Three minutes at least of lack of comms. Eileen didn't answer back on a request to repeat from CAPCOM.

I can't help, I'm not in work

CAPCOM appologise for the LOS - phew. Five minute loss of comms due to lack of signal strength. Damn my heart was in my mouth there.

Ok, that happens from time to time, but usally in areas we know to expect it. That was a 6minute 20 second LOS and it was on the Orbiter, not JSC. Quiet a long one.

Why would the deorbit burn for the landing site furthest east (KSC) come earlier than Edwards or White Sands ... I figured the window would be for Edwards first, it being furthest west ... am I missing something?

Offline Chris Bergin

You mean why go for KSC first? Cause it's primary choice?

After that, she'll go around another Orbit and try White Sands, if not third attempt on the same orbit is a few mins later for KSC (2) and so on.

Tuesday, Aug. 9

Orbit:De-Orbit and Landing time:
217.....04:05 AM.....05:08 AM...Kennedy Space Center
218.....05:37 AM.....06:39 AM...White Sands, NM
218.....05:41 AM.....06:43 AM...Kennedy Space Center
219.....07:11 AM.....08:13 AM...Edwards AFB, CA
219.....07:13 AM.....08:14 AM...White Sands, NM

Ok, thanks Chris - the chart helped. I was thinking in terms of the deorbit burn for all three possibles occuring within a single orbit, not staggerd in multiple passes as you show. Thanks again! :)

Offline Chris Bergin

Roger that :)

BBC did a live report from KSC and say it's very likely it will be Edwards.

Leroy is properly dressed today, so the shuttle will make it back no problems. ;)

Weather says generally the same at KSC, but less moisture in the air =less chance of low clouds.

That line is right, it's just getting light here :)

Damn, I forgot to do the "Leroy Shirt Choice Drama" story yesterday ;)

I'll never get used to see the Orbiters going backwards in space. :)

Go.

Big picture is instability for KSC. 20-25. Thunderstorms building.

Forecast doesn't look great, I'd say Edwards.
