Anik,

Looks like there was advance notice of this launch?

http://www.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=161943

Message dated 5th October 2006 from Safronov Ivan

Measat used Briz-M 88518 which was loaned from MO

I would guess, that the Kosmos is the Geizer (or Potok) relay satellite, which have always been launched under a Kosmos designator.
http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/potok.htm

Globus satellites were always named Raduga-1.

I am repeating my thinking about this launch from Plan of Russian launches thread:

"On October 31st this report informed that Proton rocket will launch Globus satellite in December...

On November 8th this report informed that Kosmos satellite will be launched by Proton-M rocket with Briz-M upper stage in the beginning of December...

I think that this is the same military launch, i.e. Kosmos satellite is Globus satellite..."

I think so. It is that or put it in museum along with the last Luch Altair. Last Raduga was also called Kosmos for a time.

Obviously, according to http://www.spacenews.ru/spacenews/live/full_news.asp?id=22165 (in Russian), Briz-M upper stage for this launch has arrived aboard An-124-100 aircraft to cosmodrome today...

Hey Anik, I found the photo of the Luch/Gelios-satellite (left side) in NPO-PM´s factory.
http://www.novosti-kosmonavtiki.ru/content/numbers/229/31.shtml
Also I have another photo from this satellite next to an older Express-A-type-sat.

This was my idea about the Cosmos-payload, instead of the Raduga/Globus satellite, which was announced. ;-)

Strange. That orbit won't suit either Globus or Geizer...

So what it it? Arkas?

Possibly, but it does seem to imply that it is the final orbit.

I'll keep an eye on things, but I'm giving the Delta most of my attention.

As for flight profile, most rumours are that this is a GSO launch, however the limited facts we have suggest LEO.  We'll have to wait and see.

Spacecraft "Raduga-1M" systems are in stable operation
10.12.2007

http://www.npopm.com/?cid=news&nid=31

"A new communication satellite "Raduga-1M" developed and manufactured at Reshetnev NPO PM was launched on December 9, 2007 from Baikonur launch site.

The satellite was orbited with the "Proton-M" launcher and taken under control of the Ground Control Centre.

According to the preliminary telemetry data processed during the launch, the satellite was placed into orbit, the booster separated as planned. "Raduga-1M" configuration parts deployed.

The spacecraft "Raduga-1M" is equipped with the modern multi-transponder transmission equipment serviceable within centimetric- and decimeter-wave bands, which ensures communication with mobile stations including mountain hard-to-reach regions"
