Unread Topics not working
« on: 04/28/2025 09:33 pm »
Not really where to post this issue. This area seemed the best place.

If I click on unread topics from the top bar, then it is empty, implying that everything has been read. But if I browse around the forums, I can find unread content.

Kinda breaks the site for me as I live by unread topics. Gives me a nice overview of what has been posted to since I last visited. Right now I have no way of finding unread topics.

Note that I did get some cloudflair issues initially, but I never got an error, more of a timeout scenario, which resolved itself within a few minutes of retrying. Most prob. correlation, but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

--- edit (a few mins after I posted this ---

Maybe it's working again for new posts from now? New posts are appearing in unread topics, but existing unread threads are not. So weird.

Do you see an "All Unread Topics" button?  Try that to see everything.

I find if I check the website on my iPad or iPhone in the morning and then check it later on my desktop computer, the Unread Topics will be empty or very sparse. I suppose it has something to do with my IP address being recognized as having already "read" all topics.

FYI: The 'all unread topics' does not appear on mobile. (when using full theme on a mobile device)

Try this as an emergency backup.  It happens to me occasionally, or when I accidentally press the "Mark ALL messages as read" button by mistake:

It is the last 100 posts in reverse chronological order.  It's crude but works.

No, cannot see it sorry. I'm on desktop, but not sure where I should be seeing it?  I do see an option at the very bottom called "View the most recent posts in this forum". But I found it very difficult to use as it doesn't show you the threads, but the posts.

I'll give that a try, thank you.

I have to admit, I find odd behavior with the site. If I look at the site and close the tab on my browser, and come back in, everything is marked as read even though I didn't read everything or manually choose "Mark all as read". I've learnt to live with it though.

The "All Unread Topics" button should be on the Unread Topics page, at the bottom.

Thanks, litton4, and here is the main reason why this could easily occur to anyone:

In the "Unread Topics" web page, the option to delete all remaining posts is located in the same position as the "Read Unread Post" button in the Forum Thread Section. I sometimes jump from the Unread to the Section listing to read only those new posts within a thread section, like I want to see only F9 activity instead of searching for it in the "Unread Topics" page. When I return to this page from the Forum Thread Section, I mistakenly hit the "Mark All Messages Read" button and kick myself. If NSF would only move one of those buttons to another location on that line, I wouldn't mistake it so often.

The "All Unread Topics" button should be on the Unread Topics page, at the bottom.

Ahh. That's identical to the "Unread Topics" in the top bar for the website. If you mouse over you can check the URLs for both and they're identical. My go to for reading this site is unread topics :-)

---

The problem hasn't reoccurred, and I am wondering if it's related to me switching to Firefox (now that chrome enforces manifest 3).

They're not identical for me.  The one on top has "action=unread;start=0" and the one on the bottom has "action=unread;all;start=0".  The "all" part has an effect.

Yes, that's correct. I use the "all" method when the other one doesn't give me any results, as I clean the cache just before entering NSF.  Finally, the all-ditch query is the "recent":

I always go to the "All unread topics" at the bottom of each section (eg after clicking on "Unread topics" for "General Discussion")

Otherwise, "Mark all read" only clears the most recent ones and you'll still see flags on the lists for those that have older topics.
I use that since if I've missed reading for a day or 3 (eg when on holiday) there are older topics that might be of interest.
