NASA to Air Briefing, Spacewalks to Install New Station Solar Arrays

Expedition 65 astronauts will conduct two spacewalks – one Wednesday, June 16, and the other Sunday, June 20 – to install new solar arrays to help power the International Space Station. NASA will discuss the upcoming spacewalks during a news conference at 2 p.m. EDT Monday, June 14. Live coverage of the news conference and spacewalks will air on NASA Television, the agency’s website, and the NASA app.

NASA flight engineer Shane Kimbrough and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet will conduct both spacewalks, which will be the 239th and 240th in support of station assembly, maintenance, and upgrades.

Reporters who wish to participate in the news conference at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston by telephone must call the Johnson newsroom at: 281-483-5111 no later than 4 p.m. Friday, June 11. Due to safety restrictions related to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, reporters will not be invited to attend briefings on-site at NASA centers. Those following the briefing on social media may ask questions using #AskNASA.

Live coverage of the spacewalks will begin at 6:30 a.m. EDT on the day of each spacewalk, with the crew members scheduled to exit the station’s Quest airlock around 8 a.m. Each spacewalk will last approximately 6 hours, 30 minutes.

On Wednesday, June 16, Kimbrough and Pesquet will exit the space station to install the first two of six ISS Roll-Out Solar Arrays (iROSAs) to ultimately upgrade six of the station’s eight power channels. They will install the first array on the far end of the left (port) side of the station’s backbone truss structure (P6) to upgrade the 2B power channel. On Sunday, June 20, the duo will install the second solar array to upgrade the 4B power channel on the P6 truss.

The solar arrays arrived at the station in the SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft as part of the company’s 22nd commercial resupply services mission to the station. Operators in the Mission Control Center at Johnson are scheduled to use the station's robotic Canadarm2 to extract the solar arrays from Dragon's trunk Thursday, June 10, in advance of installation during the spacewalks.

For both spacewalks, Pesquet will be extravehicular crew member 1 (EV 1), with red stripes on his spacesuit, while Kimbrough will be extravehicular crew member 2 (EV 2), with an unmarked suit. Canadarm2 will be used to maneuver the arrays into place, commanded from inside the station by NASA astronaut Megan McArthur with NASA astronaut Mark Vande Hei serving as backup.

The spacewalks will be the seventh and eighth for Kimbrough, and the third and fourth for Pesquet. These will also be the third and fourth spacewalks Kimbrough and Pesquet will conduct together, following two Expedition 50 spacewalks in January and March 2017. During the 2017 spacewalks, they continued replacing nickel-hydrogen batteries with new lithium-ion batteries on the P4 truss, lubricated the Canadarm2 Latching End Effector, and conducted external work to prepare for installation of International Docking Adapter-3.

The current solar arrays are functioning well but have begun to show signs of degradation, as expected, since they were designed for a 15-year service life. The first pair of the space station’s original solar arrays were deployed in December 2000 and have been powering the station for more than 20 years. The new solar arrays will be positioned in front of six of the current arrays, increasing the station’s total available power from 160 kilowatts to a maximum of 215 kilowatts. The same solar array design will be used to power elements of the agency’s Gateway lunar outpost.

In November 2020, the International Space Station surpassed its 20-year milestone of continuous human presence, providing opportunities for unique research and technological demonstrations that help prepare for long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars and also improve life on Earth. In that time, 244 people from 19 countries have visited the orbiting laboratory that has hosted nearly 3,000 research investigations from researchers in 108 countries and areas.

Aboard the International Space Station, Expedition 65 Flight Engineer Shane Kimbrough of NASA discussed a pair of spacewalks he and crewmate Thomas Pesquet of ESA (European Space Agency) are scheduled to make June 16 and 20 to begin the installation of new ISS roll-up solar arrays (IROSAs) that will augment the power supply of the orbital outpost for the remainder of its lifetime. The first array of this initial pair of power generators, launched on the SpaceX Cargo Dragon flight two weeks ago, will be installed on the first of two spacewalks by Kimbrough and Pesquet on the far port truss of the station (P6 truss) to upgrade the power output for the station’s 2B power channel. A second spacewalk by Kimbrough and Pesquet will install the second roll-up array on the P6 truss for the 4B power channel. Four more arrays will be installed next year to complete the upgrades

Spacewalk activities continue after Shane Kimbrough troubleshoots spacesuit

About three hours into today’s spacewalk, NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough made his way back to the Quest airlock at the International Space Station to reconnect his spacesuit to an umbilical connection and restarted it. The reset corrected the issues with his spacesuit’s display and controls module that provides him information about the status of his spacesuit.

In addition, after seeing a spike in the reading for pressure in his sublimator, which provides cooling for his spacesuit, flight controllers had Kimbrough cycle the sublimator. The data stabilized.

Kimbrough is safe and has now made his way back to the worksite where the new solar arrays remain in the flight support equipment.

Meanwhile, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet remained in the foot restraint attached to the end of the station’s robotic Canadarm2 in preparation to continue the work to release the new ISS Roll-Out Solar Array (iROSA) from the flight support equipment.

The spacewalking duo is preparing to install the iROSA in front of the current solar arrays on the station’s left (port) side, known as P6, to upgrade the 2B power channel and will resume working through the next steps on today’s timeline.

Spacewalk to Install First New Solar Array Concluded

NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet concluded their spacewalk at 3:26 p.m. EDT, after 7 hours and 15 minutes. In the seventh spacewalk of the year outside the International Space Station, the two astronauts installed a new ISS Roll-Out Solar Array (iROSA) into its mounting bracket on the far end of the left (port) side of the station’s backbone truss structure (P6).

Kimbrough and Pesquet successfully removed the array from its position in the flight support equipment and maneuvered it into position on the mast canister at the 2B power channel.

Before the new array can be deployed and begin providing power to the orbiting laboratory, spacewalkers will need to install the electrical cables and drive the final two bolts to enable the solar array to unfurl its fully deployed position. Pesquet and Kimbrough are scheduled for another spacewalk coming up on Sunday, June 20 to continue the installation of new solar arrays.

NASA is augmenting six of the eight existing power channels of the space station with new solar arrays to ensure a sufficient power supply is maintained for NASA’s exploration technology demonstrations for Artemis and beyond as well as utilization and commercialization.

This was the seventh spacewalk for Kimbrough, the third for Pesquet, and the third they conducted together. Kimbrough has now spent a total of 46 hours and 15 minutes spacewalking, and Pesquet’s total spacewalking time is 19 hours and 47 minutes.

Space station crew members have conducted 239 spacewalks in support of assembly and maintenance of the orbiting laboratory. Spacewalkers have now spent a total of 62 days, 18 hours, and 28 minutes working outside the station.

In November 2020, the International Space Station surpassed its 20-year milestone of continuous human presence, providing opportunities for unique research and technological demonstrations that help prepare for long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars and also improve life on Earth. In that time, 244 people from 19 countries have visited the orbiting laboratory that has hosted nearly 3,000 research investigations from researchers in 108 countries and areas.

While researching the "SUBLM P" message, I was reminded that Shane (and Megan) were working EVA 23 as ground crew which provides context to Shane's understandable radio questions about the sublimator issue.

The obstruction causing problems with opening up the arrays unfortunately reminds me of the grommet stopping the TPAD grappling Solar Max on 4-1C and the previously un-identified bracket stopping the A Frames being attached to Westar and Palapa on 51-A.

The far set of new arrays appear to be attached to a large white structure on Node 2.
There appear to be the wrong number of new arrays.
There appears to be another module and node (with dragon attached) added as well?
