Falcon 9 Stage 2 Forward Bulkhead Dimensions
« on: 01/19/2025 12:39 pm »
Specifically, I am investigating how much the Stage 2 forward bulkhead protrudes into the Dragon trunk section. I have seen some cartoons on the Google, but no drawings with dimensions.

Except for a cartoon that indicated that some part of the top of the bulkhead was 1.2 meters wide.

not publicly available.  You are going to have to photogrammetry.

The forward dome of the second stage does not seem to impinge into the Dragon trunk as much as the diagram indicates.

Is there another reason why the Dragon trunk rear is off limits to cargo? Is it a c/g issue?

Where did you get the diagram? At first glance, it appears to be a Dragon 1 with its shorter non-extended trunk, not a Dragon 2. See:

That appears to be the vintage F9 US so not applicable to F9 Block 5. Besides, there are avionics boxes that go on top of that forward dome and also that appears to be the old Dragon design, as Dan already said.

All the more so because the hatch opening in the diagram looks like the CBM hatch.
Following the space program since before Apollo 8.

Do you have a newer diagram of the Dragon 2 trunk?

Nope, I'm just a retired guy surfing the internet, with no particular expertise.

There seems to be a shortage of data on the current Falcon Stage 2.  The Falcon user guide is no help, all diagrams are based on launch adapters.

Similarly, I can't find data on the Dragon 2 trunk dimensions.

Because SpaceX hasn't released it.  It is even not readily available to the government.  SpaceX hasn't released any drawings with detailed dimensions.  it is propriety info as far as they are concerned.

A user doesn't need to know anything more than launch adapters.

Who is responsible for packing unpressurized up-mass in the Trunk for Cargo Dragon CRS and Crew Dragon CCP missions to the ISS? Is this NASA or SpaceX? Whoever does this packing needs this information. This cargo must somehow hang from the Trunk instead of being supported by the US, right?

Likewise, the designers of the Nanoracks Bishop Airlock module had to have had some information source to correctly size their module. So, the information exists outside SpaceX. There should be an Unpressurized Payloads User Guide for Dragon.

In a perfect world.

I still don't know if the Cargo Dragon 2 trunk is larger than the Cargo Dragon 1 trunk.
