We sure heard a lot of news about chang'e 4 landing on the dark side of the moon and yet very little footage or images is out there.  Not like how we got drowned in Apollo and Opportunity footage/images.

It's China, of course they aren't releasing all of them to public, just like they didn't release most from Chang'e 3/Yutu.

But they have released some. My twitter thread of chang'e 4 related stuff: https://twitter.com/LaunchStuff/status/1080690193391341568

Oh this helps a little.  I don't know why they wouldn't show things.  There's no secret, we know what the moon looks like.  We have about a billion photos from the times our boys went up there.

I'm asking because I want to take a look at rock formations on that side of the moon.  I'm a big fan of House Rock from 16 because it showed an un-weathered rock of that size just sitting there, while most rocks are blasted to bits. I don't see many rocks of substantial size at all from the shots that were released.

Years back the first high resolution mosaic of Chang'e 1 data was released with great fanfare. The premier attended the ceremony. The chief scientist proclaimed a new crater was discovered from the image. But that didn't turn out well. A few over-enthusiastic fans downloaded the image and discovered that was no new crater but a duplication due to misaligned mosaic. The media reported that with equal fervor and caused a great deal of embarrassment to that scientist. I could almost imagine the leader high up angrily dictated: "No more slip up!" So there is every reason NOT to release the images.

Because they paid for it and their scientists (and some close international partners) will gain from it. Just like many others.

Stupid? Yes. Understandable? Also yes.

We've become spoiled by NASA. Other countries are more careful about what photos they release for various reasons. Give their scientists first use of the pictures, keep technical details secret, etc. NASA believes that since American taxes were used to fund missions, tax payers should get to see what they paid for. Because of our free press system, that means everyone gets to see the pretty pictures.

Note that we never get to see NRO photos unless politicians think we need to or they're declassified decades later.

So, maybe later we'll see more Chang'e 4 images and video. Maybe not.

We've already seen photos and a great video of the landing. Checkout the Chang'e 4 thread in the science section.

It's a misconception that the data are not available.  Check these links:

Chang'e 3 images:

http://planetary.s3.amazonaws.com/data/change3/pcam.html

And this blog post with other information including how to get original data - but it needs updating, links are broken.  The point is, it was made widely available and I think it could still be found if the proper links could be tracked down.

Oh yes, how about this from NAOC:

Lots of multimedia files.

You should look for that on the Chang'e-4 lunar operation dedicated thread at https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=47004.0
