Mars Pathfinder Update and Discussion
« on: 03/18/2019 12:59 pm »
A very belated update

NASA'S MARS PATHFINDER MAY HAVE LANDED AT THE EDGE OF AN ANCIENT INLAND MARTIAN SEA

Quote
A new paper just published indicates that NASA's Mars Pathfinder rover landed between what was once a vast northern ocean and an inland sea to the south. The area around Pathfinder's landing site was once subjected to catastrophic flooding from that sea, with some floods reaching heights of nearly a kilometer and moving at over 500 kilometers per hour!

IIRC, the landing site was chosen because it is in an outflow channel, Ares Vallis.

Bought my first computer so I could get into the Pathfinder chat room. Told people not to worry about the comms trouble with Sojourner when it landed because I'd read the detailed specs on the radio and knew a slight temperature mismatch after landing would probably move the ends out of sync for a few hours.

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

3d data for the mission now available as a single ZIP file rather than thousands of file to be downloaded one by one:
https://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/mpf/mpfl-m-imp-5-3dposition-v1.zip

Browsable/downloadable single files:
https://pds-geosciences.wustl.edu/mpf/

Files are in VRML1.0 format, not supported by most 3d viewer; conversion nto VRML 2.0 needed: converter from Silicon Graphics, same company which created original VRML models in 1997 (now all links are broken)

It would be cool to try 3d reconstruction using modern technologies, like it is being done for Perseverance landing site, but zip files for imagery are not available yet, they must be downloaded one by one...

They appear to be available for bulk download here (Select "All Images: In Query").

Very interesting site to search/filter images; about the bulk download, I see it creates a batch file containing the list of wget commands needed to download each single file:

wget -nc -O i930290r.img https://pds-imaging.jpl.nasa.gov/pds/prod?q=OFSN+%%3D+/data/mpf/imp///mpim_0001/apxssite/seq0071/c1246xxx/i930290r.img+AND+RT+%%3D+RAW
