ISS Expedition 68 crew to perform five spacewalks.

Cosmonauts will use the ERA robotic arm, to be operated from inside the station by cosmonaut Anna Kikina.

20 SEP, 14:47

BAIKONUR /Kazakhstan/, September 21. /TASS/. Members of Expedition 68 to the International Space Station (ISS), whose Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft is to blast off on September 21, are planning to carry out five spacewalks during their 188-day mission, cosmonaut Dmitry Petelin said on Tuesday.

"Five spacewalks are planned to be held during our spaceflight. The work will be quite intense, because shortly upon our arrival we will start preparing our spacesuits for the first spacewalk," he told an online news conference at TASS.

"Later, spacewalks will be held every two weeks. The bulk of work will be aimed at integrating the multi-function laboratory module (MLM) into the station," the cosmonaut added.

During their spacewalk, cosmonauts will use the ERA robotic arm, to be operated from inside the station by cosmonaut Anna Kikina.

Apart from the main tasks, the crew will run various experiments, launch satellites and perform other tasks related to the station’s equipment.

A Soyuz-2.1a rocket carrying the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft will blast off from the Baikonur space center in Kazakhstan at 16:54 on September 21. The spacecraft’s crew will comprise Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin and NASA astronaut Francisco Rubio. Their space mission is to last 188 days, until March 28. It will be the first Soyuz flight under the seat swap agreement. The spacecraft will also carry about 120 kilograms of payload.

Russian cosmonauts plan to play football aboard ISS.

Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin plan to play with NASA astronaut Francisco Rubio.

20 SEP, 14:57

MOSCOW, September 21. /TASS/. Russian cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitry Petelin plan to play football with NASA astronaut Francisco Rubio aboard the International Space Station (ISS), Prokopyev said during an online news conference at TASS on Tuesday.

"It just so happened that our crew - all the three of us - are playing football," Prokopyev said. "I think we will have a chance to repeat something of this kind aboard the ISS. I have already played football at the station in 2018, with my colleagues Oleg Artemyev and Alexander Gerst. I think we will be able to find some sort of a ball there."

"Anyway, we have already played tennis, badminton and other sports that are favorite and traditional for our cosmonauts. So, one can certainly do sport in space with pleasure," the cosmonaut added.

New Crew Launching to Station Live on NASA TV

Mark Garcia Posted on September 21, 2022

NASA TV coverage now is underway for the launch of a crewed Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station with NASA astronaut Frank Rubio and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin. The Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft will launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan at 9:54 a.m. EDT (6:54 p.m. Baikonur time). Launch and docking activities will air live on NASA Television’s Public Channel, the NASA app, and the agency’s website.

After a two-orbit, three-hour journey, the Soyuz will dock to the space station’s Rassvet module at 1:11 p.m. About two hours after docking, hatches between the Soyuz and the station will open and the crew members will greet each other.

Once aboard station, the trio will join Expedition 67 Commander Oleg Artemyev, cosmonauts Denis Matveev and Sergey Korsakov of Roscosmos, as well as NASA astronauts Bob Hines, Kjell Lindgren, and Jessica Watkins, and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.

Rubio, Prokopyev, and Petelin will spend six months aboard the orbital laboratory. This will be Prokopyev’s second flight into space and the first for Rubio and Petelin.

While NASA is airing coverage of the launch, rendezvous, docking, and hatch opening of the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft on NASA’s Television’s Public Channel, a concurrent Artemis I cryogenic demonstration test at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida will air only on the Media Channel. During all other times, the test will air on both the Public and Media Channels.

Soyuz-22 mission coverage is as follows (all times Eastern):

Wednesday, Sept. 21

9 a.m. – Coverage begins on NASA TV’s Public Channel for 9:54 a.m. launch.

12:15 p.m. – Coverage begins on NASA TV’s Public Channel for 1:11 p.m. docking.

3:30 p.m. – Coverage begins on NASA TV for hatch opening and welcome remarks.

Third TASS special correspondent on ISS starts his work.

Now Dmitry Petelin will receive instructions from his colleague Oleg Artemyev, who heads the agency's office at the station.

21 SEP, 15:40

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION, September 22. /TASS/. The third TASS special correspondent on the ISS, Roscosmos cosmonaut Dmitry Petelin, began work aboard the station on Wednesday. He arrived at the ISS in the Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft, along with cosmonaut Sergey Prokopyev and American astronaut Francisco Rubio.

Now Petelin will receive instructions from his colleague Oleg Artemyev, who heads the agency's office at the station. TASS space mascot Inotasya was also brought aboard the ship to the ISS.

During the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) TASS Director General Sergey Mikhailov gave Petelin, through Roscosmos CEO Yury Borisov, the TASS space mascot (Inotasya), a TASS special correspondent certificate, as well as a branded set of clothes and chevrons with the inscription ‘TASS on the ISS’.

Last November TASS and Roscosmos signed a memorandum of cooperation, according to which the news agency opened an office onboard the ISS. Cosmonaut Alexander Misurkin was the first special correspondent on the ISS. He was succeeded by Oleg Artemyev in March 2022. The correspondents tell about life and work on the station, various experiments and tests, send photos and videos from the ISS.

TASS and Roskosmos have been cooperating for many years and a number of special projects about space, exhibitions and other joint events have been produced within its framework. In August they agreed that TASS will provide its media bank — tassphoto.com — to distribute Roscosmos’ photo and video content.
