Thread for PLD Space's first launch. I think there is a mistake in the Twitter post. I believe the launch window starts at 31 May (not 30 May) at 8 am local (06:00 UTC). The YouTube stream is counting down to 31 May at 03:30 UTC (5:30 am local). Also, I believe it is not CET (Central European Time at UTC+1 hour) but CEST (Central European Summer Time at UTC+2 hours).

Abort!  Circa 1 or 2 seconds after ignition.  The engine stopped firing during the moment changing from the close-to-pad camera to the erector camera.

Several quick ventings from what is, I assume, near the top of the first stage.

I don't speak Spanish.  Any explanation of what happened?

The restrictions apply to this location as it is highly prone to forest fires in this time of year. We're basically near, at, or above 40C for the greater part of the summer and adding a rocket into the mix doesn't help when the location is next to a natural preserve. Miura 1 is only flying twice, maybe three times tops. Then it's all from French Guiana with Miura 5

Bold Test mine.  That's going to be difficult to test. The heat generated from engine startup might cause the tension to slacken. A windy situation could also cause that. Even a very hot day could affect the cables. Looks like they may need some hot-fire exercises to test the reconfigurations.

They did change the timing of when they test if the umbilical has been released. The problem last time was that the test was too close to the actual separation time, so that a 0.1 s delay in separation caused the test to indicate that separation had not occurred. Presumably, they have done tests to measure the variability of the separation timing, to make sure the test is after the latest the separation could occur, plus some margin, while ensuring that a late separation won't interfere with the launch.

The timeline was 6 minutes burn time and 12 minutes MET to splashdown of TF-1 followed by recovery.

The burn was only about two minutes.

As per the press kit (page 10), the nominal burn duration is 110 seconds.

Looks like a deck of cards was released inside the nose cone, which then settled at the tip as vehicle re-entered the atmosphere.

Those were photographs of PLD Space workers.

Left a brief summary on twitter based on what was said on livestream. Might have underperformed but gathered data from all the phases of flight they wanted. Still, we'll wait to see what they release once they look through all the data and more importantly, the rocket made it back. Now to see if they can find it in the dark Atlantic

MIURA 1 successfully launched, although it did not achieve its target altitude of 80km, instead topping out at 47km. I'm sure the team got a ton of useful data nonetheless, and they do plan to recover the vehicle itself for further investigation.

I think 2, 3, or 4 are the correct answers, since PLD has aspirations to perform orbital launches (and it would be awkward if the main PLD thread weren't in the same subforum as individual PLD launches). Of course, whatever happens should probably impact non-US commercial companies in general: while Indian and Japanese companies are generally reliably placed into the Indian and Japanese subforums, German companies seem to end up in Commercial Space Flight General, while British, Australian, and East/Southeast Asian companies are mostly there too but with occasional outliers ending up in the International/Other section (which seems to be primarily focused on government-led programs).

please no commercial - that is just a collection of random stuff, where it is difficult to find anything (plus it is inconsistent which companies are there and which are not)... rename this section to "European Launchers" and move all european stuff here (e.g. RFA)

Very strange that the change in vehicle altitude from 80 to 50 km was not communicated to the public before launch. I went back and rewatched the livestream with English translated subtitles and could find no mention of the change. The commentators were presumably reading from a prepared script and said the launch was going to 80 km, along with a graphic also giving the same height. The reduction means the launch did not reach space by anyone's definition and would have greatly reduced the amount of zero-g time for the payload. The vehicle was designed to put 100 kg to 150 km.

Some of the flight control graphics were briefly shown. There was a call out of "46500" which could be height reached in metres (46.5 km). It was also mentioned that the cards seen in the nose cone are photos of PLD Space employees.

Confirmation that recovery was unsuccessful, even though the parachute appears to have deployed and allowed for significant braking. No explanation as to what failed regarding the final descent and splashdown, although by reading between the lines I'm guessing something with the parachute is likely to have given way leading to a hard splashdown.

Some Conclussions of the Press Release:

-MIURA1 reached 2600km/h.
-The subsonic phase was much more demanding than expected.
-More than 1000 points of improvement have been identified for implementation in MIURA5.
-It has not yet been decided whether the second MIURA1 will be launched.
-7 new test benches are to be built in Teruel.
-There are no plans to sell engines.
-MIURA5 is expected to be used in different spaceports (not only in GUYANA).
-Development of all MIURA5 subsystems is progressing well and they plan to do the first subsystem tests by the end of 2023.
-MIURA5 stage separation mechanisms are already being tested.
- First MIURA5 launch planned for 2025/2026.

Trajectory was flattened because of upper-level wind analyses showing elevated risk of debris reaching the "near range" (launch pad, beaches and coast) in the event of an accidental or commanded vehicle breakup. Ran the line to the last moment to decide which trajectory to actually fly: instead of 80 km (initial plan) reach 50 km (actual).
Plots show the expected vs measured flight data.
As mentioned above, there was a challenging subsonic phase, due to larger than expected RCS action causing roll control authority anomalies, possibly caused by the large aft fins catching on the strong crosswinds between 1 and 4 km altitude. However, supersonic behavior was actually better than expected, and the oscillation didn't amplify, allowing it to fly true for the rest of the trajectory. Reentry behavior was also better than expected, and aerobrakes did well, even though their actual behavior was very difficult to model and large uncertainties remained pre-flight.
All ZARM payloads received their data as per contract.
A cheese wheel was flown as per current aerospace tradition for a maiden vehicle flight :) The "ahuyentalobos" brand was flown, which loosely means "wolf scarecrow" and hints at the "wolves" they had to scare off in order to succeed.
