As such, permanently fixing this bug only requires a frontend change (adding the missing flag to the HTML form)

A similar problem also exists with the poll duration and the maximum number of votes per user, which can not be changed when editing the poll (but at least this setting does not get lost).

I have a bug I just stumbled on....

Firefox just updated and now the "preview" button when replying to a post does not work.  It turns into a hand to click....but does absolutely nothing....

This post is no different...just tried preview...nothing at all.

Going to go to Chrome and check there.

EDIT with Chrome:

Chrome's test:  Preview is not working for Chrome either.  Clicking the button does nothing.

FOUND THE PROBLEM.  It is a change in how the page is drawn.  Usually when I click Preview, it pops the page up to the top and shows the preview.  For some reason when I click the preview button now, the page updates at the top with the preview but the editor part never moves off view so it looks like it is doing absolutely nothing when pressing the preview button...you don't even getting a spinny part at the top like it is doing something.

Is this a recent change?  When you click preview...it would be nice if it actually moved the page to the preview section like it has always done since I first got here :-)

Yes it is fairly recent, I noticed it as well. Super confusing the first couple times until you realize what is happening.

As another recent thing, I have noticed that after posting in a thread, sometimes that section switches to "unread" on the main forum page, even though the post I just wrote is the most recent one, and I have certainly already read my own post. Not a big deal, easy enough to click in and switch it back to read status.

No...  Chromium is Edge(new version), Chrome, and Opera.  Firefox is 100% NOT based on Chromium.

This may just be a "forum software updated a while back, this can never be fixed" issue, but doing some digging on Canfield joints I'm coming across a lot of decade-old links using an older addressing style (e.g. http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=1201&start=1 ) that 404. The annoying thing is even if you translate to the current URL formatting (e.g. https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=1201 ) the thread still cannot be accessed. With the forum search being inoperable, this is doubly irritating for links to L2 threads that are not google-indexed. It's possible some of this is due to thread-shifting post-Constellation where forum/subforum layouts were rejiggered.

Do you have an example of a thread that can't be accessed when you put it in the new format?

The examples linked do not work (for me) in either format, link originally from the OP here.

Trivial thing:
In your user profile summary, it lists Posts, Likes, Liked and shows a little graph or progress-bar of (I assume) likes/posts ratio. Except it doesn't. (On mine, Posts=2224, Likes=1193, Liked=994. But the graph hover text says "2% Likes/Posts (1193 Likes)" and the graph does seems to show 2%.

Is the graph meant to show something else than the likes/posts ratio? In which case, better labelling would help. If not, maths be wonky.

Doesn't hurt anything. (How often would you look at this summary?) But it might be an easy fix if it's just an equation with flipped terms.

Re: Preview change.
I like that it doesn't have to reload the whole tab. V.v.good. But as other said, it would be nice if it could move to the top of the previewed text. It's always weird when you click something and nothing appears to happen.

The favicon has been updated to the new logo for a while now, but if you open an attached image in a new tab it will have the old favicon with the white background.

Moderator reminder:
Do not embed images in your post text. Among other things, it can slow down or mess up page loading or formatting.

Attach files--this function is available in the mobile version of NSF as well. Scroll down past the text box. "I'm on my smart phone" is not an excuse.

Otherwise, you may lose your post.
Bolding mine.

If it's really that serious then it'd be better for image embeding to be disabled, if at all possible.

The search function often doesn't work. I have to re-click several times the search button before it displays the results of the search.

Came here to post this. It is nitpicky, but probably also an easy fix.

I don't think I've ever seen a forum or a bulletin board type of affair with a usable search function.  Certainly, this forum software doesn't offer usable functionality.  It either glitches as you describe, or finds nothing to a wide variety of search arguments, from basic to boolean-complex.

As someone noted in another thread, I think it comes down to how people use a forum like this.  The people who developed the software seem to look at it as a way of sharing a stream of information.  Once it's been shared, and a majority of interested people have seen it because it's new, the software doesn't deem it important to be able to find it again.  The backlog of posts is useless dross as far as that use paradigm is concerned... ;)

Someone posted a way to search this forum using Google. If they could post that search parameter here, that would solve your search needs. Such a search parameter could be uses or adapted to other search engines.

Paste this into the Google search box:

[put your search terms here] site:forum.nasaspaceflight.com

Note, this will only work for the public threads, L2 stuff is not accessible by Google.

I just noticed that when I look at my profile, it shows "Likes Given: 0". Zero!

I know that is wrong since I give our more likes than I get (philosophy of mine).

Temporary bug?

Intermittent bug it seems?  Just refreshing the page can change whether it's showing or not.  Will let our webmaster know.

FYI There were a couple of forum hiccups around that time. Loaded pages on my iPhone as usual but the mobile theme was dropped a few times. Then, just reload and ok again. Now all seems calmed down.

I've recently encountered an annoyance when reading the forums on my iPhone over a coffee.
I suspect this is a new bug in the Safari web browser and nothing to do with the forum, but I would like to know if anyone else has seen the same issue.

What happens is (and I'm on the 'Full Site') I'm happily reading a long series of posts and suddenly the phone decides to 'double space' the whole (rather long) page vertically, making the whole page much taller and losing my place.  It then takes me half a minute or so to scroll down to wherever I had previously got to.

If I'm on Firefox/Windows or Firefox/Linux this never happens.

This problem started maybe six weeks ago. OS version is currently 14.0.1, but I'm sure it also happened with 13.*.

No idea if bug or feature, but the last few days when I click into the forum from the front page I get a full screen ad I have to manually close. Occurs on mobile, don’t recall seeing anything similar on desktop.

I know this is likely just lack of maintenance and not a bug, but just FYI the calendar function still shows NROL-44 having launched on its Delta IV Heavy October 16th.  Unscheduled launches, such as Dragon Crew 1, don't show up at all, so I would think that NROL-44 ought to have the same attribute?  In other words, it's not still showing on 10/16/20 just to have somewhere for it to go while waiting for the launch to be actually rescheduled.

Like I say, I imagine that's just a quick maintenance thing, I just didn't see anywhere else to report it.  :)

Apparently Google made some recent changes to their advertising.  Mark changed some ad settings on the site this morning to hopefully make things less intrusive.  He said it may take a little time for the changes to go into effect.

I'm seeing this too, it happens on my iPhone 8 but not my (much older) iPad. It seems to be related to the loading of tweets, perhaps a style sheet conflict?

When I click on the "new" link next to a forum topic that has new posts in it, the "new" tag from the thread below the one I actually clicked through will go away, along with the tag from the topic I clicked into.

This only happens if i click the NEW tag (which takes you to the first unread post), it does NOT happen if I enter the thread through the normal thread title link, nor if I click in through the last post link.

I am on chrome, fully updated and public version.

This has been happening for at least a week. Cant remember exactly when it started, but it hasn't been that long. I recall being confused and questioning my sanity for a day or two before I realized it was a bug.

What operating system, and what page are you clicking from?

Windows 10 Home

Any forum page.  If I click the yellow NEW button, it will clear that thread, and the one below it.  Very weird.  But if your not having floods of reports on this, it may be something on my end. But I cant for the life of me figure out what it would be.  I even disabled all my add-ons, and it still does it.

Some extra testing --  If you click the new button, it will only clear one page worth of posts, so if you are 3 pages in you have to click new, then go back 3 times for the button to go away.  This is (I think anyway) intended behavior. Any post you could see on that page gets cleared as read, and then when you go back the next unseen post on the next page will be the new target of the new button.  ---  Anyway, I noticed that the bug I am experiencing will do the same thing - it will only clear one page at a time from the bugged topic below. So its kinda like I am opening both threads at the same time.

Hope that makes some sense?

Edit: did some searching on simple machines website. Found someone with the same problem from 5 years ago.  No solution mentioned though.  Makes it VERY likely to be on my end somehow.

When I compare the behaviour of viewing the forum threads from a few months ago
[before the changes for how twitter entries are displayed], I remember wondering
why the tweets entered in a post didn't actually show the tweet, just the text from it.

It was no big deal to click on the link and open the tweet in another tab or window.
Particularly since most tweets had been viewed on my twitter feed 12-24 hours earlier,
so I rarely needed to click on the twitter hyperlink.
I typically run with a few Firefox windows and one of them has 1-2 dozen NSF threads as tabs.
and there's a tab which I use to view unread threads. It used to be that when I clicked on a tab that had
new post(s) that the window showed the last post I'd read and when I refreshed the tab I'd see
the new posts.

Then the recent changes went into effect.
I find the vm usage of firefox has gone up significantly and the thread takes a lot
longer to display after a refresh - I think thats's all due to all the extra images from the twitter tweets in a thread. Then the tab starts jumping around as the tweets are displayed in full.
But where the tab settles down to is not always as deterministic as it used to be.
There are some threads that seem to like jumping me back a week or a month.
It's possible that these might be due to moderator action but I don't think so.

So these days I find myself waiting for a tab to display a lot more, waiting for
the display to settle down and then scrolling to the posts that I haven't read.

All in all, I would vote for going back to the previous scenario where the tweets
aren't expanded with images. I much preferred that behaviour.

Sorry, Carl, but the tweet images have always expanded for me, with the text repeated in a quote box below the tweet.  As with most of these HTML issues, it's an interaction between the forum software and your particular system.  If you went to a different computer, you would have seen different behaviors.

So I had nearly given up on my issue of the new tags getting cleared where they shouldn't, especially after seeing the five year old post on simple machines forums that was left unresolved.

BUT Then I got bored at work today, and did some browsing on the site.  I noticed that the bug was still effecting me on my work computer, which means it almost cant (?) be a problem on my side.  I've attached a couple screenshots of what is happening.

I've been having this exact issue as well.  Not sure when it started, but probably in the last few days.

Thought of one difference in my setup that might make the bug more apparent to some people over others.  I have my settings tweaked to show 50 comments per page instead of the default of 20.  This makes it much more likely (in my favored topics anyway) that I will have only one page of unread posts, which will guarantee that the new tag will disappear after only one click of the tag.  If you are set to only 20 comments per page, it will be more likely that your unread posts will span more than one page, which means that the new tag will not disappear altogether, but it will still affect you since clicking the new tag on the bugged topic will skip showing you the unread posts on the previous page.

I explained the mechanics of this a couple posts up, basically clicking the new tag (in a perfect world with no bugs) will only clear the "unread" status of posts on the page that it takes you to.  If you click the back button, you will still see the new tag, but it will now take you to the next page of unread posts.  Right now, (in the bugged world) the same thing is happening for the topic underneath the one you clicked.

I am a C# programmer by trade, but I know enough about javascript to give myself headaches trying to read it.  If I had to guess though, there is a bug in one of the places that iCurMessageId is being reset.

Thats about all the digging I can do before my pity for javascript devs overwhelms my ability to debug. :-) I salute you, javascript devs.

I have mine set to the maximum number of posts per page, which is 100 IIRC.  And yeah, sometimes the New tag does the same thing to me.  Which would normally not be what you'd expect.

Interestingly, I was not having the issue very often, but after I read this post yesterday I am now seeing that, when I go into a topic that has multiple threads marked with the New tag, once I click on New to read the new posts on one thread, when I come back to the topic, all of the New flags have been cleared.  Going out and back in to the topic doesn't restore them.

On the plus side, up until today when I exited any of the topics lower down in the forum (and this is all using Chrome on my Windows 10 HP PC), the whole topics list, i.e. the forum index, would come up with the last-visited topic at the top, and then automatically back up two or three sets of topics.  It's no longer doing that.  I guess you win some, you lose some... ;)

Update on the New tag glitch, as it seems to be happening more of the time, now.  This is all on Chrome running on Windows 10.

The simplest way I can put it is that now, when you enter a thread by clicking on its New tag, when you come back into the thread list you will most commonly see the threads that had New tags that are lower down on the list (i.e., older) will have lost their New tags.  But the newer threads with New tags above the thread you just read will still have their tags.  There are variations, however.

For example, let's say the topic SpaceX Missions has five threads which have New tags.  If I open them from oldest to newest (my normal MO), I don't notice the glitch, the New tags on the newer posts are not normally affected.

But if I open the newest thread (let's say it's about a flight launching in the next few minutes, and I want that update first), when I return to the list of threads, *all* of the New tags have been cleared.  If I open the second thread down, when I come back to the list only the New tag on the newest thread remains, the flags on the older threads have been cleared.

But... the variations.  Sometimes, in the above case, if I open the second thread in the list, when I come back to the list the second and third threads will have lost their tags, but the first, fourth and fifth threads still have their New tags.  In other words, on occasion it *only* clears the tag from the next-oldest thread, while in other cases it clears the tags from all of the older threads.

And the least common variation is that opening *any* thread by clicking its New tag will, when you come back to the thread list, have removed all New tags.

I don't believe the New tags are consistently restored after a new post to a thread in the topic, either.  You can't restore them by going back to the Topic index (i.e., the main forum index), but they do sometimes restore after someone makes a new post to a thread in the affected topic.

I hope this glitch pattern capture helps in tracking down the source of the bug.  Sorry to have the bad news that the bug is inconsistent... :)

Also have PerferToLurk's issue with the NEW button disappearing when the one above it is clicked. It only started a few days ago that I noticed.

Also on Chrome with Windows 10.

Just to provide a counter example: Under both Chrome and Vivaldi (Chromium-engine), current versions, on the same ancient Win7 box, the "new" tag seems to work the way it's intended.

Clicking through it gives me the most recent read page. If I go back to the topic list, the "new" tag will now target the next most recently read page (if available, otherwise will be cleared). And none of the threads below have their newness altered.

Tried changing the number of topics per page, and number of messages per page, couldn't reproduce the described behaviour.

I added a comment to a bug report on the "new tag" bug over at simplemachines tech support forum.  There were a few very interesting replies including one potential temporary fix. Additionally, a longer explanation of the root cause along with a link to a Chromium bug report (which the chromium team appears to actually be taking seriously).

Hi,
Woke up this morning to find NSF had disappeared from my Tapatalk menu.
As it’s the only way I view forums it was pretty disconcerting.
Is the a bug, or has something weird happened.
Really missing my SN9 information

I have a theory on some of the "new" tags throwing people backwards in the thread, maybe it helps jive with the reports I've seen.

I've noticed that modifying an existing or old post resets the timestamp (or whatever per-user-thread read indicator exists) to back where that post occurred in the thread. This seems reasonable. I usually just look at the bottom of the post and it's got that new modified notification and time on it--makes sense.

Every once in a while, I get to a post where it's not obviously modified. Or, it's not the right post at all. This seems to happen in the busier and more contentious threads.

What I suspect happens is that an existing post is first modified and then moved or deleted (likely mod action).  My guess is that the pre-move/delete modification resets the user-thread new indicator backwards, but the "new" tag no longer corresponds to an existing post in the thread.

As an example, I just ran across this "new" tag now, where:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=52701.msg2184784#new

...goes to that referenced URL, but shows me a different initial message:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=52701.msg2184797#msg2184797

...which appears to be the first message past the one referenced (which no longer exists). I've been refreshing that page as I'm catching up, and I know I recently caught up on that thread. Reading further down, no new messages had yet appeared, and the message number the "new" URL references doesn't exist in the thread.

Probably only a mod could verify this. One mitigation might be to modify the post after moving it, or don't modify it before deleting it.

As to a quick way to troubleshoot: when you get that thread deja-vu, check if the message is marked as modified. If not modified, check your URL versus the first message you're taken to. They won't match if it has been moved or deleted.

It's a rare issue for me, but I'm proffering this as rational explanation from occurrence patterns. Or you know, the forum got fed after midnight.

New odd bug:

I opened the SpaceX Missions topic and, as I normally do, clicked on the NEW icons next to threads which have new posts since the last time I looked at them.  The last thread I clicked on in this manner was the Crew 1 discussion thread, which did have two new posts about the alarms that were spuriously sounded from Resilience overnight last night.

However, when I clicked the NEW icon, instead of being brought to the new post from today (the first new post in that thread since December of 2020), I was brought to Reply #548, posted on 11/15/20 I believe.  Literally hundreds of posts prior to the new post.  And before y'all ask, yes, I had already displayed and read the hundreds of posts between the post displayed and the actual newest, unread posts.  Put it this way, I have my forum settings set to show 100 posts per page.  The NEW icon opened me up to page 11, while the latest posts are on page 15.  That is be definition hundreds of posts... ;)

This happened at about 5:40am CDT.  I'm awful at remembering what the offset is in both standard and daylight savings times, but I think that's about 10:40 UTC.

That's the first misdirect I've seen using the NEW icons in, like, forever.  Figured it caught my attention, so I'd report it.  :)

I can confirm the same odd behavior on the same Crew-1 thread at 1:50am EDT, and whatever caused it happened in the previous hour or few.

This is the "New" link I was given:

https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=50525.msg2154284#new

It was so far back, I checked it a couple of times and couldn't make sense of how it happened this time.

Normally it's either edited, or more usually deleted and the link does its best job to land at whatever post follows that.

The odd thing here is this is the first post in a while that still existed as a valid target (i.e. wasn't deleted), and wasn't obviously edited.

AFAICT, Crew-1 thread metadata had its own SEU.

The last thread I clicked on in this manner was the Crew 1 discussion thread, which did have two new posts about the alarms that were spuriously sounded from Resilience overnight last night.

...

However, when I clicked the NEW icon, instead of being brought to the new post from today (the first new post in that thread since December of 2020), I was brought to Reply #548, posted on 11/15/20 I believe.
I encountered something similar, with that exact thread IIRC.

I've noticed that this frequently happens when the mods have merged two threads together, particularly if the "side thread" being merged in is itself substantial and/or spread out in time. It seems to confuse the forum software's ability to remember "where have you left off in this thread".

I've noticed it always happens after merges because I'm subscribed to email notifications for most threads I'm interested in, and (by default) notifications go out for splits and merges as well as for new replies.

When it works "right", it takes you to the oldest newly-merged-in post in the resultant thread. If that's older than the last post you'd previously read in the pre-merge thread, it will have the effect of "rewinding" you to the merge point. So, for instance, if a side thread was merged in which had some posts going back a month that you hadn't read (perhaps because you weren't following that thread when it was freestanding), it'll drop you into the merged thread starting a month ago.

Sometimes, though, the forum software seems to just get confused and give up, in which case it'll drop you at the first post and leave you to figure out what the heck happened. Other times it "rewinds" to a post somewhere in the middle whose connection to the merge is non-obvious (but presumably makes sense somehow in the database's internal representation).

Given that this is connected to merges, I suspect this erratic behavior is due to deeper limitations in how the forum software tracks thread reading progress across merges. As any programmers who've worked with revision control systems like Git or Subversion are no doubt painfully aware, merging is actually a very complex topic, algorithmically speaking, and it's not always obvious (or easy to compute) what the "best" resolution is.

(Posting this here because I can't find a specific thread for discussion of the relevant article. Mods, feel free to move this to somewhere more appropriate.)

Just wanted to make the site admins aware that many of the inline images in this recent article on the NSF main site are broken:

https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2021/04/blue-origin-complex-progress-new-glenn/

Specifically, this seems to affect all the images that are captioned as "via L2". Closer inspection reveals that these images were hotlinked directly from attachments on the forum side of NSF rather than actually uploaded to the WordPress side in connection with the article. Presumably these images are attached to posts in the L2 section, which is why they are failing to load in the article for those who aren't L2 members. (I can see how this mistake might've been missed when the article was posted, because the authors are presumably L2 members themselves and thus their browsers would've had the appropriate login cookies to give them access to the images. :) )

I've attached a screenshot showing what the problem looks like from a non-L2-member's perspective. In the screenshot I've opened Chrome's developer console to inspect the broken image and highlight the problematic hotlink URL.

FYI, I've also noticed similar "broken image" issues on several recent main-site articles. I haven't checked those in detail but I would guess they are broken for the same reason.

Great spot. Article fixed. Issue was the images weren't uploaded to the article via CMS but hotlinked. That's fine, but the hotlinks were to L2 sections thus non L2 members got a broken link.

Is there something weird going on with the timezone settings in this forum?  I know that we have to set our timezone offset in our profile settings (in the "look and layout" section), and that the forum's own clock was weirdly one hour west of UTC, instead of actually *at* UTC as one might expect.  And that I need to change it manually every time we go through a DST shift.  But today I noticed that it was off by an hour again, and now the correct offset for me is -4.  It was -3.  Did the forum's own clock finally get corrected to UTC and now everybody is off by an hour?
PSA #1: EST does NOT mean "Eastern Time".  Use "Eastern" or "ET" instead, all year round, and avoid this common error.  Google "EST vs EDT".
PSA #2: It's and its: know the difference and quietly impress grammar pedants.  Google "angry flower its" .

Not at all important, but weird:

In the User Profile, under Stats, the "Most popular boards by activity" display uses percentages that add up to a tiny amount. While it's obviously only the top ten forums being shown, it still doesn't make sense.

Using my own as an example (attached cap below), the percentages start at only 1% at the top and drops down to 0.15% for the tenth most active. That suggests that everything not displayed is not going to add up to the missing 95%.

Is this another example of the board software not being able work out percentages, or does "activity" include something not displayed. (Aside, the little pie-charts in the "Most popular boards by posts" display seems to be right, which is essentially a percentage display, so it's a weird fault.)

Over time, attachments to posts sometime mutate and deteriorate.

See this post from 2013 for an example.  All five attachments now appear as big black rectangles, which take up a lot of screen space and convey no information.  When downloaded, the PNG attachments are barely visible.

I too see black backgrounds on these images when viewed in the thread (grid lines and plots are barely visible).  However, if I click on them to see them full size the backgrounds revert to a very light gray and look like they were intended to. If I download them they also display correctly (as viewed in Windows Photo Gallery)

--------

Having looked at the images in more detail, the problem may be that they have a transparent background set, rather than an actual color. This may be confusing the forum software.

--------
Edit to add:  I've attached a copy of the first image which I downloaded and saved locally beforehand, and also a version where I have given it a white background to replace the transparent one.

Seem to getting corrupt text on older articles in the CMS - odd symbols at the end of a few words.

I’ve seen it on IPad OS (Safari) and Chrome/Win10.

I see them too with Firefox/Vista (yeah, I know!)

Looks like character strings to encode apostrophe and single/double quotation marks:

‘  open single quote

The older page was likely using a different character encoding, and these characters got messed up when the forum began using UTF-8.

This is about the front page stories rather than the forum:  when I print hardcopies of a story it's started cutting off the right hand edge of the text, as illustrated below. The amount of text lost seems to vary.
This seems to have started (or perhaps just gotten worse) in the past week.

Its the same for me printing from Firefox when using the "scale to fit" option.  A temporary workaround is to select 90% scaling (from the "print preview" page in Firefox) - this avoids clipping the RHS of the text.

This is a bug introduced in Firefox 90.0, supposedly fixed in 90.0.2 released this past Thursday.

I'm still on Firefox 89.0.2 so I haven't experienced it, though I've downloaded 90.0.2 and plan to install it tomorrow morning.

Happened again today. Got this error (got a screen grab of the error but can't find a way to post that.):

---
Error 1005 Ray Id: 6825db528eea74ab * 2021-08-21 18:17:10 UTC

What Happened?
The owner of this website (www.nasaspaceflight.com) has banned the autonomous system number (ASN) your IP address is in (14618) from accessing this website.

If I turn off my VPN, I can access the site again, and then after I turn back on the VPN, I seem to have no troubles at all. It seems to happen only when I have had the web site up for some time (days) and then try and access it with the VPN on. Again, turning off and back on the VPN seems to resolve it.

I get that sometimes. The error messages I get states Cloudflare has blocked the ASN your IP address was using. NSF's host must be using Cloudflare for security.

Edit: I recreated the error and attached it.

This is not really a bug per say, but I noticed a hard margin set for the left forum pane that shows the user posting's info.  For FutureSpaceTourist's sake....can we either make it more auto scaling or at least a little bigger?  I noticed more and more longer names getting chopped like this and was just curious if it is easily fixable or not.

Unless you like being FutureSpaceTouri    ;D

EDIT:  It just occurred to me.  Is there a max character length for a username?  If so, set the margin to a width that and this never happens.

Set by the admins, but I think the default is a 20 character limit. (Two more than FutureSpaceTourist.) However, that doesn't necessarily solve the issue, because (I believe) column sizes aren't set by character width, but pixel width, and the font is proportional, so 20 characters of capital 'W', 'G', etc is wildly different from 20 lower-case 'i's or 'l's. Setting it for the worst case means a lot of wasted space to cater for that rare event.

Not sure if FutureSpaceTourist himself can insert a zero-width space in his name between the 'e' and 'T' to allow more intelligent line-breaking, assuming phpBB even does that kind of line-breaking.

Have email notifications of new posts in subscribed threads been bottled up lately for other users, or is it just me?

I noticed an outage last night between roughly 4:00-6:00 UTC (2022-06-20) based on the timing of the last notification I received before the outage and the first after.

From what I can tell, the missed notifications were not re-sent; I had to catch up on the threads I missed by going to the "Notifications" page in my account settings and reading the threads with "New" labels on them to clear them so future notifications could be sent (as I have notifications set to "instantly, but only for the first unread reply").

After about 6:00 UTC, notifications started coming through immediately again for me, which continued through this morning. However, they stopped again sometime after 13:40 UTC (2022-06-20) and haven't resumed since, despite (per my Notifications page) many new posts having been made since then to threads I'm subscribed to.

I noticed the outage last night mainly because of the odd coincidence that I just happened to be migrating to a new personal email address and attempted to change my account's associated address (from Gmail to a personal domain) during that time. :) Since my verification code wasn't coming through, I was locked out of my forum account until the jam cleared at ~6:00 UTC (since evidently the forum software doesn't know how to keep the old address active pending the new one's verification...which is kind of a weird loophole that could lead to problems if someone mistyped an address, but I digress). During that time, I confirmed that the problem was not on my end (which I was initially afraid of since it's a personal domain address); I was able to send test messages to myself from other email providers (e.g. Gmail) and they were received instantly with no problems. Only NSF forum messages were bottled up. Additionally, I confirmed that some forum notifications had been missed during the first ~hour of the outage that should have been sent to my old Gmail before I requested the address change. So it doesn't appear to be connected at all to my own address change - although I figured I should mention it for full disclosure in case I'm wrong.

After ~6:00 UTC, my delayed NSF verification code emails came through (both of them, since I'd hit the "send new code" button at first to see if that would help), about a minute apart. The headers showed that they had evidently gotten stuck at NSF's third-party bulk mail provider (I'm guessing?), "Mailgun", having been generated by the forum at 5:05 UTC and received immediately at Mailgun's SMTP relay server, but then not handed off to my domain's receiving MX until 6:08 UTC, after which the message was promptly sent through the rest of the receiving chain and delivered to my inbox.

Hope this helps! Let me know if it would be helpful to provide any more information (e.g., headers from the verification emails that got delayed last night).

Update (just when I was about to post this): It looks like things maybe just came un-stuck, but maybe aren't perfectly working again yet. About half an hour ago (02:32 UTC) I finally got a new notification email from the NSF forum, for a new post that had just been made at that time; the headers show that the email was delivered without delay (within seconds). As in the past, I'm guessing that notifications that were generated during the outage were lost and won't be retried.

Edit: Looks like it's blocked up again shortly after posting the above. :( Only that one notification email at 2:32 UTC got through.

I haven't noticed any missing NSF emails of late.

I had problems a couple of weeks ago, but there were emails missing from other senders also, not just NSF, so I assume it was a problem with my email provider.  I also am using a personal domain, but it's running on the Gmail infrastructure.

I get a "The message body is empty" error when trying to post a message with a somewhat deep nested quote.  Trimming the quote resolved the issue and allowed me to post, but...

1. The error message was incorrect.
2. Would it be possible for the software to automatically trim nested quotes?  It's really quite painful to do this by hand using a touchscreen...

This is about the main page, not the forum section.
I use Microsoft Edge on my personal laptop and about 2 months ago, the Tweets by NSF section under Starbase Live on the right side on the main page no longer shows. I can see it on my cell phone but not on my laptop.

I've gone into Settings on my browser to change some settings to make it display again, but no joy.
Just wondering if anybody else has encountered this and the resolution to it.

It's not a big deal, just an inconvenience.

Do embedded tweets still show in the forums?

I use Firefox, not Edge, but to get embedded tweets to show both on the main pages and in the forums I have to create exceptions in Enhanced Tracking Protection for:
https://www.nasaspaceflight.com
https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com

Yes, embedded tweets still show up in the forum threads. I haven't had any issues with those, just the main page that started a month or two ago. I did make some changes in Tracking Protection, but it had no effect.
So, I should put the above 2 urls in Enhanced Tracking Protection or something similar in Edge?

Edit: Ok, I added the 2 urls to the Exception list under Tracking. I cleared my cache, closed Edge, and re-opened Edge. Unfortunately, the Tweets by NSF section still doesn't show up.

I don't have any further suggestions.  For me, the FF Enhanced Tracking Protection exceptions enabled tweets in "Tweets by NASASpaceflight" and tweets embedded in articles and forum posts.

Maybe someone more familiar with Edge can come up with something.

The mobile view of NSF forum (which is default on mobile phones, or enabled by the "Mobile" link at the page bottom) is no longer compatible with Chrome's dark mode. At least on Android phones. Text is very fat and hard to read, see screenshot, which is really hard to read when viewed in dark mode.

To enable Chrome dark mode

- set chrome://flags/#darken-websites-checkbox-in-themes-setting to Enabled
- restart Chrome
- open the settings and choose "Design"
- select "Dark" and check "darken websites"

Someone posted a way to search this forum using Google. If they could post that search parameter here, that would solve your search needs. Such a search parameter could be uses or adapted to other search engines.

Paste this into the Google search box:

[put your search terms here] site:forum.nasaspaceflight.com

Note, this will only work for the public threads, L2 stuff is not accessible by Google.

And the Google equivalent query to search in the title only should be

site:forum.nasaspaceflight.com intitle:"Forum Bug Reports"

See also https://churchofgoogle.org/search-tips.html
Just a friendly reminder that the "search tab" on the forum is behaving strange for the last few years. Here a screenshot of an example via NSF (left) which came up empty three times in row before a good result, versus a search engine (right).  Would be great if it was fixed.

I have been trying Dark mode and it works but has a couple of issues for me.
1. Quoted text is black/dark  which is unreadable to me on the darker background. I have to highlight it to read it.
2. Not specifically dark mode but the text is smaller in the quote and that makes it even harder to read. I can't find any text size adjusters in settings so I have to use Firefox's and that screws up the boxes in the forums at the sizes I use.

Just a couple of inputs. My eyes thanks you for the dark mode.

A trio of Topics have recently become unavailable. In the past, reorganisations always included 'redirects' to the replacement Topics. Not this on this occasion - have I missed something?

1) https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?board=54.0 was once L2 Commercial Cargo and Crew
2) https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?board=34.0 was once L2 Historical Section
3) https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?board=29.0 was once L2 Orion/Future Vehicles

NB my NSF bookmarks have not been updated in a long while so some of the above Topic titles may be out of date.

I can't seem to get to the forums on my Android phone anymore without scrolling down to the latest posts and entering there.  The link when you tap the three lines is gone.

The favicon has been updated to the new logo for a while now, but if you open an attached image in a new tab it will have the old favicon with the white background.

Fixed and updated to the new logo, woohoo!

I have a few annoying users blocked* so that their (always inane, never useful) posts don't show up in my view of forums threads.  I see that they posted a comment, but the body of their comment is replaced with a message saying I have them blocked.  It's a useful feature that I appreciate.

I noticed today that this doesn't work on mobile.  I'm logged in, and I'm seeing their posts :)  Not the end of the world, but it might be a bug.  Mobile platform is Samsung Android Chrome.

The forum suddenly looks different in my (Chrome) browser. Has anything happened? Have you upgraded to new forum software?
Suddenly there are cobalt blue bars at the top and bottom of the screen. There's no usual header bar with options to select from, no search, etc.
When I look at posts, I no longer see who's liked them. Container widths for everything seem to now span the full screen width.

If you have an unsupported device then the devices native browser is also unsupported once you no longer receive software updates. The older the device is the more likely breaking changes occur resulting in the user needing a new device and newer browser version. I'm not sure what the minimum hardware and software specifications are for our forum's custom SMF software version compared to the normal SMF version provided by Simple Machines. Apple products are typically supported for around ten years but can vary.

A note for future reference:
For forum help please always include your devices model name, model year, operating system version and revision number (typically in parenthesis on Apple products), your browsers and their version information. With most browsers you can download what is known as an Extended Support Release or ESR to provide security and functionality updates for your unsupported device for a certain specified length of time that does not add any new browser features.

Our SMF version is 2.0.15. See Client at the bottom and make sure your browser meets SMF requirements:
https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF2.0:Requirements_and_recommendations
I'm not sure if our custom SMF version uses any 2.1.x components, but if it does the additional following must be met:
https://wiki.simplemachines.org/smf/SMF1.1:Requirements_and_recommendations

Not a bug, really, just a weird forum behavior I've noticed before that I'm curious if there's a reason for - when I'm posting screencaps in a thread, any pictures with people in them seem to get a lot more view counts than those of space. For instance, in the NG-19 thread (https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=57030.0) at time of posting, most of the space pics have 5-10 views, but the two images of Mission Control (and even the generic NASA press photos of Woody Hoburg and Frank Rubio) have north of 40. Any idea why? Can't imagine Mission Control is that much more interesting to look at than a Cygnus space capsule.

I have a stone age iPhone SE (first gen) and recently I have had occasional load failures of forum pages. This happened an hour ago but unfortunately the phone reloaded the page successfully when I got home, so I didn't get a chance to take a screenshot.
I certainly will the next time it happens. The issue has been happening occasionally for a month or two.

iPhone SE (1st gen). Safari, iOs 15.7.7

The issue seems to happen when loading of forum pages is particularly slow. Now, my i.d. is only 4 characters yet sometimes I can type that and it will take the better part of 10 seconds to display it.

I don't believe this is the fault of the phone - it may be old and little better than a tin can and string, but it manages the BBC News, CNN. Scientific American et al without trouble.

Any suggestions most welcome (buy a tin can and string?), or similar experiences out there?

Best Regards,
Nic

Sigh, the inevitable has happened - links to tweets now start with x.com rather than twitter.com and as a result don’t automatically expand in a post to show the tweet.

Right now manually changing x to twitter seems to work. But I don’t know how long for.

Hopefully the plug-in that handles tweets will have an update soon? Or maybe we can tweak the code ourselves?
