Title: Fregat Master Thread
Post by: Mighty-T on 11/22/2008 06:50 pm
In the current printed issue of the French aerospace magazine "Air & Cosmos" there is a small article on an upgrade of the FREGAT for dual-launching the Galileo spacecraft with the Sojuz launcher. According to that article, the new version will include the following changes:

- longer nozzle for the S5-92 motor to improve ISP
- enlarged tanks for +20% more propellant
- upgraded computer ("Bisser-3" -> "Bisser-6")

This will allow the FREGAT to increase its burn by 200s.
Apparently engine testing has already started in September and should last until September 2009.

Has anyone more information about this development? Will it be flight qualified in Russia or in Kourou?

NPO Lavochkin enterprise uses Biser computer only on Fregat. They have used Biser-3 computer on this upper stage up to 2007. Since 2007 they use Biser-6 computer on it.

On Elektro-L and Spektr-R spacecrafts NPO Lavochkin enterprise will use computers produced by MOKB Mars Syrov (http://www.mars-mokb.ru/) enterprise.

As for Biser computers produced by NPTs AP Pilyugin (http://www.npcap.ru/index.php?page_id=10) enterprise, they were used (are using, will be used) on following space rockets and upper stages:

Biser-2 - Zenit-2;
Biser-3 - Proton-M, Zenit-2S, Zenit-2SB40, Zenit-2SB60, DM-SL, Fregat;
Biser-4 - Buran;
Biser-6 - Angara, Fregat, DM-SLB, DM-03.

M1005 Mars Express
One of initial batch of five; two upgraded lithium batteries 9ER14PS-20, 60 Ah each after 0·5 year storage. Used only one attitude control system (ACS) hydrazine tank (-Z axis of Fregat) overfilling it with 11 kg of additional fuel, while the other ACS tank (+Z axis of Fregat) was kept empty, with all hydraulic pipelines re-moved to compensate for Mars Express centre of gravity. For the mission about 20 kg of hydrazine are required only, while each tank has a capacity of 40 kg. The cover material of the Fregat equipment bay was changed from Al-Mg alloy (AMG6) to Mg alloy (Mg-1), with the resulting mass saving of 5 kg. One of the two independent tracking systems of Fregat was removed and for most of the future flights, leaving the one certified for the range of 10,000 km. A satellite navigation unit (SNS) capable of receiving signals from the GPS and GLONASS was installed on the Fregat. The navigation data will go directly to the telemetry system, but is not used in the flight control loop. [News from Moscow № 22/2002]

Post by: Danderman on 02/27/2011 02:26 pm
I should mention here that Fregat-SB is not just a Fregat with an extra fuel tank, but rather that the "Fregat" part of the stage is a Fregat-M, which contains small additional propellant tanks affixed to the main tanks, like giant pimples or warts. I don't know if the "M" variant has upgraded avionics. I believe that the "pimple" tanks contain about a ton of additional propellant when they are all added together.

The "MU" "MT" variant of Fregat is in the works, this has similar "pimple" tanks, but they are larger.

The three capacities of Fregat are listed here…
http://www.laspace.ru/rus/fregat_construction.php

МОДЕРНИЗАЦИЯ РАЗГОННОГО БЛОКА «ФРЕГАТ»
http://vestnik.laspace.ru/archives/showproduct/1/2/
http://vestnik.laspace.ru/archives/download/1/2/

This deserves its own thread, so as not to get lost in the mix.

First off, drawings of the 3 variants of Fregat, showing the small and large pimple tanks. Apparently, its possible to fit any of the 3 variants with the large SB drop tank.

The "dry" mass of Fregat for the 3 variants are: 930 kg, 960 kg, and 1050 kg, which means that the small pimple tanks hold in the aggregate 500kg of prop but have a mass of only 30 kg, whereas the large pimple tanks hold 1850 kg with a dry mass of 80 kg.

Again, the three variants of Fregat are the standard, Fregat M and Fregat MU MT.

Post by: Danderman on 02/27/2011 02:39 pm
The "standard" Fregat, without the pimple tanks, has had some modifications since its first flight in the early 2000s.

First off, there has been an extensive program to reduce the dry mass of the stage, in 3 stages.

The base Fregat had a dry mass of 1100 kg, reduced to 980 kg in 2005, and now to 930 kg (not counting pimple tanks). This was largely accomplished by modernizing the electronics.  The Bizer-3 flight computer was updated to Bizer-6, and the telemetry unit was updated from BR9-TsK-1 to BR91-TsK-M4.  Also, lighter aluminum alloys were used in construction of Fregat.

Lastly, the specific impulse of the engine was increased from 327 to 331 seconds by a 200 mm extension of the engine nozzle. The extension is shown here:

The version with the large pimple tanks is MT, not MU:

http://www.b14643.de/Spacerockets_1/East_Europe_1/Soyuz-2/Gallery/Fregat.htm

From the same page, it can be deduced that:

Fregat-SB = Fregat-M plus large drop tank
Fregat-SBU = Fregat MT plus large drop tank. However, it should be noted that although the pimples for this version are larger than the Fregat-M pimples, they may not be exactly the same as the Fregat-MT pimples.

Fregat 2 = Fregat with 2 complete sets of tanks, its unclear whether one of the tank sets can drop off.

All of the current variants of Fregat have the upgraded electronics and other modifications mentioned above.

One other note: for the Glonass K1 launch, we don't know which version of Fregat was used.  It stands to reason that a standard version was launched, because only 1 satellite was the payload, rather than the two sats per launch which is the plan for Soyuz. IF Soyuz-2 launches Glonass from Baikonur, 2 at a time, its not clear which Fregat variant would be used.

Lastly, I have never reviewed earlier Fregat payloads to see if any them used the "M" variant. I suspect that the METOP may have used the "M", but I haven't checked.

Good summing up… but can you choose a different name for those tank extensions!

Also telemetry system consists of both БР-91ЦК-М6 and БР-9ЦК-1

Not sure if БР-91ЦК-М6 replaced БР-91ЦК-М4

I am probably wrong, but I have always thought that Fregat might be derived from the descent stage used on the third generation Luna spacecraft (Ye-8 series).   The first use might have been as the Fobos lower propulsion stage which performed the trans-Mars injection burns back in 1988.

For METOP, yes, there was a dual telemetry system as described above, but I am not sure that the dual system is used for all launches. Whether the prime telemetry system is M4 or M6, I can't say, although I do know that M6 has a mass about half that of M4, as it is a modernized version.

The same type of system is used in Soyuz and Progress, from the same factory, or at least that was the case until the new "M" iteration.

You are not wrong, although there were some mods between 1988 and 2000.

This begs the question as to the drop tanks used on the Luna series, how do they relate to the current SB drop tank?

After a little correction of the original Russian text:

“The engine chambers are not installed in a gimbal, as usual, but in the hinge, allowing its plane-parallel motion. By this way, a displacement of the thrust vector with regard to the center of mass of the upper stage, which is located very close to the engine head, is ensured. (In this specific case, the cardan joint did not provide the necessary arm to create a moment of thrust)”

This is getting a little confusing.

Fregat-M is supposed to be a standard Fregat with avionics upgrades plus the small "pimple" tanks. However, we are now seeing standard Fregats withe the avionics upgrades, so is the "M" variant simply a standard Fregat with the pimple tanks? How much longer are we going to see the standard Fregat, or will these be produced in parallel with the "M" and "MT" variants?

Title: Re: Fregat Master Thread
Post by: Nicolas PILLET on 12/07/2012 01:49 pm
Fregat-M is supposed to be a standard Fregat with avionics upgrades plus the small "pimple" tanks.

I don't agree. Fregat-M is a standard Fregat with an rearranged PO1 compartment (PO1 is the location of the telemétry system).

It means "located/belonging to/confined in a flat plane (of 2 dimensions)", as opposed to a gimball that makes the engine trace a sphere, typically. So, instead of rotation we have translation.

Well, I do. THAT is a hinge.

It sounds like the "hinge" is simply a gimbal that can only move in one dimension. The 6 main engines on Proton are arranged like that, they can only gimbal in one direction, out or in.

I suspect that the Saturn IB first stage engines similarly could only gimbal in one direction, at least the 4 outer engines.

How Fregat can get by with one engine that can only gimbal in one direction is a mystery to me. I assumed it couldn't gimbal at all, and all attitude control/roll control was handled by the ACS.

A hinge allows for gimbaling in one direction. A rocket engine that can gimbal in one direction allows for limited translation, without simultaneous support from the ACS.

Could you explain me this fact ?
If I understand correctly : a gimbal with a very small angle can be viewed as a little translation. Correct ?
Title: Re: Fregat Master Thread
Post by: patchfree on 12/12/2012 09:15 pm
Are you refering to a translation in a parallel plan of an engine (or a group of)? In this case the result is equivalent to gimbaling the engine vector, as the position of the engine move from the spacecraft center of gravity...

Someone knows when this system made its maiden flight on Fregat?

http://npcap.ru/napravleniya-deyatelnosti/novyie-i-perspektivnyie-razrabotki/integrirovannaya-inerczialno-astro-sputnikovaya-sistema-navigaczii.html

ASN has worked on Fregat in telemetry mode (i.e. its data were not used by BTsVM) since 2003. ASN first flight in normal mode (i.e. its data were used by BTsVM) was on 17 September 2009. Since that time there were 20 Fregat flights with ASN worked in normal mode. Also ASN has worked in telemetry mode on last DM-SLB flight. NPTs AP wants to use ASN in normal mode on next DM-SLB flight, but it depends on customer's permission. ASN will be installed on DM-03 too. In next DM-03 flight it will work in telemetry mode.

Last successful planetary missions launched by Fregat were Venus and Mars express , correct ? Phobos-Grunt of course wasn't too successful.
For both Venus and Mars express Fregat provided a TMI/TVI burn and then separated the spacecraft - but has a  Fregat in modern history actually ever successfully operated further away from earth ?
For the cancelled ESA/German moon lander they planned to have Fregat to take the lander all the way to lunar orbit including the LOI burn, and then release the lander. I'm wondering how feasible that would have been.

It appears that the last two sections are for PxOs only, with a cost under or around 100 million rubles for 14С737, and under 40 million for 14С227. So, what is the difference between the two objects, and why is one so much cheaper?

Also, this is the first time I have noticed article numbers for PxOs.

Introducing Fregat-SBU:

https://www.laspace.ru/press/news/events/20180530_fregat_angara/

Per the NPO Lavochkin website dated 30 May 2018 of new version of Fregat-SB called Fregat-SBU planned for Soyuz-5, Angara-A3 and potentially Angara-A5. A formal tender for Fregat-SBU series development is in work. Fregat-SBU is a planned universal replacement of all previous and current Fregat versions.

How would that work given the different mass capacity/performance requirements of each? Something like Fregat-SB or Briz-KM with a main body and then a drop tank, and then either resize the drop tank or add more depending on the LV?

It is not possible to answer that at this time. Unlike current launchers Fregat-SBU is purportedly sized for missions using 4 and 5 metre payload fairings. The design apparently takes the existing design features of Fregat-MT and Fregat-SB and combines them with new yet to be revealed features/technologies. I have asked certain people for a graphic of what it is expected to look like. Hopefully more info in the coming months.

In the list attached there are only the Fregat for CSG as "Fregat-M" (or Fregat-MT) named. (exception 1020 and 1021 were Fregat)
All units for Soyuz in Baikonur, Plesetsk or Vostochny are named as "Fregat".
In the most sources, the Fregat (No. 1022 ? and following) for these launch sites named as "Fregat-M"

The previous post lists items to be insured during transportation to various locations. It is from a tender issued by the manufacturer Lavochkin.

РБФ is a Fregat upper stage.
ГО is a fairing.
http://www.laspace.ru/company/products/launch-vehicles/fairings/
https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=39795.0

The 465ГК fairing listed is for Elektro-L №3. It is to be sent to Krunichev, for onward shipment along with the DM upper stage.

Gonets launch site is now to be Vostochny? Note absence of serial numbers.

Serial numbers №112-10 to №112-13 are for GLONASS. Prices match up with known contracts; and appear to exclude the Gonets procured Fregat and fairing.

Some of the prices are not for the items listed. №112-04 was manufactured for GLONASS, but the price is probably for fairing №111-301?

Fregat №122-07 was previously allocated to launch Arktika-M №1? Fregat №122-04 for Meteor №2-2.

Gonets: There was no launch with Fregat in a polar orbit from Plesetsk, until now. Maybe that's not possible. Who knows that?
So maybe the decision was Baikonur or Vostochny. And the only available launch pad in Baikonur 31/6
must be relieved.

NPO Lavochkin: three Fregat-M for OneWeb shipped to Baikonur

https://www.laspace.ru/press/news/projects/fregat_oneweb/

Google translate:

09/19/2019

September 18, 2019 from the territory of the Scientific and Production Association named after S.A. Lavochkina (part of Roscosmos State Corporation) 3 containers were dispatched with Fregat-M booster blocks developed by NPO Lavochkina JSC. On September 19, the goods were delivered by flight to the Krainy airfield serving the Baikonur cosmodrome.

As part of the Soyuz-2 launch vehicle, the Frigate-M boosters will provide launching of spacecraft of the British OneWeb satellite system. The first launch of OneWeb satellites from the Baikonur Cosmodrome is planned for the fourth quarter of 2019.

In June 2015, Roscosmos State Corporation signed a contract with Arianespace and OneWeb for the 21 commercial launch of 672 communication satellites of the OneWeb space system on Soyuz-2 launch vehicles with booster units of the Frigate family from Baikonur, Vostochny and Guiana Space Center cosmodromes. . It is planned that due to the full coverage of the Earth’s surface, the orbital constellation of OneWeb communication satellites will allow users around the world to provide broadband Internet access.

The creation of the Frigate booster block allowed Russia to significantly strengthen and expand its position in the international market for the provision of spacecraft launch services. Since 2000, 78 launches of Fregat booster blocks of various modifications from 4 cosmodromes have been carried out: Baikonur, Plesetsk, Vostochny, Guiana Space Center.

In the launchschedule at NovKos I see 2020 8 launches with Fregat participation within 3 months.
At the beginning of January there are probably still holidays.
Plesetsk: end Jan. Meridian-M, Feb. Glonass-M, March Glonass-K
Baikonur: end Jan. - March 3 x OneWeb
Kourou: March Falcon-Eye 2
Vostochny: April OneWeb

Is that possible? Does anyone know that?
Thanks in advance.

With respect to Q1 2020 - probably yes.
With respect to whole year 2020 plan - it looks doubtful to me.

For GLONASS, Roskosmos has accepted Fregat and fairings №112-11, №112-12, №112-13, №112-14, №112-15.

One Fregat and two fairings have been accepted for Gonets-M. There is a reference to Fregat №112-502, so I guess that №112-501 is for Gonets-M?

Yes, key digit is 2 that means order from Roskosmos. Fairing 112-501 has flown with Kanopus. So, instead of it, probably, fairing 122-06 will be used for Gonets.

At the Vostochny Cosmodrome, four acceleration blocks Fregat produced by NPO Lavochkina JSC (part of Roscosmos State Corporation) were delivered. The cosmodrome accepts booster blocks in such quantities for the first time. Specialists of TsENKI - Vostochny Space Center, together with specialists of the Lavochkin NPO, accepted and installed them in the warehouse of blocks of the Technical Complex.

All work went on normally. In the storage mode, the Frigate booster blocks will remain until the start of work in March 2020. Launches are planned as part of OneWeb launch campaigns in 2020.

In addition, five Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicles are in storage mode in the assembly and test building, three of them are assembled in “packages” (assembly of the first and second stages). This year, work was carried out by specialists of the Vostochny Space Center branch and the Progress rocket and space center in accordance with the schedule.

The information are very confusing.
NPO Lavochkin is to blame, on their website there is no Fregat-M.
Only Fregat, Fregat-MT and Fregat-SB.

There: http://www.laspace.ru/upload/iblock/3fa/3fa153e9efbb42aa7c48fbfa269e9b2d.pdf
on page 149 (pdf page 151) second column in the table
are also modernized Fregat for Baikonur and Plesetzk designated
with "РБФМ" -> (Разгонный блок Фрегат-M I think), so Fregat-M. What would be the difference anyway?

And then the Fregat for Oneweb with two numbers 133-18 and 123-01.  :-\

Yes!

But NPOL in its press-releases calls Fregats launched from CSG as Fregat-M and Fregat-MT.
When Fregats for OneWeb were delivered to Baikonur NPOL called them as Fregat-M. The same was during rollout. But after launch Roskosmos and NPOL removed M from name of Fregat.
Now Fregats delivered to Vostochniy, and they call them simply Fregat.

One source has told me that Fregats ordered for OneWeb launches from Baikonur and Vostochniy call simply Fregat. Another source said that all Fregats ordered for OneWeb launches from three cosmodromes call Fregat-M. The third source has told that there are no Fregat-M during launches from Baikonur, Plesetsk and Vostochniy on Soyuz rocket. Indeed it is very confusing.

And after that comes №142-503, for the third flight of Gonets-M on Soyuz Fregat?

Fregat №122-05 for CAS500-1

The ПхО from this Fregat was used for Meteor-M №2-1?

Meteor-M №2-1 used Fregat №122-01, taken from Luna-Glob. It required a different ПхО because of the fairing. Luna-Glob was to use a 14С737 fairing.
https://www.laspace.ru/upload/iblock/f21/f21fe6e4e2ddec3f0d89c982f68755ac.jpg

The ПхО, or transfer compartment, sits between the rocket, payload and fairing.
https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=39795.msg1503460#msg1503460

So what is the serial number of the ПхО?

...

It is not known exactly what the "M" stands for. There are no technical details about this "Fregat-M".
All current Fregats are been modernized, even those without "M".
But NPO Lavochkin separates in its press releases, Fregat-M at the CSG and Fregat at the Russian launch sites.
In the "Novator" magazine, too, there is clean separation. The Fregat-M is adapted for the launch at the CSG, without saying exactly what was changed.

Aha thanks for investigating! What does that mean now?
I still don't know what it means Fregat-M or Fregat.
I almost suspect it doesn't matter.  ???

Soon the 100th deployment of a Fregat will take place.
Perhaps there will be a report from the manufacturer with new details.

".....The universal upper stage Fregat was created by the Lavochkin Science and Production Association and is intended for use as part of medium and heavy launch vehicles to place spacecraft in various specified orbits. The main upper stage marked the beginning of a whole family of high-performance upper stages, which are created and built on its basis.

The basis of Fregat design and layout is a block of tanks based on a monoblock support structure. It has a torospherical configuration consisting of six welded together spherical containers separated by spherical bottoms. Four of them are tanks oxidizer and propellant, two containers are compartments to accommodate onboard instruments and equipment (one of them hermetically sealed). One of the containers (pressurized) houses the control system monoblock, including satellite navigation equipment and fans of the thermal mode system, while the other (unpressurized) houses the small instrument compartment, service units, as well as high-pressure balloons of the cruise propulsion system and the stabilization, orientation and launch support propulsion system.

Fregat upper stage provides efficient execution of all tasks related to injection of one or more spacecraft into operational orbits or away from Earth trajectories. The entire injection process is performed autonomously without any intervention from Earth. The highest reliability and near-perfect accuracy of injection provide the upper stage with undeniable competitive advantages over global counterparts.

Next OneWeb mission: The number on the Fregat transfer compartment 123-03.
https://www.roscosmos.ru/32187/

The numbers on the covers of the Fregat avionic look different.
Is this already the repaired Fregat 133-16?
According to recent experience, the whole unit will be referred to as number 123-03.

Containers with two Fregat-MT upper stages developed by the Lavochkin Science and Production Association (part of Roskosmos State Corporation) were shipped from the seaport of St. Petersburg to French Guiana. They are intended for use in upcoming launch campaigns operated by the European launch services provider Arianespace.

The Fregat-MT upper stage is a modification of the Fregat upper stage for launches from the Guiana Space Center, and provides the entire process of launching spacecraft in accordance with the flight mission without interference from Earth. The ability to launch payloads from four cosmodromes (Baikonur, Plesetsk, Vostochny, GKTs) in different geographical zones is one of the clear competitive advantages of the product in the world market.

The Russian-European project Soyuz at the Guiana Space Center began in 2003, when a decision was made at a governmental level to launch the Soyuz-ST rocket family from the European launch site in French Guiana. Within the framework of the decisions made, a number of intergovernmental agreements were signed, which laid the legal foundation for the signing of contracts for the construction of the ground infrastructure of the Soyuz launch complex, the manufacture and shipment of Soyuz-ST launch vehicles and Fregat upper stages to the Guiana Space Center.

On September 14, containers with Fregat-M upper stages developed by the S.А. Lavochkin (part of the State Corporation "Roscosmos"). The products were delivered by road to JSC "Sea Port of St. Petersburg", after which the containers were loaded onto a sea vessel, which on September 24 at 03:00 departed for the port of Pariakabo, Kourou (French Guiana). It is planned that the transportation of the Fregat by sea will take about 2 weeks.

The products are prepared for the implementation of the planned launch campaigns from the Guiana Space Center (Kuru Cosmodrome). In particular, these upper stages are intended for use within the launch programs of the OneWeb satellite communications system and the European global satellite navigation system Galileo.

The Fregat-M upper stage is a modification of the Fregat RB for launches from the Guiana Space Center and provides the entire process of launching spacecraft in accordance with the flight mission without interference from the Earth. The ability to launch a payload from four cosmodromes (Baikonur, Plesetsk, Vostochny, GKTs) in different geographic zones is one of the clear competitive advantages of the product in the world market.

The Russian-European Soyuz project at the Guiana Space Center began in 2003, when a decision was made at the government level to launch Soyuz LV from the European cosmodrome in French Guiana. As part of the decisions taken, a number of intergovernmental agreements were signed, which laid the legal basis for signing contracts for the creation of the ground infrastructure of the Soyuz launch complex, the manufacture and shipment of the Soyuz-ST launch vehicle and the Fregat upper stages to the Guiana Space Center. In 2005, the construction of a launch complex for the Soyuz-ST LV began; in May 2011, the official ceremony of handing over the launch complex to the European Space Agency and the cosmodrome operator, Arianespace, took place. The first launch of the Soyuz-ST LV took place in October 2011.

cross post from OneWeb F12 launch
https://twitter.com/roscosmos/status/1455550325876740105

The Baikonur Cosmodrome is preparing for the December launch of OneWeb spacecraft as part of mission 37

Fregat upper stage is being prepared in the assembly and test facility: assembly of circuits, pneumatic-vacuum and electrical tests

That's an old picture.

https://www.roscosmos.ru/23681/

But it shows a Fregat with the number 1038 in Baikonur.
According to the Roscosmos article before the launch of Kanopus-V-IK.
And that's confusing for me again. Most sources assign the 1038 to the launch of the Sentinel 1A in Kourou.
