First event lined up for today is due to start in about 40 min.
It is the PAO event with an elementary school in Tucson, Arizona, the city that Mark Kelly's wife was shot.

Not sure what these kids are doing in school at 7:45pm local time lol

One of the kids (a nine year old girl) that went to this school was killed in the attack on Mark Kelly's wife.

Mark answered a student's question about how he brushed his teeth in space.  Same as on earth except no faucet with running water.

Now talking about what inspired him to be an astronaut - the Apollo missions.  Mentioned Christina Green (the late student) as well.

Another question about space junk - he says we don't see space junk because it's so small compared to the rest of the universe.  They feel pretty safe.

Another student asking about what happens if you get sick in space.  No doctors on board but there is a first aid kit and they can talk to doctors on ground.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Offline Bubbinski

Student question about who decides who gets to go into space.  Dr. Peggy Whitson is the one who decides.

Another question about has he ever seen anything strange in space.  Michael Fincke's been up for over a year in space but hasn't really seen anything "strange" like a UFO, but keeps his eyes open.

Question about what do you hope to learn on this mission.  Mark talking about AMS.  Has collected data on 50 million particles.  What's the make up of the universe?  That's what they hope to answer.

Edit: some scenes of the shuttle and station are being shown intermittently.  I can't do screenshots right now.

Student question about pollution - neat thing about ISS is you can see what's going on on earth.

Another question about how do I become an astronaut.  Pay attention in class, do homework, work hard, go to best university you can.  Listen to teachers.

"Can you see or study a black hole from the space station".  Michael Fincke fielded that one.  Can't see black holes directly but AMS can detect particles.

Michael said "thank goodness we can't see a black hole because we'd be too close and in trouble" or something to that effect.

Q&A now concluded.  Capcom calling crew now about KU coverage.

I have to go now and get ready for bed (work night) but I've enjoyed seeing this.  Wish I could capture the screenshots.

Bear with me this was my first attempt at transcribing
Pretty basic questions as you would expect from an elementary school event

Q&A:
How long does it take to get into space after blast off?
0-17,500 mph in 8min and 50 seconds

What is the most exciting or interesting thing you have ever seen in space?
Talks about how beautiful the Earth is

Do you need military training to go into space?
Talks about them two being in marine and air force. Crew is split with and without military. Not needed to be an astronaut

Why do you have to where the whole space suit and not just helmet?
No air in space. Pressure is put on whole body and will explode without suit

Who decides the destination of the space shuttle and where has it been?
Designed to bring satellites and payloads into orbit. Currently at ISS. Has been to Hubble and other satellites

How to you stay in one place without floating away?
It is very tricky. Use toes and feet. Have handrails

How fast does the Space Shuttle go?
Going 17,500 mph around the earth. Sunset and sunrise every 35 min. Doesn't feel like sticking your arm out a window because of the lack of air

What is the longest amount of time you have been up in space?
Mike: About a year for me, mission has been about a week so far

Does the food taste good in space?
Got some M&ms that taste good. The rest not so good lol

How do you brush your teeth in space?
One of the few things done like on earth except no water and spit into a napkin. Encourages them to brush their teeth

Rest of event with audio only

What inspired you to become an astronaut?
Talks about Apollo astronauts walking on the moon when he was their age and wanting to be like them and knew he had to work hard. Names a couple: Armstrong, Young

Do you see old things floating around in space like space junk?
Talks about being in a really low orbit and things going way faster above them and how small they are. Says the people can track things when they come close to them.

What happens if you become sick or injured while up in space?
Medical kit aboard and some are prepared in small medical tasks and can talk to doctors on the ground whenever they need to

What does it feel like in your seat during blast off and landing compared to an airplane?
Laying on your back with a space suit and the rockets explode and you have a lot of things you have to do. Talks about it being very exciting

Who decides who gets to go into space?
Talks about the chief astronaut and the people above her are the people who decide

Have you ever seen anything strange in space?
Mike says he hasn't in his year in space and that no one has seen a UFO or anything but are keeping their eyes open

What do you hope to learn on this mission?
Talks about the 2 million dollar AMS installed a couple days ago and talks about what it does. And trying to find about what the universe is made of

Can you tell which country or continent has the most pollution from space?
Talks about how helpful the ISS and space shuttle as well as satellites have been to find ways of making the world better

How can I be an astronaut?
Pay attention in school and try really hard and try to go to a good university and listen to your teachers

Can you see or study a black hole from the space station?
Can't see them directly. Instruments such as the AMS can detect particles that would have to do with them. Years ago before the space shuttle people didn't believe black holes existed

Q&A complete
Waiting for KU to return in 2 min so they can show them something
