Energomash announced the shipment of two RD 171 engines to Yuzhmash - #162 for the Federal program and #163 for Sea Launch.  Can anyone track these to the vehicle serials?

It says RD171M which is the enhanced version

What does the RD171M give you?

The 5% increase is merely a reference to the engine being tested successfully at 105% of nominal thrust. The big improvement for the RD-171M is that it has a mass of a few hundred kg less than the standard variant, and also a .5 second enhancement in ISP.

And shares 70% of the RD-180 parts. The RD-170/1 to RD-180 was a lot different. They even used different injectors. So the RD-171M is an implementation of the RD-180 in an RD-171. Originally, it was the RD-173 project, which was supposed to have an extra 5% thrust. Since the only use was the Zenit, they went for the same thrust at less weight, in the RD-171M.

Maybe I am the last on this forum to discover this fact : on july 27th, 1991, there was a launch attempt of a Zenit-2 launch vehicle. This flight would have been the Return To Flight of the Zenit after the october 1990 dramatic failure.

But it was cancelled and the rocket returned to Dnepropetrovsk...

Does the zenit second stage really have 2 different engines?

Rd-120 and RD-8 ?

If yes, How are they located physically?

RD-120 is about 10 times bigger than RD-8?

Jeff Foust just tweeted from Satellite 2012 conference:

Sea Launch planning upgrades to the Zenit-3SL that will increase capacity to 6400 kg and then 6700 kg to GTO. #satellite2012

Any info on how do they plan to do that? Does that involve the Fregat-SB, for example?

Is there any information available for the payload accommodation on the Zenit-2 upper stage prior to the advent of Sealaunch? I seem to remember seeing a truss structure diagram at one point, but I cannot recall where.

Energia is planning to complete the transition to the "03" variant of the Blok-DM, which includes a less powerful, but more efficient main engine - RD-58MF - larger prop tanks, and possibly a return to use of sintin propellant.

The "03" version was flown once, but the larger prop tanks were overfilled, and the flight ended up in the Pacific, as a result.

use of sintin propellant

Wonder if they would reintroduce Sintin with the Soyuz as well. Should be interesting. I couldn't quite find how large of an improvement it would bring

I've seen that Energomash has been presenting lots of papers on synthetic additives to RG-1. Among other things, it would lower the pressure losses on the cooling side of things. So I wouldn't discard sintin, but may be they are thinking of some new additives. Plus, the RD-171M could be pushed to 105% easily. But the Zenit already has a lot of T/W and is very long for it's width. So I guess we should wait and see.

It completely depends on which stage is going to fly with sintin.

surprised they are even messing with  the Zenit.   It works fine, why mess with a good thing?

Thought the new line was going to be from the Soyuz?

Because the heavy satellites that Sea Launch caters are moving towards 6.5tonnes. And the Proton-M has already been uprated to 6.35tonnes, and moving towards 6.5. So they have to keep competitive or loose prospects.
