Launch viewing tickets go on sale Wednesday, January 6th at 9:00 am ET.  They have made changes to the online purchase process.  See the following website for more details: http://www.kennedyspacecenter.com/space-shuttle-launch-viewing-tickets.aspx

Launch viewing tickets go on sale Wednesday,

"guests will be randomly selected to proceed to the ticket selection page. Entry into the waiting room does not guarantee you NASA Causeway tickets"...Man do I hate this but I certainly understand it. Looks like the Dine with the Astronaut sales lag is nullified with the new queuing process. Thanks for the heads up!

Hi Everyone,

As luck would have it, I found out that I have four congressional guest tickets to the STS-130 launch.  I am bringing some friends and family to the launch, and as a backup plan, purchased four LTT tickets this morning.  I found out about the others literally minutes later.

So, I now have four LTT tickets for grabs if any NSF members would like them.  Preference goes to members who are seeing their first launch.  I would like to move all four together, because I only have one LDA placard to send with the LTTs.

Please drop me a PM if you're interested.

I made it through the virtual waiting room, was in the process of buying 2 Causeway tickets, and got BOOTED OUT OF THE SYSTEM!!!!! >:-(

By the time I got back in, there were only Visitor Center viewing tickets left. I couldn't see paying $80 for 2 tickets where you can't even see the pad.

I miss the old ordering system.  In the past I've tried to get tickets and was successful every time.  How I miss dinner with an astronaut ticket packages.  At least they haven't instituted a lottery system yet.  I dislike those even more than a waiting room.

I didn't even bother with the new system, website was so slow to load when trying to get on this morning it wasn't even funny and personally wish they'd go back to the old way of doing things. Ah well, I'll still be down there :)

GO ENDEAVOUR!

Isn't the new system effectively a lottery?  More people are in the waiting room than can get tickets, and they're selected randomly...

Didn't try the website but I was able to get causeway tickets through my congressman.  This will be my first trip down to see a launch and was wondering how best to plan for liftoff delays?

To be safe plan to stay from say the 6th to the 14th... and hope if there is a bump its only a day or two.

That's true.  Though the waiting room way lets you feel like you have more of a chance than if they picked your name from a hat (even if that chance is all in your head).  Seeing the refresh timer count down, page reloading, etc.

Can anyone who wound up with Congressional tickets to STS-129 in November or STS-125 in May tell me: were they Causeway tickets, or did you wind up at Banana Creek?

It looks as though at least a few Congressional ticket holders at STS-119, STS-127 and STS-128 eventually made it to Banana Creek -- but they had so many scrubs, I figure they're aberrations in terms of standard procedure. I'm curious as to what a more crowded launch experience -- one with fewer postponements -- was like.

Historically there seems to be lots of chatter in the "Viewing (Going to launch, etc.)" threads from people with Congressional tickets in the lead up to the day of a launch, but no real follow ups from people on site or afterwards to say where they finally ended up.

(I've managed to acquire a pair of Congressional tickets, but I don't know if I'll have any idea which location I'll be going to prior to seeing which way the bus turns out of the parking lot that night.)

Thanks!

Hi Spacedog71,

I attended the launch of STS-128 in August from the Banana Creek VIP site.  I got my passes after putting a request in through my Senator's office.  I was bused to Banana Creek for each attempt including the first attempt where weather resulted in a scrub.

I was told by the NASA point of contact that the site one is selected to attend (Banana Creek or Causeway) is not selected until just a couple of days before launch and depends on both the person attendings affiliation and the availability of space at the site.  I also included that I would like to attend Banana Creek in my initial request which I made several months prior to launch.  I hope this helps!

Hi there,
I am planning to watch this launch (my first). I purchased causeway tickets for myself and 3 friends.
My friend and his wife are now saying they may not be able to go. I will only receive one placard, so if I wanted to sell these 2 extra tickets to somebody how would they get inside? Can I request an additional placard?  Can they arrive before they are required, or is there another transportation method available?

Sorry if this is off-topic or in the wrong section.

Thanks!

I've wondered this myself.  In theory, I think the buyer can purchase a single visitor center launch ticket, which will come with its own placard.  The causeway buses board from the visitor center, so once you get there, it shouldn't be a problem.

For STS-119, I found it was possible to get onto KSC before they started checking passes, but that was an evening launch, and KSC was operating as usual in the morning.  For STS-130, that may not work.

In any case, it's probably worth trying to request an additional placard before going to plan B.

The Visitor center launch tickets are sold out, according to the KSC web site.

KSCVC tries to make it sound like there's no getting anywhere near it on launch day without the right paperwork, but it's not like they've got a toll booth.

It would surprise me greatly if you couldn't just drive up to the box office on the afternoon of the 6th and ask for a parking placard to be used later that evening.

You have obviously never been to KSC on launch day, or when launch preps are in work.  Security is tight from the time the crew arrives until her and her crew are in space.  They've got multiple sources of police enforcement (SWAT, KSC/CCAFS Police, etc) that are standing guard at all entrances on launch day.  If you don't have the paperwork, you won't be getting into the KSCVC on launch day.

Not toll booths, more like security booths with guards who are on occasion carrying assault rifles to supplement their sidearm.

Gator Tours dropped me off in the parking lot of an Orlando hotel at about four-thirty in the morning of August 25th, 2009, after STS-128's weather-related scrub a few hours earlier, with nothing but a blue KSCVC two-day ticket and an 800 number to call if I wanted to purchase a $35 ride back to the Visitor Center the next day to watch the rescheduled launch from the KSCVC grounds.

Instead, twelve hours later, I drove my rental car straight through the gates of the KSCVC, parked, walked up to the box office, bought an orange Launch Transportation Ticket for $20, and only then did I obtain a parking placard to place on my dashboard.

So maybe we're defining "launch day" differently, here. But at approximately 4:30 pm on August 26th, or less than eight hours before the rescheduled launch of STS-128, I most definitely had no paperwork and I most definitely did get into the KSCVC. Or at least as far as the box office, which is all I was suggesting in the first place.

There was no SWAT team. There were no KSC/CCAFS Police. There were no sidearms, or assault rifles, or helicopters. There weren't even parking attendants. I was completely unchallenged, the whole way in. Oh, I passed by all of the unmanned locations where there would eventually be guards. But they hadn't shown up yet.

Now, I don't doubt that I probably couldn't have gotten away with that a few hours later (pretending for the moment that they didn't call a valve-related scrub 90 minutes after I arrived on site). When I drove back in for the subsequent reschedule around dusk on Friday, August 28th (say, 8:00 pm or so, around four hours before the launch), they had indeed established a perimeter and I did indeed have to slow down once or twice to get waved through checkpoints.

There were also checkpoints in full effect when I arrived for STS-129 at around 7:30 am on November 16th, or about seven hours before that launch. So I may not have missed the establishment of the checkpoints on August 26th by very much.

Given today's developments this may be all theoretical anyway. And they may have gone full TSA in the meantime, this being 2010 and all. I would fully expect your mileage to vary. But if my experience in August was any indication, it would surprise me greatly if you couldn't just drive up to the box office on the afternoon of the 6th and ask for a parking placard to be used later that evening.

I'd second the comments above regarding parking placard.. On launches that are early in morning 2-3am (128 early attempts late Aug) the kscvc never really closes they don't kick you out like they would on a normal day. Just arrive before the gate security starts. I wish I could remember how far in advance it was several hours maybe 4 hours or so..  And the guest services people would give the placard for dash of your car while in parking lot. They said they'd tow (on this launch after 11pm) so it's worth getting something from them the day before. For a 430am launch they'll have placard times getting you there no later than around 2ish with many arrival times probably starting 11pm or so..I doubt kscvc will close at all on the 6th.

good question , for the delayed 127 & 128 we were always scheduled for Banana Creek  on 127 about 2 weeks before they confirmed BC on 128 nasa causeway was never an option I believe rep said budget for remainder of year only had BC (I took that as meaning smaller # of tickets available fewer buses to rent, etc they don't use KSC VC buses) merritt square mall near sears was pickup point

has anyone been able to view a launch from the area of haulover canal? if you google map Allenhurst, FLA, a ghost town now part of National Seashore is located at the haulover canal along with a linked video shot from it appears this area for sts-119. I know the park personnel close the max brewer causeway on east side, but how about the approach from the north down highway 3 to haulover. When I called Canaveral Seashore, woman said all of highway 3 is closed. But she had to check with someone and I don't really have confidence in her answer, especially based on this video . it's a well done video by the way.

The security checkpoint is setup just beyond the Haulover Canal bridge, at least it was for STS-129, so I assume it's the same for all flights. Coming from the North you should be able to go as far as that bridge.

I've been thinking about that. Might be breakfast somewhere instead of dinner. I just don't think dinner will work given a 4:39a.m. launch time. more will be posted later this evening.

OK. It's that magically time of year again when Space Shuttle season is in bloom. Okay. Okay. Corny, I know.

FOR ALL NSF members who are traveling to Florida to witness the launch of Space Shuttle Endeavour on February 7, I will be putting together a dinner for all NSF members who would like to meet up with one another for dinner while in Titusville.

Since STS-130 is an early morning launch, what I have decided (with the help of Larry Sullivan) is that it would be best to meet for DINNER on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6 at 8p.m. This is the EVENING BEFORE liftoff. The reason I am choosing this date and time is mainly for Larry Sullivan and I who will be covering the liftoff from the KSC Press Site for NSF and Jacques who will be covering the launch from the KSC Press Site for a European company. We will eat at 8p.m. so that Larry, Jacques, and I can leave at 10p.m. to make it to work at a reasonable time before liftoff.

So, any NSF member (and guest(s) you are bringing) who is interested in meeting up for dinner at Dixie Crossroads in Titusville on Saturday, February 6 a 8p.m. please send me a PM with your name and cell phone number at which I can reach you while you are in town.

I look forward to meeting some of you! To all who are traveling over, up, down, or sideways for this launch, I wish you all safe travels.

GO Endeavour, STS-130, Node-3, and Cupola.

I have always been a fan of th shuttle, and ejoy wathcing it go up on TV, but Im sure nothing is like veiwing live. I plan on going to the July launch as part of a family vacation, and have made plans in case of a scrub for a few days anyways. I know theres plenty for us to do. So my question is, when you contacted your Congressmen for tickets, what excatly did you say, and how did you contact them, email, written letter, phone call? Also how far in advance are these obtainable? Thanks!

Brand new here so bear with me if this is wrong place to ask, but I did not see where to start a new post. I have question on times for the Feb 7th launch. My car placard says arrive at KSC no later then 1130 pm. then my tickets say use them no earlier then 230 am. This 3 hour window. Do we sit in our car in the parking lot or what? Thank you to anyone who can tell me about it.

This is also a first for me, I believe you can wait at the KSVC and the time on your ticket is when you can board the bus to the causeway, assuming that is causeway tickets you have.

I have another question, since you apparently have received your tickets KSVC has started shipping them. I live in Sweden so I am a bit anxious about receiving them before I leave (probably on the 5th).
I am told that they will be handled by Fedex International and they will email me a tracking number (so far no email has arrrived).
Does anyone know when they usually ship and when I really should start worrying and call KSVC? Thanks in advance

Regards and looking forward to the launch/ Mats

I agree, when I looked at my STS-130 KSCVC tickets yesterday I was also confused. But my tickets say 'no earlier than 2:30' (not am or pm) so I'm guessing it means 2:30 pm on Saturday the 6th (2:30 am on the 7th would be impossible to get everyone through security before the 4:39 launch but then again why didn't they write 14:30?). I don't know if that means KSCVC will close early for regular admission on the 6th and then reopen at 2:30 pm for the STS-130 launch or what. Guess we'll find out on the 6th. I think the main thing is to be there before the time on the placard.

I went to see STS128 which had a couple of delays. No one even looked at the times on our tickets and my wife and I turned up hours early and took our time looking at the displays, eating, sitting on the grass and relaxing each time. We had enjoyable days each time.

While there is not really a 'bad view' on the causeway because it slopes down to the water almost like stadium seating, if you want to be right in front (like me) make sure you line up early. There will be plenty of like minded folk there so plenty of people to talk with.

(One note here, do not go too far east on the causeway because most of the shuttle is blocked from some parts by a small island.)

Most importantly, relax, go with the flow, and enjoy the occasion. It one of the most spectacular things you will ever see!

JEFF2SPACE, not going to causeway. they were already gone;. But i did not think that 230 would mean 230 pm , because I assume everything with NASA would be military time and that would be 1430. I am going to go back through some of the other missions as someone suggested and look for the answer and will post back if I find anything. I CANT WAIT!!!
And to the person in sweden,I got mine today by fed ex, so your may be on way, but I never got a tracking number nor was told. That may be for out of country.

I'm not going to causeway either and you're right, I would think they would use military time but 2:30 am doesn't make sense to me if placard says 11:30 pm.  I emailed KSCVC and will post if I receive a reply.

Edit: KSCVC replied to my email with the following:
"You would go by the arrival time on the vehicle placard.  The visitor complex will be open from 9:30 PM on Feb. 6th until 5:30 pm on Feb. 7th."

Looks like the stars have finally aligned for me and I will finally get to see and shoot a shuttle launch from the causeway thanks to a friend who works at NASA. I will be down the whole week shooting the races at Daytona, so I have some padding if the launch were to be scrubbed. I can barely remember the last time I saw a shuttle launch, cant wait!

I would say Space View Park or anywhere along US 1 in Titusville. Obviously it can get pretty crowded so find your spot as early as you can.

I second Spaceveiw park in Titusville. That is where I was in July for the shuttle launch that did not happen for us. If I had not gotten the visitor center, was going to go back to that. Actually after I got the tickets I questioned if I had done the right t hing because at the visitor center I'm closer but will not get to see the plume and the whole WOW factor, as I like to call it. Someone on another forum told me to stay with the VC site, though, as I will see it after it clears the tress and it will be close.Once in a lifetime thing, so can't wait.

I got to KSC on the August 28th launch of STS-128 at 7 pm and it was crowded then.
Space View Park seems good, I tried to go there but as I said it was quite crowded.

I'll be in Daytona the night of the launch.  Having never seen a launch of any type before, what will I be able to see of a shuttle launch from Daytona?  I won't have a car so driving to KSC isn't an option for me...  Oh, well, that's the life of a US Air Force member sometimes

Look on you tube for peoples videos.I remember seeing a couple that were from the beach that someone took of a launch and it was during the daytime, so would assume night should be brighter if not cloudy. I am going to KSC, but did a lot of looking before and saw lots of videos. I am thinking that the answer will be yes you will see something.

Definitely should see it from there.  I know people who watch it from about the same distance south and they can see both daytime and nighttime launches quite well, however to the north you're more along the path of the shuttle.  Should be a good view.

Today I got the LTT tickets and vehicle placard, it says arrival time 10.30.
But OTOH , on the STS 130 admission ticket it says:
"Please do not arrive at the KSVC prior to the time listed on your vehicle placard".
Anyway, now that the tickets are in my hand I'm going to book flights and hotel - I am counting that a weeks margin in case of delays should give me a reasonable chance to see the launch. I am aware that there are no guarantees, better safe than sorry.

Fura, Hi, I had posted on here also about the time question and another member emailed KSC and will post back if he hears from them. I am like you but my times are a little different. My car placard says do not arrive at KSC AFTER 1130 pm. Then my tickets(i am just at visitor center)say do not arrive BEFORE time listed below, which is 230.I am confused about this , as it makes it look like i have to wait in parking lot or car for 3 hours before to go through gate, and I am sure security will be  long.If you have gotten any information, let me know please or anyone else reading this .Thanks,

Hi, let me attempt to clear up some of these things, I go down there for every launch and have causeway or congressional tickets each time and have never had a problem.
1. Causeway vs. Banana River congressional tickets-- another poster has this correct--it depends where NASA wants to put you, either the causeway or the VIP section, but it is decided at the last minute.  How you request your congressional tickets doesn't appear to make any difference.  If the causeway is the destination, the difference in having the congressional tickets is you will be far westward on the causeway where there are bleachers, souvenir stand, and the countdown clock.  The regular causeway ticket holders are driven a bit further eastward.  The view is not too noticeably different either way but stay as westward as possible as there are islands out there that do block the view--not completely--but the bottom of the pad at least.

2.  Placard arrival times--if you go in off Rt 1 from Titusville and over that long bridge across the river--the Kennedy Space Center will be on your right.  You just turn right and enter the park.  Depending when you arrive, there may be employees directing you where to park but they do not stop you to scan the placard.  If you enter this way, the time on your placard does not matter, I really think it is traffic control so as to avoid everyone arriving at the last minute in a clump.  You want to arrive early, but that time on the placard is very early and not necessary.  Where the placard does come into play, however, is if you are arriving via Merritt Island or anywhere that direction--that is more the back way to KSC and there IS a security gate there to go through.  You will need the placard, and they may be picky about the time.  So, if you want to arrive later, don't go via that way.

3.  Placard vs. ticket times--Again, the placard time is very early.  The only ticket time you need to be concerned with is if you have the Dine with an Astronaut tickets which will have the time of the dinner/breakfast on them.  If you want a good table to sit at to hear the astronaut, show up early, a line does form.  Otherwise, if you just have launch tickets, you can show up whenever you want, the ticket will be taken by a person directing you in a line to board the bus, he/she does not look at the time.  In fact, this last launch, she marked on the ticket with a marker and we kept the ticket.  The only time you need to be concerned about is when the buses board for the causeway--and then you will want to plan for how early you want to be in line for those buses.  The line for the buses forms early and people are quite pushy vying for that space in line--plan accordingly.  Another tip--if you want to be in the front portion of that line, if you go up to ask the attendant when the bus boards--be there well in advance of whatever time he/she gives you.  The buses ALWAYS board earlier than they tell you.

Because this is a night launch, probably stick to arriving earlier than later as the park will not be regularly open but again, those ticket times are not something to cause alarm.  I hope some of this helps.   :)

Thank you so much, Swee. That was very helpful. I am just going to visitor center so no bus to board. I was going to come the back way as I will be in cocoa, but thought it went straight to the road that I have to turn on and then enter the gates with everyone else. Are you saying there is a gate back there that I could take, as long as I am there by the time stated? That would be wonderful.NW

You are very welcome  :)   Yes, from Cocoa you'd most be taking Rt 3 which is through the wildlife refuge, there will be a security gate in the middle of nowhere.  If you take Rt 1 to 405 in, which may be out of the way for you, there is no security gate at all, the first gate is just past KSC which you can't enter anyway.

You can avoid the security gate (Gate 2) on State Road 3 if you turn left on Space Commerce Way (see back of placard) which is just before security gate.  This takes you around to SR 405/NASA Causeway where you turn right and entrance is short distance on right.

My wife and I will be first time congressional ticket viewers.  Are there any concessions at the viewing site for those tickets?

It is my understanding that the ticket package will arrive about a week ahead of launch or is this a total on-line thing where we print everything from an email?

A phone call to the number provided at NASA HQ only yielded an unanswering recorded message.

Thanks in advance for any response.

the 2 times I have gone "congressional" I was at the Banana Creek VIP site . You will have access to the Apollo/Saturn V museum, everyting is open food, restrooms even the shows/displays within the complex were up and running. this was for 126/127 . Also you can send keepsake envelops with mission profile/ facts for $1 a piece that will get a KSC cancellation on the stamp via usps.  They will sell you stamps if you don't bring any, just remember to have addresses of those you want to send 'em to.
For congressional tickets, expect a mailing that will have some info. Normally they meet at the Sears at Merritt Island Mall south of ksc about 3 hours or so prior to launch. Bus you nonstop to Apollo. for one of the scrub attempts they had us meet at visitor center, but that attempt was scrubbed also well ahead of time. Guess it sort of depends number of invites and timing. Will be interesting to see for this early morning launch which I plan on attending somewhere.

They sell them every flight in the visitor center gift shop, though they sometimes sell out very quickly it seems.  If you are around until after landing you can get the envelope canceled with the landing date also.  Attaching a pic of the STS-129 launch canceled envelope as an example.  They will have a writeup in the envelope about the mission, crew and patch too.

The one time I got a ticket through my senator's office, for STS-117, it was for the causeway. I am a little surprised to hear others have gotten to the Banana River site with a congressional pass so it makes me wonder if I got on the wrong bus that time. ;) But I can hardly complain. The causeway experience is great too.

I look forward to being there for 130. I plan to stay until Feb. 10 so I can see the SDO launch on the 9th. Any advice on what is the best place to watch that from?

There is a chance they will run the Visitors center tour busses direct to the Saturn V center on launch  day. That would be the best viewing, but the busses normally do not start until 10:00 AM which would be cutting it close time wise. There is also a good view from the VC parking lot but you can not see the pad from there.

Playalinda beach is good too, but lately they have been closing it for Atlas launches. Call the National Seashore office (321-267-1110) several days before and they can tell you if it will be open.

Another spot with a good view is Space View Park in Titusville or Rt 406 east of the Max Brewer bridge if the Beach road is closed.

From VC people line up about half hour before the earliest time they list which is a good 3 hours or so prior to launch 2hours prior is pretty much the last bus give or take. For the May 09 launch of sts125 the line extended snaked around rocket garden but did move steadily. and had you waited inside you would still get there in time but earlier buses park further west which for nasa causeway gets you slightly closer.

I assume it was just more or less like a shooting star from here. Does anyone know if we would be able to see it this time, assuming cloauds arent a factor? Getting up earlyto watch it on NasaTV, thought it might be cool if I could see it outside.

===

STS 130 (Endeavour) is currently scheduled to launch from the Kennedy Space Center, Launch Complex 39A, to the International Space Station (ISS) at 04:39:47.000 Eastern Standard Time on 2010 February 7 (09:39:47.000 UTC). To help illustrate this event, I created an AGI Viewer file for the ascent portion of the launch trajectory—from liftoff to main engine cutoff (MECO)—using data obtained from NASA.

As currently scheduled, this launch is set to go in the early morning of February 7 on the US East Coast, so this will be a night launch and should be quite spectacular. With only five shuttle launches left, this is one to be sure not to miss. Of course, I am always interested to hear reports of successful sightings of the launch, so feel free to send them to me via e-mail, along with suggestions for how I could make this information more useful.

To give a sense of what can be seen in the AGI Viewer file, some selected screen shots are included below, along with a description of the information provided herein.

Also, the weather looks frightful about now--rdale or another wx guy, can you provide a real look at the forecast for us?

Trust me, you'll still feel it on the Causeway, especially if the winds are calm given the early morning liftoff time.

This is a question about Sunday morning launch and what to do while there. I know the website said that during the day launches you go in and can look around at exhibits, etc. Will all of them be open overnight for the sunday morning launch, or will everything be closed? Just wondering if we will have things to do or just sit there. I assume they have restrooms open and things like that, but will buildings be open or closed to tour? Thanks to anyone who can help.

This is my first post! My fiancee and I are going to Florida for our first (and unfortunately, probably our last) shuttle launch. We're coming from NC so it's going to be a little bit of a hike for us, but it's been a life-long dream to see one of these up close. I didn't realize that getting tickets would be such a big deal so we're out of luck on that...I've read this thread and some of the older ones so it now looks like Space View Park is the best bet.
Anyway, just wanted to say thanks to all the posters for the good info. At least now I've got an idea about where to go. I'd have hated showing up at KSC and finding out there that we were out of luck!

Have any congressional viewers for STS130 received their email from NASA HQ?  According to my last email, they were supposed to give arrival information a week or so ahead of time.

They were sent out this afternoon.

Still haven't received mine yet.   :-\

hi everyone. I am headed down for my first launch and currently have reservations to be on a boat on the banana river during launch. has anyone ever done this before / how is it?

We also have a connection with KSC who can probably get us tickets (I'm assuming causeway) but I'm not sure which option is better. My biggest concern with the causeway is that we'd have to get there 5 or 6 hours early, and my parents who will be with me are close to 80 years old. The boat doesn't board until 4am, so the wait time is minimal.

any thoughts for a rookie would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Gordon22, can you give any info on the boat thing? Would be interested as I thought all the boats and planes have an area that by law they may not pass.

Two days. Expect them no earlier than Tuesday... and pay attention on here for the times at which they are expected to lock through Port Canaveral.

In my previous attempts with similiar schedules, everything was open.  The public tour was limited (as it is on any launch day) but otherwise things were open, including the Shuttle Launch Experience, IMAX, Saturn V exhibit, etc.  I believe the usual food and drink options were available, but I always brought mine so I'm not as sure on that point.

Since this will be our only time to be there, I at least wanted to see some things. Was not sure about water and things, not sure if it was like airport, so will take some water and snacks, as well. For those of you who have never been to the VC, you may want to bring your own food and drink... it's pretty expensive (as you can imagine any tourist attraction is).  Just wanted to throw that in, as it was like 3 dollars for a soda back before STS-129...!  Just some friendly advice ;)

Folster, I went to the park last July, but it was scrubbed. i left Orlando at noon for a 7 pm launch. traffic was good and i got a parking space at a bank right there that was closed because it was a Saturday,I think. People continued to come up to the very end, but I cant even imagine how far they had to park, or where. Also someone on another forum told me to go on 95 going home, and go to Melbourne and then back to Orlando as it is more miles, but faster after a launch. I did not do it because we got lost afterwards, long story, and it took us about 3 hours to get back going that toll. So there is some info for you. I am staying in Cocoa this time as we are only doing the shuttle.

OK I have one more question for anybody. I emailed KSC and she sent a nice email back that things will be going on that night, including the tour bus that will go to Apollo/Saturn V Center. Now I looked on the map and that place is VERY close to the launch pad. So if we got on this tour bus, are we actually going to go and be able to see Endeavour very close???? We only have Visitor center tickets, but when I saw how close that stop of the tour is in relation to the launch pad. I was in disbelief. So would we really be close??? It will be so worth getting there early if I know that I have a chance to at least get close for a few minutes. Anyone tell me if this is the case? The KSC klady said the tour bus would make 2 trips that evening.

AND thanks to everyone on here who has been so great in answering my questions. I leave Friday morning at 4 am from Texas to drive to Florida, so hope I have some luck and get to see it. Thanks again...Naydene

The Apollo/Saturn V center is over three miles from the pad and on the other side of Banana Creek. Gotta wonder if the map is accurately labeled.

Here is the Saturn V center, you can zoom out to see the pads to the east:

You will see the pad, but the RSS and FSS will block all views of Endeavour, the ET, and the SRBs.

Right - I forgot to mention that too. But she'll see the shuttle as soon as it clears the tower, and (depending on the weather) the sound is a lot more spectacular at Banana Creek than at, say, the causeway.

Well I will be back to the visitor center before it goes up, which I already knew. I watched some youtubes so that I knew what to expect from visitor center, and it looks like it will be amazing.

So I am a little confused. So if I went to the Saturn site on the tour just to go out there and back before the launch, It the Endeavour not visible? I take it that it may be behind trees as well, kind of like the visitor center? Will not try to do it if I can't see it sitting on launch pad.

This is your view of the launch pads from the Saturn V center. 39B is on the left, 39A (Endeavour) is on the right. The other picture shows 39A zoomed in a bit. As Chris and Jorge have noted, you really cant see the shuttle very well from this vantage point due to the RSS & FSS. But will be definitely closer than what you'll see at the VC

I am so glad someone brought up PLayalinda. I was going to ask that but thought I had already asked too much. For the future, if I ever get to Florida this summer,It looks like 5 days in advance that beach closes, but is it really close and could you get a good look at the shuttle after it has been rolled out? I always planned to be there a day before and then a couple days in case it delays, but if you planned it like 5 days in advance, would that beach be a fabulous place to see it up close, as long as I knew it was not cloesed yet? Isn't that just like a mile away? I may have this plan if it gets delayed this time and I have to come back for July.

I would say the parking area closest to pad A is about 3 1/2 miles away from the pad.  I have never done it, but supposedly you can walk about a mile down the beach to where there is a fence, so possibly you can get withing 2 1/2 miles of the pad -- the view is very good, camera shots don't do it justice really.

Closure is always 6pm about 3 days prior to launch.

All:

Thru a little sleight-of-hand and careful maneuvering, I was able to get a very reasonable round trip from El Paso to Orlando this weekend.  So now I have to try to find a launch viewing ticket at the last minute.

Thinking very strongly about the Island Boat Lines tour, but if I could get to the causeway I think I'd really like that.  I was there for STS-125.

Anybody have one extra ticket, or a good idea where I might find one?

Also, saw the posts re: NSF dinner.  Looking forward to some great Dixie Crossroads chow!

As of yesterday morning, Dolphin Tours was still selling causeway tickets.  They aren't available online, but you may want to try giving them a call (407-352-4646).  The problem with them (other than the price) is that their nearest pickup is Orlando... though maybe you don't mind that since you are flying in to Orlando.

Through good graces we have been able to get 3 vip tickets for the banana creek viewing area. The letter we have says get there at 1:15 so we can get on the bus at 3:00 am promptly.

One question is  - will there be traffic trying to get there at 1:15 am? If I understand correctly, we drive to KSC visitors complex, park and then get on the VIP bus at 3am?

Also - is it hopeless trying to take pictures with my 12x zoom digital camera? I know they won't be great, but if i had just one picture i took myself where you can see the shuttle itself I'd be happy - then go back to watching with the naked eye....

keeping fingers very crossed - only have one chance to see launch on Sunday am!

thanks

Congrats on the tickets, a 12x zoom will be more than enough to get good pictures from Banana Creek. I would recommend using manual setting and disable the auto focus if you can. Your camera will go crazy as soon as it lifts off if you arent.

for the vip tickets does letter have you meeting at the visitor center?  they often have a meeting point off site at merrit square mall which is south of KSC.  But that can change, and on one of the summer attempts with an early launch time they had made a change with about 24 hours notice from the mall to the visitor center. That required us to pick up the same kind of vehicle pass used to access the  KSCVC on launch day. but that then scrubbed.
For cameras night kind of tricky as it goes from night to day to night in the span of  about 15 seconds. launchphotography.com has good tips on photos

Will be heading up to Titusville to catch our first shuttle launch. We're excited! :) After doing some research on google map the top two locations to view the Shuttle free are between

Space View Park (where the Wachovia bank is located?)
and
Sand Point Park (along the Max Brewer Memorial Pkwy)

Going based on the map, I would say Sand Point Park is slightly closer no? For those who have been to both, which would be a better location? How are the restrooms, if any? The crowds? And how early would I need to get there to get a good spot?

Space View Park is great Burger King near by (probably closed for this one) the one caveat Ive found with svp is be as far front to water as you can get because the trees you will otherwise be standing under will block comlete view of ascent and to some extent the condo building to your left.  This is more for 60+ seconds into flight. I may try walking towards max brewer causeway.  From SVP you will also have some public address with commentary. For a May Saturday 2pm launch I was able to park easily about 90 minutes prior to launch at SVP but by then the best unobstructed views were long gone. But I was under the shade of trees for that one.

I am flying to Florida tomorrow morning, and staying in Melbourne. I will be driving towards space view park to view the launch.

I was wondering if anyone was interested in carpooling from the Melbourne area.

Also, I have heard that some people with beach houses in the Titusville area will sell parking in their driveway and let you view the launch from their beach access. Is this true? And is there anyone on here interested? I would definitely be willing to pay......

Just arrived in Titusville today for the launch, either its just me or this area is oozing of excitement (could also be some others I've bummed into in town for launch as well). Currently raining and very cloudy... but it'll pass.

As for KSC being open all night; I believe it MAY close after the launch and once everyone leaves (at least that's what they did for 128) But as for wandering around the park before hand, you should be fine. For 128 we arrived at 5pm and wandered around the park until we had to board a buss at 11pm.

If anyone ends up with a spare single Banana Creek pass, I'd really appreciate the opportunity to make sure it doesn't go unused.

Arriving at MCO tomorrow, 4:30 PM, returning to MCO Sun AM after launch for 1:30 PM return flight to El Paso/Fort Bliss.  This is a one-shot for me, hoping my two-time launch mojo is intact.

Last launch I will have a chance to see before Iraq deployment.  Then 18 months of ISS passes to keep my space fever in check.

Ditto above post for 1 extra pass either causeway or B Creek. On Wait list for 130, but congressional contact very discouraging even standing by next to bus hoping for no shows (wx in Washington DC may cause a few no shows was my thinking/hoping. For the summer scrub launches many times there were plenty of empty seats on buses. kind of bummer hope that doesn't happen for 130.

Last night we arrived early (9:30) for our Causeway Viewing for the Dine with an Astronaut. Timing wise everything worked out great.  Anyone now how the line to park and go through screening was later, or how it might be later tonight?

We are thinking of a arriving later but with enough time to park, make it though screening, and make the last couple rounds of buses.  My five year old is going to be a wreck, and want to minimize the damage.

Thanks.

My experience with launch scrubs is that less viewers show up than did for original date.
It's hard to say how many will not return however, with only 5 launches remaining.

Two questions:

1) Anyone on the east coast of the US going out to see Endeavour come up the east coast during powered flight?  I was ready to go this morning, but I don't think I can do the earlier wake up on Monday and still have a productive week at work.  The moon was in the southeast, and it would have been a really cool sight.

2)  At the end of the first orbit, will the shuttle be passing over the eastern US?  About 90 minutes after launch, it will be twilight here and the shuttle would be visible.  There is an ISS overflight here in the NYC area at 5:32EST.  Any chance we'll see the shuttle at the end of the first orbit?  I haven't been able to find a web site that plots the first orbit.

Im going out. Skipped my usual afternoon nap to make sure I get enough sleep, but Ill only lose an hour or so anyways. Even if Endeavor had gotten up this morning, I wouldnt have been able to see it, too many clouds then, and if it doesnt clear up anymore than what it is now, Ill watch it on tv, then roll over and sleep some more.

Last night at 11:30 the line went well over 1/2 the length of the parking
lot. The line moved pretty quick. It took about an hour to get in.
I think I may show up later tonight since a lot of people probably won't
show up due to the Super Bowl and having to go to work in the A.M.

Hopefully I can find a causeway ticket that some one does not need. :-\

1.) Hi Bob...I plan (again) on seeing Endeavour fly by Long Island early Monday morning.
Forecast here is for clear skies.
The last 30 seconds or so of powered flight and MECO is a pretty amazing site from here!

2.) A friend who tracks satellites explained it like this..."That 25-minute delay now places Endeavour mostly in the Earth's shadow during that first pass (now set for around 5:54 a.m.)!  The altitude of the orbiter on that first circuit of the globe doesn't get any higher than 110 miles high . . . not high enough at that altitude to catch the light of the Sun as it begins to rise above the Atlantic far to its southeast".

With this possibly the last night launch of shuttle program, I don't mind losing some sleep.

Orlando TV station said if liftoff does not occur tomorrow they would not make another attempt until the weekend. I have not heard that officially though. Any info on whether that is the case? If so tomorrow is my last chance since I am heading home no later than Wednesday. Maybe shuttle must stand down to accommodate SDO on Wednesday.

Bill Harwood's site indicates the same.
If for some reason, they can't go Monday a.m., Atlas 5 gets the range and Endeavours' next attempt is Feb. 13.

Agency Flight Readiness Review presentations (on L2) also confirm this - if for any reason this attempt is scrubbed, there will be a 120hr (5-day) scrub turnaround while Atlas has the range.

I watched the launch from the Nasa causeway launch viewing site (foxtrot) , it looked bleak just before the T-9 minute hold started with a lot of cloud cover but it cleared before the hold ended. Man, expectations and emotions ran wild then .. a cheer went up from the crowd as all polls where GO for launch!
I don't have any photos from the launch, focused on taking it all in as I was a firsttimer but I let the camcorder run throughut, hopefully I got some decent video .. and the noise was unbelievable!
I could see the SRB:s separate with my own eyes (at least that is what I thought it was).
And it became bright as day when the SRB:s lit, just amazing!

And thanks to Chris for the excellent work with the NSF dinner, just as amazing as the launch.

Regards/Mats from Sweden

A friend and I, plus several other people from around town, went down to Fort Fisher (near Wilmington, NC) to the secluded southern tip of the island to watch. We saw it from about 1 minute, 30 seconds MET to MECO. It looked amazing with the SRBs taking it up. A beautiful bright red color with a long, prominent flame trail, making a very apparent arc over the ocean. It was much like seeing it from the Cape, but in miniature. What blew me away more than seeing it at the Cape, though, was that you got a real idea of how amazingly fast the thing goes. In the time it takes me to take my garbage can from the side of the house to the street, the Shuttle went from being stationary in Florida to being over 400 miles away, off the coast of NC, due East of me. Another 3 minutes brought it 30 degrees east of North according to my position. In just 7 minutes or so, the thing had gone from horizon to horizon at about a 150-degree angle. Incredible.

I didn't see too many videos of liftoff yesterday since it hardly compared with being there. ;) But I just watched the NASA TV video and see there was some frost on the tank. That is unusual.

I thought Allard Beutel's pre launch commentary was quite good. However in those final seconds he seemed a little hesitant. Almost sounded like he was asking "zero?" at T-0. ;-) That is one reason why watching out at the Banana River site I was almost afraid we were going to see a last second abort. Thankfully that has not happened for many years though, and with luck they will get through these remaining 4 missions without that occurring again.

But having eyewitnessed the engine shutdowns on 41D, 51F, and 68, I think of those events with every launch and practically hold my breath until I see the solids ignite. I was also there for last second scrubs on STS 56 and 93, but saw them lift off a couple of days later. So my past experiences always have me aware that things can go wrong right up to the end.  130 went perfectly though and I am thrilled I was there to see it.

No fear on the frost wrt the ET. The weather conditions being cold, combined with the tank having gone through a cryo cycle the night before played a part in what you saw.

For those of you on the causeway I have a question that I have never found a detailed answer on: When the launch was scrubbed did you purchase another $56 ticket for the next attempt, and if so where did you do this and was it a pretty straightforward process?
Thanks, and I hope to have tickets for March and hope to meet some fellow NSF'ers!

When we had to hand over our tickets before boarding the buses to the causeway we all got a voucher that entitled us to buy new causeway tickets in the event of a scrub on a first come first serve basis.
So when I came back from the causeway after the scrub I hightailed to the ticket booths to buy a new ticket for about $21.
BTW there are different colors for the causeway tickets, orange, purple and brown - anyone who knows the significance of these colors. I had orange on both my tickets.

Just so you know, I was in KSC for this launch on Sunday am, and at about?? not sure because i was resting my eyes, I heard them doing a call on the intercom that "ALL ticket holders, purple, brown, and orange, needed to proceed to the buses immediately as this was the last one leaving for the night ". I am guessing they are different times?

We were at banana creek too - first time and so glad we stayed - almost didn't come back after sunday morning. A really incredible experience that I am thrilled I got to see.

We had 2 cameras going - , and were pretty excited to get a few decent pictures (since we aren't camera people). I know why people said "just watch it and don't worry about a picture" but I am thrilled to be able to have the first picture below as something we took....thanks to everyone for all your info and help in the process, great site you have here.

Great video floron. I am a little south of you in Victoria, and was there as well. I had to get back on Monday so was only able to see it from Titusville.stopped in a parking lot and watched from there, then had to get on the road back to Texas. I was in KSC for the first night, though and did most of the stuff, as I had never been there before. I really appreciate the video, because I wanted to just stand in awe and watch, as this was my 3rd trip to try and see it launch over 10 years and I finally got to see it. I am going to show my extended family your video because I was trying to describe the sound we heard and now they can hear it as well. I also missed the stuff you have pics on .I went to the Saturn Center but did not see that. Was it in a side room?We were one of the last busses to go out there, and were kind of being hurried out, so am thinking it was in a side room( although I was so in awe of that whole rocket in there that I sort of forgot about everything else). Am gonna try to make it in July , as it will be the last time I can make it and will try for tickets again.

Hey, 3rd time lucky... ;)

i guess one of the good things about a cloudy night launch is that it would look just as good from Titusville as it would from the Visitor's Center or the Causeway...the spectacle mainly comes from the shuttle lighting the clouds up like a sunrise, although i suppose the sound would be a little more muted.

If you're interested, my video of last year's launch of Atlantis to the Hubble has better sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJjZXwelb3A (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJjZXwelb3A)

The Apollo 14 CM was in the Saturn V Center, about halfway down the hall behind a faux bank-vault door...last year it was over in the Astronaut Hall of Fame, and i was initially disappointed to find it missing (the guy at the ticket desk thought it had gone to the Smithsonian). I was happy to find it the next day at the SVC, and the new display is much better than the old one (no horrible Plexiglas in the way).

That was a great video as well. I was very surprised at the sound that we were able to hear from the grocery store parking lot. While it was not as loud as the video, it was quite loud. From where we were standing(and one other car was there watching as well), it looked like it was coming toward us and the sound was great.Hope to see from KSC in July. Last July was when we did not see it, as thunderstorms decided to roll in 10 minutes before liftoff. To make matters worse, a friend called as we were stuck in 5 oclock traffic in Houston coming back, to say it had just launched!!!!!Will try to get to see other exhibits we missed this time. I had driven 19 hours straight to Orlando the day before, and then overnight launch, I was tired and sat alot. I am too old for these overnight things!!!

I am already planning on being back in July for that liftoff. Hopefully it will go up when I am in KSC, not a parking lot!!!! Anyway, I posted a trip report on Trip advisor of my expedition, so if anyone is interested in reading it, you can find it here. It was memorable and I hope to be back soon. In the meantime, I will keep checking back here to keep up with the latest in shuttle activities.  Thanks again, Naydene

looks like this is from south southeast comments on you tube say 1 mile away. which with audio delay seems close about 15seconds for sound so I thought maybe 2 miles.  anyone know what the whining sound is in background before shuttle noise come up?
Closest anyone gets is press, and that is a tick over 3 miles, and that is about 15 seconds for the delay

I can tell you they're closer than 3 miles.  The air was very thin that night, and I time the delay they're hearing from main engine start, which places them a little less than 2 and a half miles.  From the VAB/Banana Creek area I can tell you that we barely heard main engine start and the wave of sound came from the SRBs, and a little later than normal.  The fact that they heard main engine start and the actual SRB ignition places them quite a bit closer than the rest of us on-site that night.

The other clue is the visuals - from any of the close-up viewing areas other than the Fire Tower, you can't see the full stack.  They're closer than the Fire Tower, which is around 4 miles.

Press site is almost exactly 3 miles from 39A.

Is anyone heading to Edwards tomorrow night?  Just curious about when others are planning to be out there and where they are viewing from.

I'm thinking about it, though I'm still not 100% sure. If I do go which is now looking around Monday night instead of tonight (assuming KSC is NO-GO tonight & tomorrow) I heard there is a nice viewing spot on Highway 58 @ 20 Mule Team Rd. There is a video on Youtube of a crowd of people there and they seemed to get a good view of it. I also saw some photos from approx the same location and that person was able to view touchdown (you could see the puffs of smoke from the Main Gear). I'll look for the videos & photos and post them if I can find them.

If you do go out on Monday and Endeavour is still on-orbit, keep an eye on the wind direction, which may drive which end of the runway the orbiter would land on.  The 20 Mule Team Road site is great for approaches to Runway 22, but for the other end (Runway 04), you'd likely want to be on the south side of the base.

Yeah I've been considering holding off as well, but I think I'm going to go anyway.  I saw 130 lift off, and I would be bummed if weather cleared at Edwards and I missed an op to see launch and landing of a single mission.  I'll stick around for Monday night if it doesn't land tonight though.

I was wondering about locations on-base actually, I'm not sure why I didn't clarify that.  That's interesting though, I didn't realize you could see touchdown from there.

That's true, I forgot to mention that thanks. So far and I know this is WAY early, but I think the ground tracks have it on 22, but that is subject to change before landing. I'm not sure of any good sites to the South with the exception of the Rogers Public viewing site which they rarely open. All I can say is the anticipation for this one is exciting!

Unless you know someone that works on base forget about getting on base. It is almost impossible to get on base for a shuttle landing (press etc.. excluded) I have a couple of friends that are part of the VIP group at Edwards and the closest they got was at the North part of the base, about 5 miles away. You'd have better chances at 20 Mule Team Rd. If in fact they target for 22.

And yeah I second the surprise of seeing touchdown from that location. Here are the photos and video I was talking about:

Both have videos and are different perspectives.

I don't know anyone that works on base, but I was able to get on base for STS-128 landing, viewing, and ferry flight takeoff with a military ID.  I guess it hadn't occurred to me that things might be different for this landing - any more info?  I'm not familiar with the VIP group you mention.

For 128 I didn't know exactly where to go and I ended up blowing my best opportunity, because the roads around south base were shut down an hour or more prior to landing.  I drove past the road and burned a little too much time talking with some airmen I had asked for directions, and when I came back it was closed down.  I ended up about 3.5 miles north of the strip on a hilltop with a handful of other folks, and while it was a great view I was hoping to be a little more prepared this time!  If anyone has any advice I'm all ears :).

The locations I used during STS-128 are marked here:  http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=118385923353024536633.00048024f75e0b945af9a&t=h&z=13

Oh OK , I didn't know you were in the Military. Yeah with a Military ID it's no problem, but for us civilians we have no hope, lol. As for the VIP group I don't have a lot of info, I just know a guy who is retired Air Force and him and his wife were explaining it to me. To get into it though I was told I would have to go through security screening etc... Still pondering it though, sounds pretty neat. Anyhow cool that you got to see 128 land from so close!!

Welcome home, Endeavour! It was truly a magical 2 weeks as I watched it take off from Titusville, followed its progress in space, and watched it land this evening from my computer back home in Texas. I find the whole space program so wonderful, and am so sad that these will soon stop flying. Glad I took the time and was able to at least see it take off and share with my kids.
We'll see you in July for your final trip, Endeavour.

Based on our experience and what I have heard from other on this forum is that NASA's makes there call about month prior to launch date.  My guess is you will not hear anything till the latter part of June.  You might try and confirm with your congress person that NASA has you on thier waiting list.  Here's how it happened for us with STS-130.

Right after Thanksgiving my wife asked what I wanted for Christmas.  I told her I wanted to go to Florida and see STS-130 take off.  She asked me how to go about getting tickets.  I told her we could try and buy them online or go through our congressman.  She opted to try the congressman route first.

She emailed my congressman's (Dennis Moore D-KS) chief of staff on 12/2/09 (T-68 days) and asked about getting tickets.  He emailed back the next day saying he would be glad to help out and asked how many wanted to go.  He said he would let us know when he heard something.

On 12/10/09 (T-60 days), Moore's office emailed back and confirmed that Nasa had us on thier waiting list.  They also forwarded me the email they received from the NASA congressional contact.  Text of that email is below.

Thanks for sending this. Requests are taken on a first-come, first-serve basis, and I will inform you as to whether or not the passes can be granted about a month prior to the scheduled launch. If they are granted, an invitation is mailed directly to the home mailing address that is good for everyone in the party.

Due to the overwhelming amount of requests NASA has received for the remaining space shuttle launches, we have recently implemented new guidelines regarding requests. There is now a limit of five (5) people per party. We can make the exception for the infant, but we normally try and stick to this policy.

Also, we don't require social security numbers or dates of birth, but knowing the ages of the guests is helpful.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

On 1/5/10 (T-35 days) we received confirmation via email from our congressman's office that we had tickets.  They also forwarded on the email from NASA.  Text of email is below:

to view the STS-130 Space Shuttle launch, which is currently scheduled
for 4:39 AM EST on Sunday, February 7, 2010 from Kennedy Space Center,
FL (the launch has recently been rescheduled from February 4th).

NASA is pleased to inform you that we are able to accommodate your
request(s). Invitations will be mailed to the mailing address(es) you
provided in each request. Please pass along this information to your
constituents. They will need to follow the instructions in the
invitation to RSVP directly to NASA.

"Tickets" were received from NASA on 1/12/10 (T-27 days).

The rest is history.   I hope this helps.

Now this mission is all wrapped up I would really appreciate hearing peoples experience at causeway ticket purchases and also with re-purchasing after the -9 min scrub. Hoping to get over for STS-132 but I hear since my last launch they have changed the purchase proceedure somewhat.

Thanks

As we stood in the queue to get on the buses to the causeway they were handing out little slips of paper...if launch was scrubbed you were supposed to take those slips to the ticket booths out in front of the Visitor's Center where they would sell you another LTT ticket (they were about $22 each if i remember correctly). The blurb on the slip said that tickets were limited, but our bus driver basically said that we were pretty much guaranteed to get a replacement. The line for the booth took about 30 minutes to get through. so...much...queuing... :P

I think the High Res images I took that day can be seen in L2.
