SpaceX cost competitiveness rests on
1) Design for manufacturability, commonality of components if maximized and they are designed to require the least time and effort to make and assemble. Traditional aero-space engineering (and most engineering generally) doesn't concern itself with the manufacturing cost of the components.
2) Utilizing low cost supplier many being qualified by SpaceX in order to make it happen. Vertical integration is a fallback when such suppliers can't be found, but it is very likely that SpaceX could save even more money by lowering their integration and buying more components from suppliers.
