Last video on soldering our machined rocket fuel injectors (bit.ly/3crKnMF ) got a few of you asking if we dropped the idea of testing 3D printed swirlers. The answer is no! Last week @DigitalMetal3D sent us a bunch of them, organized here in a BPM5 engine configuration:
...and we have stainless steel injector flanges for our 3D printed stainless steel coaxial swirl nozzles! Gearing up to test 6 different injector configurations on our 5kN engine soon, before we populate an injector area 25 times larger than this one for Spica's 100kN engine. 🚀
Tuesday we received the long-awaited container for Spica's 100kN rocket engine test stand! More parts are on their way, but before they arrive, have a sneak peek at how it will roughly look like!🚀You can help us speed its development by supporting us at copsub.com/support-us
In-between the live streams from Portugal of student teams launching their rockets in Europe's first rocketry challenge last Saturday, we got stacking the top domes of Spica's propellant tanks! That was one successful weekend! 🚀
We have now upgraded electronics for our coaxial swirl injector water flow test stand to make the data collection process more automated and we have also machined a new metal housing for the swirl nozzles. This means we expect to start mass testing >100 swirlers this Saturday. 🚀
MEGA PARACHUTE TEST DAY! 🪂After months of weather, schedule and pandemic delays, we finally have GO weather to perform FOUR parachute skydive tests tomorrow for various parts of the Spica rocket recovery system - an updated space capsule ballute and 3 booster parachute designs.

WE DID IT! We made our first coaxial swirl injectors for the BPM5 rocket engine! There's still a few variants to go, not to mention leak & water-flow testing, but we can wipe off some sweat now. Things are looking positive and we're aiming for lots of engine tests around Xmas! 🚀
You really don't want your hammer to miss when printing in serial numbers on multiple rocket engine fuel injectors! 😱🚀
It's alive!🚀 Spica's 100kN rocket engine main valve actuator works thanks to Adam! It's his MSc project at @DTUtweet. Precise control of propellant feed valves is essential in the engine start-up sequence and we're thankful for @WITTENSTEIN_SE helping us find the right gearbox!
Rocket engine fuel injectors go through a lot and are often under lots of pressure! 🚀They definitely deserve a nice, warm, preferably ultrasonic, bath once in a while. Especially after they have just been soldered. Photo: Martin Dyngbo
Join our 15 engine tests on livestream April 4th & 5th where we will be testing 6 different coaxial swirl injectors! 🚀Set your live stream reminder here: youtu.be/r3ZjTpxpI1IWe are thrilled to spend the Easter holidays with you for our largest test campaign ever!
