Climate Change students help CryoSat-2 Arctic campaign

http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Cryosat/SEM1OKOFGLE_0.html

28 April 2006

In an unusual step, European scientists participating in the ESA CryoSat validation experiment on the Greenland ice sheet will soon be joined by six students from the Climate Change College. The students will be given an exciting opportunity to take part in an extensive programme of field experiments in preparation for the CryoSat-2 mission.

CryoSat-2 on the road to recovery

http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Cryosat/SEMAD0Q11ZE_0.html

12 March 2007

Building a satellite in just three years is without doubt an ambitious undertaking. Nevertheless, the decision to rebuild CryoSat and recover the mission includes just that goal. A year on and the mission is now well on the way to recovery, with a design that incorporates no less than 85 separate improvements.

Scientists and polar explorers brave the elements in support of CryoSat-2

http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Cryosat/SEMHIYLJC0F_0.html

19 April 2007

It is perhaps an unlikely combination – an international team of scientists stationed in Svalbard, Norway and two polar explorers crossing the North Pole on foot. Both teams, however, are currently part of a common effort to collect vital data on the ground and from the air in support of ESA's ice mission CryoSat-2.

ESA satellite guides polar explorers across disintegrating sea ice

http://www.esa.int/SPECIALS/Cryosat/SEM5NTEVL2F_0.html

12 June 2007

Two Belgian explorers currently nearing the end of a staggering 2000 km trek across the Arctic Ocean were recently guided through hazardous conditions using observations from Envisat, as sea ice in the Lincoln Sea began to break up unexpectedly.

Scientists endure Arctic for last campaign prior to CryoSat-2 launch

http://www.esa.int/esaCP/SEMWGM2QGFF_index_0.html

9 May 2008

An international group of scientists has swapped their comfortable offices for one of the most inhospitable environments on the planet to carry out a challenging field campaign that is seen as the key to ensuring the data delivered by ESA's ice mission CryoSat will be as accurate as possible.

An Earth observation mission does not just involve the building of a satellite, it also includes the all-important infrastructure to control the satellite and handle the data - the ground segment. As ESA prepares for the launch of CryoSat-2 at the end of the year, its associated ground segment is now ready.

ESA PRESS RELEASE No. 21-2009

CryoSat ready for launch: Media Day at IABG/Munich

Paris, 4 September 2009

On Monday 14 September media representatives will have the opportunity to attend an in-depth CryoSat background briefing at IABG's spacecraft test centre in Ottobrunn near Munich, Germany. Project managers from ESA and industry, as well as scientists and other experts, will give presentations on the spacecraft and its scientific objectives and will be available for individual interviews. The programme (see below) includes a visit to the clean room to see the satellite at first hand before it is packed and shipped to Kazakhastan.

The European Space Agency's CryoSat satellite is designed to provide new measurements of the extent and the thickness of the Earth's polar ice sheets. CryoSat's innovation is that it will not only be able to map the extent of the ice cover but will also measure the thickness of the ice sheets. This will provide information on ice volume and will therefore further our understanding of the effects climate change is having, and will have, on global ice cover.

After the successful launch in 2002 of Envisat, the largest Earth observation satellite ever built, ESA started to develop the Earth Explorer missions in order to provide a moderate-cost, fast response to important scientific issues using cutting-edge technologies. As the first of these missions, the original CryoSat was launched in 2005, but the launch resulted in failure with the remains of the satellite crashing down near the North Pole shortly after lift-off. Following the successful launch of ESA's gravity mission GOCE on 17 March of this year and the upcoming launch of  ESA's water mission SMOS in November, the CryoSat mission will finally get off the ground with the spacecraft rebuilt by prime contractor Astrium, becoming ESA's third Earth Explorer in orbit.

Scheduled for launch this December aboard a Dnepr launcher from Baikonur in Kazakhstan, CryoSat is set to significantly improve our knowledge of global ice mass. The mission will enhance our understanding of how the polar regions are influenced by climate change as well as our knowledge of the interaction between sea ice and the oceans. It may also trigger a number of practical applications, such as improved understanding of ocean circulation and greater insights into current and future changes in sea level.

ESA's CryoSat-2 has delivered its first data just hours after ground controllers switched on the satellite's sophisticated radar instrument for the first time. CryoSat-2 was launched on 8 April and has been performing exceptionally well during these critical first few days in orbit.

23 April 2010 - Taking advantage of NASA's 'Operation Ice Bridge' campaign, measurements of Arctic sea ice have been acquired from an aircraft flying under CryoSat-2's orbital path. These measurements offer an early opportunity to check the quality of the newly launched CryoSat-2 satellite data over sea ice.

Today, participants at the Living Planet Symposium have been hearing about ESA's most recently launched mission, CryoSat-2. In orbit for almost three months, the satellite is in excellent health with scientists very encouraged by the first ice-thickness data presented at the symposium.

26 October 2010

As CryoSat-2 works to detect shifts in global ice cover, it carries one small but significant passenger. A miniaturised sensor evolved from automobile stability control systems is checking the satellite’s rate of spin – Europe’s first MEMS device designed for space navigation.

Cryosat ice mission returns first science

20 December 2010

The Cryosat-2 spacecraft has produced its first major science result.

Radar data from the European satellite has been used to make a map of ocean circulation across the Arctic basin.

Cryosat's primary mission is to measure sea-ice thickness, which has been in sharp decline in recent decades.

But its ability also to map the shape of the sea surface will tell scientists if Arctic currents are changing as a result of winds being allowed to blow more easily on ice-free waters.

CryoSat ice data now open to all

1 February 2011

Scientists can now tap into a flow of new data that will help to determine exactly how Earth's ice is changing. This information from ESA's CryoSat mission is set to make a step change in our understanding of the complex relationship between ice and climate.

ESA–NASA collaboration furthers sea-ice research

19 April 2011

A carefully executed operation to validate data from CryoSat has shown what can be accomplished when ESA, NASA and others join forces to further our understanding of how the fragile polar environment is responding to climate change.
