STS-126: Viewing (Going to the Launch etc.)

Any idea when the STS 126 launch tickets will go on sale?

(Edit, may as well make this the viewing thread to keep everything in one place - Chris).

Going to this Launch {Fingers crossed} Would love to get a ticket to view from inside KSC but if not any suggestions for the best outside view?

Looks like I'll be going to this launch.

I had e-mailed my congressman back in April to get tickets to a launch in October.  He came through and got me the VIP tickets for STS-125.  Since it's now moved to, like, February, I got an email from NASA asking if I would like to attend this one instead.  Either way, it'll be a plane ticket, so I figured...what the heck!

Looking forward to the launch!

How does (did?) it work to get tickets from your congressman?  I contacted mine about getting tickets to STS-126 or a future launch but was told they're not doing that program anymore.

How much better is the view from the VIP area than the Causeway?

What are the chances this launch will be rescheduled for the 14th instead of the 16th. I have a flight booked from Ireland for the 15th.

Tough call, as the 16th was based on tight crew loading. Still is tight, but they've set in some proceedures (where they work through some extra days) to help improve. Remember, they want to aim for as early as possible with this window ending on the 25th. So they'll do all that is possible to get to the 14th, which is the official current NET (the PAO release is based on the previous NET).

We'll update as we go.

I'll take this one. As far as I'm concerned, yes the 'get together to eat and talk the day before launch' is still on.  I'll gladly coordinate this as I live in Daytona and it's no problem to get down to Titusville two days in a row.

To anyone interested in attending, just send me a PM and I'll start putting a plan together! :)

I see the PAO for this launch will be Candrea Thomas. That is a new name. I assume she is female. ;) If so she will be only the second woman to do commentary for a manned space flight.

I should keep my eye on when tickets go on sale for launch since I hope to be at this one. If I do not get a pass from my senator I will try to have a back up. If the pass comes through I might have a ticket to give away. We shall see. I hope a target launch date is announced soon so I can make some firm plans.

I live in Tampa Florida for 13 years my lifetime and have been to KSC 4 times and I know teachers get into KSC free but do they gat any deals on launches?

My next question is does anybody know if there is a plain launch ticket WITHOUT the whole visitor complex ticket and every thing like that. I just want the closest ticket but I don't need a ticket for the Visitor complex because I just went in August. ;)

Thanks

Looking fine. L2 processing reports are small at the moment (no issues). Almost slowed right down waiting for Atlantis to vacate 39A.

Will get busier when she takes her place on 39A and then there's crew loading and a bit of tightness on the LON support (writing up that now - along with current scheduling options for 2009), but no signs of stress on the 126 NET right now.

Yes I have recieved my confirmation email. But they have not taken the funds. With the STS-125 Tickets they didnt take the funds for a few weeks actually.

I am now thinking of buying my airline tickets... Should I wait untill the actually "move" endeavour to Pad;A? or should that be a flawless activity? just your opinions? thanks all

The rollover (or rollabout as this one will be) should be issue free.

Key milestones are the Level II SSP FRR (October 21-22), before the launch date is set at the Level I Agency FRR on October 30-31.

Anything can happen in the flow anyway, so it's always a bit of a gamble with the plane tickets, but if a problem is noted on L2, I'll copy it across to the public side immediately.

Right now, Nov 14 looks doable.

If you want to see the launch from the causeway, try Gray Line Orlando/Gator Tours.

http://gatortours.com/TOURS.asp?TOUR_ID=99&Action=Marquee

Otherwise there are some good spots to watch from Titusville.

No word yet from my Congressional Representative about the tickets they requested from NASA for STS-126.  Perhaps I'll hear next week, which would be one month before the scheduled launch date.
I read earlier on this site about a STS-125 Congressional ticket holder being offered a spot for STS-126.  Maybe I'll get to see 125 launch after all, but in Spring.  All things considered, I'll like to go sooner.

I guess I was lucky. I got online immediately at 9 AM and was able to get a ticket. Less than 5 minutes later I checked again and they were sold out. I see a few other NSF members here got tickets also. Hope to see you there.

I am still hoping I get a pass from my senator's office. I bought the ticket today as a back up in case that other option does not work out. If I do get the other pass I might have a space ticket. We'll see how that goes.

First notify me if you have extra tickets. ;)

Second how do you get tickets from your senator? Do you email them or call them? Ya I was one of the un lucky ones. I got on at 9AM filled out the form but they were sold out by the time I finished. :'(

Sorry about the typo. I meant I might have a *spare* ticket. Though some might call it a space ticket anyway.  ;)

You can call, email or fax your senator or representative's office. I forget how I did it the first time but I contacted his local office, not the one in DC. I suppose you could try the DC office too though. I have been assisted by an aide, who has been able to get me the passes a couple of times. Hopefully you can find a good contact person also.

Anyone here know about this tour offered by the Kennedy Space Center?

Was wondering where exactly in Cocoa Beach they'd be viewing the launch from?
Thanks.

Something doesn't sound right there...Cocoa Beach is south, not north, of KSC.  Cocoa isn't really a great place for a shuttle launch either, it's pretty far away compared to Titusville.

I have not done the LTT option in the past so if that works out for me I would have a few questions. I checked the KSC visitor center webpage and they had some info. I was surprised to read you are given an assigned time to arrive at the visitor center on launch day. Anyone know how far in advance you have to be there? I am trying to decide when to head down to the space coast. I figure to be safe I should go the day before launch but with liftoff slated for 7:55 pm I thought I could take a chance and depart early on the morning of the 14th. Anyone know how long before liftoff you are expected to be at the visitor center? Do they assign you to a particular bus? If not I would probably prefer to be on one of the last ones to leave. Probably more comfortable at the VC than being outside at the causeway with no place to sit down. ;) If anyone can fill me in with some info I appreciate it.

Anyone know how far in advance you have to be there?
Hey Tom, you can arrive as early as you want or at least at the time the VC opens, this is what I have done in the past. The card will say "Must Arrive By Or Before.." the noted time, not necessarily a "scheduled" time.  What I have experienced is that at some point during the day (launch time dependent) they set up security check points along the roads entering the the space center and only allow cars with the place cards through to the VC and then, at a later point closer to the "arrive before" time they stop all general public traffic into the center.
Quote
Do they assign you to a particular bus?
No. Those going out to the causeway with LTT or outside tours LTT, get on line to wait on the buses to take you out to the causeway.  I think the causeway buses start moving after the crew arrives at the pad and security gives the all clear for vehicle movement at the center. I'm thinking this is approx 3.5 hours prior to launch.  PM me or post a reply if you have more questions.

This may help others. A fellow I met during the STS-123 launch put together a nice trip report on experiencing a shuttle launch. This may answer yours and others questions. Also, he was able to get an inside tour of the center. Check it out.

Thanks for the info. Your friend's report shed some light on some things. Sorry to see though that you must stand in line for so long. I hate that since I am so nervous prior to these launches. The waiting is tough. I'm sure I'm not alone in feeling that way though.

Any idea for a 7:55 pm launch about what time they will be closing the gates for arrival? I am guessing it is fairly early so it's going to be a very long day. I'd better hope that congressional pass comes through. ;)

Knowing how I didn't get tickets to the launch which should I do Titusville or view from the VC. I'm leaning towards the Titusville because it costs nothing. If I do view from Titusville where should I go. :)
Thanks ;)

I was checking my old set of ticket packages and the "arrive by" times have varied between 6 to 7-1/2 hours prior to launch. So if the launch is scheduled for 7:55PM then the arrive by times would be around 12:30PM, give or take a half hour. That's a just guess from previous launches and can be used as a guideline but not anything anyone should make firm plans around.

I have a ticket to view from the visitors center. My question is can you walk to the causeway or is this not allowed. If not would I be better off not using ticket and view from Titusville so I can see the "whole" launch from pad?

The way I went about congressional tickets was through my congressman.  I sent him an e-mail back in March for STS-126 (then it was in October).  He assigned one of his aides to help me and sent me her contact info.  I called her and she called Nasa's Legislative affairs on my behalf and had me added to the request list.

I had also contacted my senator who passed me off on one of his lackeys.  He told me that he called NASA and was told the waitlist was full.  I asked him who he talked do, and he didn't know.  I asked him to forward me the e-mail, he said he didn't have it.  I told him that I know for a fact that there is a waiting list, and I though he was full of bull.

I gave him two choices a) go back, do some research, and contact NASA; or b) I go back to the senator and ask them to assign someone compentent.   He chose option 'a'.

You will need to contact your congressional representative at least 6 months before the launch...and even then, you won't know if you are on the list until about 3 weeks before the launch.  I suggest you actually talk to someone, and ask them to cc: you on the e-mail to Nasa.  That worked pretty well for me.

And yes, I was scheduled for STS-125, when it got moved to Feb.  I was contacted at the beginning of October and given the option to view 126.  I accepted.

I just found out that NASA told my Congressional Representative that there are no more Congressional tickets for STS-126.  I had asked for STS-125 and when I found out in the second week of September that Congressional tickets were closed out for STS-125, I asked for the next flight, STS-126, as the NASA contact suggested.  Perhaps many STS-125 Congressional ticker holders were switched to STS-126, as someone mentioned earlier in this (or the 125 thread).

How do I ask for tickets to the next flight when there is so much uncertainty about which flight is next?  (Rhetorical  question.)  Sigh.

Maybe I'll try the two minute beat-the-clock drill to purchase tickets when they come out for the next launch.

all the best,

I got the same message yesterday.  :( I had luck going this route a couple of times now this is twice it has not worked. What surprised me was the senator's assistant emailed me at work. I do not recall ever giving her my work email address. Not sure how she got it but that feels a bit big brotherish.  ;) Signs of things to come perhaps. But I won't get into politics now....

I'm glad I have the KSC launch ticket as an alternative. But I really am not looking forward to the hours of waiting and long lines, not to mention traffic. If I have to be at the complex 7 hours before launch I will feel like a prisoner.  :-\ OK that's overdoing it but it is going to be difficult passing the time for all those hours. Maybe I should have gone for the astronaut lunch ticket too. I hope maybe I can meet some other NSF people there while we wait.

Hello,

I do not know if this is the right place to ask, but since I'll be in Florida for about 3 weeks in November, I think I need a car, so I have to rent one. Does any of you have information what I need, what kind of insurence etc. and what is the best car rental company... ( I do not live in the USA...)

Ok... last call for anyone wishing to join a NSF group for dinner the day before launch. I currently know of 7 people interested in meeting up. If you're interested please SEND ME A PM. The restaurant needs to know for reservations by Friday as they're obviously expecting a lot of business around Endeavour's launch.

Also, I have looked at my schedule and I will offer the opportunity for those of us attending the launch (but who don't have LTTs) to view the launch together from the riverside. Please SEND ME A PM if you're interested in joining me for the night launch of Endeavour.

Hello everyone I was just wondering if the NASA Up Close Tour is open the day before launch? If not what about the regular bus tour? If these are both closed the day before launch then when do they close to begin with?

Thanks

Both tours should be running the day before launch. The regular tour usually runs the day of night launches but not to the LC-39 Observation Gantry.

Bus tours are terminated shortly before the release of the T-11 hour Built-In-Hold(BIH), which for an Nov. 14 launch would be around 3 am. EST that morning.

I'd suggest contacting Ben Cooper through his site www.LaunchPhotography.com -- when it comes to "pros" in the field of shuttle photography, there are few who can match his expertise. (Of course I try, but in all sincerity, his guidance has made me a better photographer.)

That's probably a better suggestion. Ben's a regular here and work is impressive and he probably would love to help.  I think if we pressure him he would add something to his website offering such information for the novice photographer.

Some quick / simple questions to any Forida residents. I will be flying into Orlando on the 13th and renting a car to drive to Titusville.

1. How much is the toll on the drive over? I need to get some US currency change.
2. I have not been to the states in nearly 25 years, what is the story with tipping? How much is expected?
3. Shop prices are displayed without Tax! is this true? Or do they show price with tax?
4. Would it be better to drive to the river front to watch Launch in Titusville or get a cab from the hotel?

Thanks in advance.

Well I'm not quite old enough to know some of this but for question 3 usually they show prices without tax. I live in Tampa for my whole life and have been to KSC about 5 times but have never been to a launch. For STS-126 I was going to do the eat with a astronaut and LTT tickets. Sadly I got on and filled out the form at 9am but thay were sold out by the time I was done. :'( So my plan is to go to Titusville and watch from the river where everyone goes.

1. I'd plan on spending about $5 on tolls for the drive from Orlando to Titiusville. It may not be that much, but it's a good amount to plan for.
2. In restaurants, a basic tip is about 15%. Of course, you can raise or lower this percentage depending on service.
3. Shop prices and menu prices are displayed without tax.
4. Are you staying in Titusville? If so, I guess you can take a cab. I'm offering the opportunity for NSF members to watch the launch together, so when I decide on a good meeting place you can just take a cab there and one of us will drive you to the viewing spot if you'd like. Any other questions, PM me.

You'll pass through one toll on Tollway 528 between Orlando International Airport and Titusville and the cost for a car is $1.25.

3. Shop prices and menu prices are displayed without tax.

Also Rental cars and Hotel prices are typically quoted without taxes! And taxes on these items can be much higher and more variable (different rates in every airport/town/county) than the usual state-wide flat "Sales Tax" (I'm not often in Florida so I don't remember that %).

There's nothing equivalent in the US to a Value Add Tax. Instead every local government adds something on. Especially in Florida, they love to hit tourists, as easy to tax without a voice to complain or vote against the politicians.

There's nothing equivalent in the US to a Value Add Tax. Instead every local government adds something on. Especially in Florida, they love to hit tourists, as easy to tax without a voice to complain or vote against the politicians.

As long as it keeps me from having to pay state income tax, I don't mind

New here on the forum: Hi All!

As I will be in the States (New York) till February 09, I guess I have one or two changes to watch a launch from KSC.

For STS-126, I guess the best bet is for Nov 14th, right? Then my questions:
1. Where to stay (hotel) and where to watch? Titusville, I saw on this thread?
2. When to arrive (Nov 13) and when to leave (Nov 15)?
3. Any ideas when it is virtually certain it will launch on Nov 14th? So that I can make the reservations.
4. Any meets on the day itself my wife and I can join?

Hope to see you there and thanks for your answers!
A.

Just giving snippets.. I'm not too sure on some stuff, as I'm 17 and never gone to a launch.

2) I'd plan on leaving a few days AFTER the 14th, you never know if there will be a scrub.

3) When the clock starts.. best answer I can give you.  You can generally tell a few days before, but you are never certain until T-0 and Booster ignition.  ;)

Yeah, not that helpful, but it's a little bit of an insight in the meantime so you can plan a little better.  I'd just go through this thread, though.  Very helpful stuff inside.

A note to all attending the STS-126 launch on November 14.  Sunset is at 5:30pm EST, a nearly-Full Moon will rise in the eastern Florida sky at 6:45pm (Full Moon is November 13), and Launch, of course, at 7:55pm.   Should be a spectacular show!

Don't plan it like that...leaving one day before and getting back one day after.  As Ford said, you don't know that it's going to launch on a certain day until booster ignition.

Give yourself a few days in Florida in case there's a scrub or two.

Also...regarding Florida tolls...I doubt this particular one is, but I've noticed quite a few tolls in Florida are exact-change only (no attendants at the booths).  Meaning you need a lot of quarters.  That always surprising to me as every toll I've ever been through in the northeast is much different.

The 521 Beeline/Beachline (whatever the heck we're calling it now) does have toll booth workers to provide change... at least, it did the last time I drove it in September.

A few days (1 day ?, 2 days ?) after launch the SRB's come back, is there a good place to watch the SRB's come back ? Good photo spot ?? And how do I know when they will be on their way back into port ??

Thanks

Well i hope that someone answers the question about the return viewing location of the SRB's?

But also, how far is the LTT Causeway for viewing? how far from the shuttle on pad 39A? Also, How many people would you all "guess" are allowed to have the LTT tickets? Thanks All

The SRB's usually return 24 hours after launch.

Timing is hit or miss.  Don't know of any way of finding out the actual time

They can be seen from Jetty park and many of the restaurants in the port.
Also the draw bridge on 401 would be a good spot

Another spot to catch the recovery ships returning to CCAFS is at the Canaveral Lock west of the 401 bridge. Observation area is open 6am-9pm.  But as Jim said it's hard to determine exactly when they'll be coming through the port.

Depending on where you are on the causeway, it's about 6.5-7 miles from Pad A.  Somewhere I heard there's about 5000 people on the causeway to watch a launch.  That includes KSC employees, NASA guests, etc.  I'm not sure exactly how many are from LTT sales but I would guess about 2500.

Pretty sure that was done as a special promotion.
The air show is not doing anything of the sort that I have heard of.

Actually, I believe Endeavour had just been rolled out for her STS-123 mission the morning the fly-over happened.

Thanks :)

I've seen a couple of shuttle launches from the Clarion Inn (used to be the Holiday Inn) just south of SR 50.
Great unobstructed view of 39 A and VAB and not as crowded as Space View Park.

I watched STS-118 (yes, that was a daytime launch) from a place called Paul's Smokehouse or Steakhouse or something on US1 in Titusville.  They only allowed as many people in as the parking lot would hold...which was quite a few, but kept it from being extremely crowded like the park.  Of course, being along the water, people from nearby walked there, but it still wasn't bad.

Their parking lot extends along the water, so there was a ton of water frontage and clear views to the pad.  The restaurant was convenient, as you could go in there to use the bathroom or get a drink.  Two people in my family spent most of the time before launch sitting at a table and meeting new people, while the other two of us sat along the water.  The air conditioning in the restaurant was quite nice on a 95+ degree day though.

They did charge $10 to park there for the day, but it was worth it.

Ben Cooper's site is a great resource for this and has links of shots and videos from many locations and at varied times of the day.

I had a great experience with STS-107 (Columbia) booster return in 2003.  Of course, we didn't know at the time what would happen to Columbia two weeks later.  Unfortunately, my sister in law has the digitals so I can't attach.  We just happened to be riding through Port Canaveral 48 hrs after launch and saw the boosters in tow behind the "Freedom" ships.  I told my brother to continue driving on Mullet Road and this took us to the lock refered to above.  Once the ships arrive at the lock, they are docked and the boosters are attached to the sides of the ships to prevent damage as the lock is approx. 75' wide (this took 2 hours).  This also means your only about 13-15' as they go by.  Very impressive to see "loaded" stamped on each booster segment.  Hit and miss on the arrival time due to sea and retrieval conditions (usually 36-48 hours post launch).  On one launch last year, I went to the lock in the a.m. 2 days after launch and the lock folks said they had brought them in during the night.  Patience is the key here!  Good luck

Very nice photos, Jacq!!

astrobrian traveled to Florida for this launch, he's hanging out with Larry (lsullivan411).  They went to Playalinda Beach today, and have some absolutely great photography of Endeavour.

First image is Endeavour with the Blue Angels flying overhead, second is just Endeavour.  I was astonished by these.

Not possible to watch a launch from here.  Roads to Playalinda Beach are closed three days before a scheduled launch and I also believe the day of landings.

I believe that's the location of Spaceview Park.  Good location, but probably going to be packed, especially seeing as it's a Friday night.

Just go to Titusville and go down US1.  Pull in anywhere along the water that you can see the pads from.  View is good from pretty much anywhere in Titusville.

Just wanted to make sure that if I pull in any where on Titusville coast and can see the pads, will it still be as good as space view park?
Also just wondering if from Titusvill can you feel the rumble of of the SRB's igniting?

Thanks ;)

Yes...the distance is pretty much the same from anywhere along the river in Titusville.

You may not feel the rumble of the SRB's, but you'll hear them.  Because sound travels much slower than light, it'll take you a long time to hear them (about 50 seconds to a minute after launch).  If you're going to feel anything, it'll be then.  By then, the vehicle is almost at SRB sep.

If the water is still (no waves) I've heard you can see the rumble creating waves across the water.

I guess KCS visitor centre is going to be closed on Friday unless you have a viewing ticket. If launch is delayed to saturday and then sunday, will the visitor center remain closed to visits?

Yes, AFAIK the tickets for Friday would be the ones accepted for that day.

I believe that's the location of Spaceview Park.  Good location, but probably going to be packed, especially seeing as it's a Friday night.

Just go to Titusville and go down US1.  Pull in anywhere along the water that you can see the pads from.  View is good from pretty much anywhere in Titusville.

Just FYI, some places along US-1 will make you pay for parking.

Yup...I believe that I may have mentioned that in an earlier post.

During STS-118 most places seemed to charge between $5 and $10.  Reasonable to me as they want $25 to park at a football game around here...

By the time I got up to Titusville, there was actually no parking spaces left in Spaceview park (and this was about 4 hours before launch).  They were directing people to some field about a half mile away and you'd have to walk to and from your car (not bad, unless you wanted to keep going back and forth to it throughout the day as we did).

So it made more sense to pay the $10 and park close and be in a convienent location.

Question for you experts..

This is my first launch view ever, (LTT luckily). If there is a lot of clouds does that make the launch not as spectacular to view? Especially since it is a night launch, would we rather wait the 24, or 48 hours if it meant a better "view" of the shuttle? Does the ISS Shuttle go straigh up? Arched? Sorry for noob ?'s just my first time. Flight leaves tommorow AM.  cannot wait and thank you all...

No launch vehicle just goes "straight up". They form an arc as that's how you get into orbit, it's the horizontal velocity that matters the most, not the altitude. So in order to build up that horizontal velocity, you need to pitch-over which results in an arc-looking trajectory.

Yep...for ISS it arcs north.  Since ISS is 51.6 degree inclination, it's quite a bit north  (as opposed to around 28 degrees...which would be pretty much east).  Since you're looking west-east if you're in Titusville, or southwest-northeast if on the causeway, you'll see quite a bit of arc. It is also traveling east, but when looking west-east you can't really notice that.

Here's one of my pictures from STS-118 in Titusville to illustrate.

Very cool, it would be nice if we could get a real time track...but that is probably way too complicated.

Do you have any capability to calculate how far away MECO will be visible from?

I've seen sighting tracks in the past that put me either right on the edge of or outside of it (I'm in Buffalo NY).

I could get a very clear view of the low eastern sky.

Also...I see Chris now has a new thread for Launch/FD1.

I've witnessed MECO and ET separation low, below the tree line from the southern NC coast at Cape Lookout.  This was a similar night launch and was favored with extremely clear, post frontal skies.  If you have a low [<5 degree] horizon, I'd go fer it!  Binoculars a must, with a fast short tube scope preferred.

Best of luck,
Jeff

Sorry I can't find a copy right now, but a web site - I believe space.com, had a map of visibility of an ISS shuttle launch a few launches ago.  I've seen several night STS launches as a bright point of light low in the southeast from about T+5 min to MECO, from just north of NYC.  I think Buffalo, NY was at the edge of the visibility area.  An altavista image search may turn it up.

That's the visibility for a shuttle launch to the high-inclination ISS orbit (51.6 deg).  Non-ISS launches (e.g. to Hubble) go to low-inclination orbit (28.5 deg) and are much harder to see.

Postalworker, the view you describe was probably one of the latter.  This launch to ISS should be well up over the horizon for you.

Thanks for digging up the link...by the looks of it I'm right on the edge of the circle, maybe slightly outside it.  I've seen another similar image that puts me right on the edge of the circle (it extends just to about the shore of Lake Erie).

It would be very low for me...but I know of a spot where I have a very clear view to the east...probably only the first 2 degrees of the horizon are blocked.

How dim would it be though?  Would I have to be scanning the horizon with binoculars?  Seeing as how I'm much further than you people along the coast.

I doubt it. it fills up pretty early as that is a prime spot. But I'm not really sure since I'm usually watching it from the turn basin by the VAB. Sorry, just had to throw that in there :)

Heck, they don't even give many passes to the employees. We have a drawing every launch. I just happen to be working on Red Crew and re-entry tomorrow, or should I say later today.

You'll definitely hear it good, don't know if you'll feel the ground or not. Not sure how it is by the river. The launches that I'm not working, I'm usually watching at home on HDNet, then go outside when it gets some altitude.

Sold out for tomorrow but I've done other tours with these guys.  It's a kayak trip to watch the launch from Haulover Canal to the north of the pads.  You might call and see if you can get on the waiting list.  Also, to the NSF staff, this could be a good company to hit up for ads.

Thanks, and ditto on the HDNet coverage, then going outside to see it once it clears the trees where I'm at.  I can see the SRB's drop off without assistance.  The shots on HDNet when the ME's light and the orbiter tries to move before the SRB's light - fantastic :o

Wish I were there. Oh well. For future reference though, has anyone ever watched a launch from one of the boats of Indian River Queen? I got email from them saying there would be a launch cruise. Must be fun but I was told they only get to within 10 miles or so of the pad. So it isn't that much closer than watching from Titusville. Still, watching the liftoff, especially at night, as it reflects on the water, must be beautiful. I figure next time if I can't get a causeway pass I might try this and wonder if anyone else has done it in the past.

I have one (1) LTT available for my cost ($74.36).  I am staying at the Clarion (4951 S. Washington Ave. - Rte. 1) at (321) 269-2121.  Ask for David Zlowe (a guest).  I will be viewing from here, and so don't need it.  You'll get the full package I received, including parking pass, LTT, and VC admission, along with receipt and FAQ.  First person here with cash gets it; I'll meet you in the lobby after you call me when you are here; I'm leaving for lunch at 1300h and so no joy after that.  Note: parking pass requested showing up by 1100h, and it is after that.  If you don't know enough not to be concerned, then let's not get on the merry-go-round.  Either you know what you are getting, or you can watch it on TV.  Either way, enjoy the show!

Padrat...that is interesting...regarding a drawing for KSC workers to view the launch for those that are not "working it".

I always thought that "off duty" KSC employees could watch shuttle launches from the restricted areas without special passes.

We do, but it can be frowned upon. For one, we aren't supposed to use our badges for entry to the center for personal use. Second, one of the things that came out of the Columbia investigation was a re-evaluation of the danger at launch time to people watching on the space center. NASA decided to limit the risk as much as possible and set guidelines on the number of personel and civilians allowed to be on the center at launch. This is why it is so much harder to get launch passes for the causeway and turn basin these days, much smaller number available. But many of us employees are guilty of waiting over a few hours past our shift to watch launch :).

Can't blame anyone for sticking around after their shift to see history up close.

I did see the clouds open up when the shuttle went through.

Here are pictures of the launch. We drove to right before space view park and found this great spot. It was on this sea wall. Some people might know were I'm talking about. There was this great big building. I think we in the parking lot of it. But it was a great spot. We just sat on the sea wall and could see the pads and the VAB. It was kinda hard to take pictures before the launch of like the pad and the VAB because it was dark but it was great. We got there about an hour before launch because we hit more traffic than we expected coming from Tampa. They were just starting to get a lot of people. We managed to get right on the Sea wall. There were some small branches there but they were fine. I 'm posting my pictures now and a good video we took later. :)

Incredible - I can hardly describe it.  This was my second launch viewing (first night and first from Space View Park), and my wife's first.  We unfolded our chairs at SVP just after 3pm, and the astronauts hadn't even been taken to the pad yet.  The wait, while a long one, was made entirely enjoyable by the camaraderie with the people around us.  A great bunch of people and if any of you are reading this, I had the black John Force Racing t-shirt on  ;D
Once the final hold on the clock was released and the countdown resumed, the anticipation was unreal.  When the pad lit, the crowd went nuts and my God it was amazing.  To see it on a large HDTV is really nice, with all the great close up shots and sounds from the microphones.  However to experience the sheer beauty and raw power of a Shuttle launch, it goes without saying that it has to be seen in person and as close as you're allowed to get.  My wife doesn't have the interest in anything to do with space that I do, and while she's not a NASA detractor, she does understand why space exploration something we must do.  Any way, seeing and hearing the Shuttle that close brought her to tears.  It's guaranteed that we'll be at SVP once again on February 12th 2009.  8)

jacqmans, fellow Dutchman here (although I live in Canada); it was also my first launch experience, and I couldn't agree more, picking a night-launch was definitely the right thing to do! What an absolutely amazing experience. I was in Spaceview Park, great view from there as well, and we had a little more luck with the sound because the wind was blowing in our direction. All in all, worth the six-hour round trip from my condo in Ft. Lauderdale!

Ya I was coming from Tampa and going there it only took about 3 hours when normally it takes 2 hours. Going back was a different story. 5 Hours to get back to Tampa. Normally it takes 2hours. It took us 3 hours just to get out of Cape Canaveral area. It was basically dead stop traffic. But I must say it was well worth it. I personally have lived in Tampa 13 years (My Life Time) ;) and this was my first launch seen from Titusville. Normally you can see it a little from Tampa but nothing like you can from Space View Park Area. :)

Here are a few pictures I took from the launch.  We were down on the Causeway, towards the far end where all the buses were.  This was my first launch, it was an incredible experience!  Everyone had said to just watch the launch and not worry about pictures, so I just took a couple long exposure shots.

#0162 is from liftoff until about T+1:00 (held it open too long, but I was too busy enjoying the view)!
#0164 is from T+1:55 to T+2:40 --  you can see SRB Sep fairly clearly.  I'm not sure if the extra glow is from the SRBs burning out or from the SRB Separation Motors.  Towards the end of the trail you can see multiple trails as the SRBs fall away.

Can't wait to go back and do it again.

Watched the launch from the VC, it was amazing! Came all the way from Ireland for the launch so I was trilled it went on time. One problem I had with the VC viewing is they had no audio of the countdown for anyone watching on the large screen at the side of the Launch Experience building. I had to move back next to the Explorer orbiter mockup to hear anything. This surprissed me as it is hardly the first time they covered a launch. Not impressed at all with that.

That's too bad; the view of the orbiter on final to Runway 22 from the public site was spectacular the one time I got to see it.  (Touchdown itself, not so much.)
