THALES ALENIA SPACE TO BUILD STATE-OF-THE-ART ASTRA 1P AND ASTRA 1Q SATELLITES FOR SES
18 NOV 2021

Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), announced that it has signed a contract with SES to deliver 2 Ku-band geostationary satellites, ASTRA 1P and ASTRA 1Q to serve SES’s major European broadcasters’ content distribution operations as well as deliver connectivity services over Europe at 19.2°E.

ASTRA 1P, a classic wide-beam satellite, will support SES’s prime TV neighbourhood and enable content owners, private and public broadcasters across Germany, France and Spain to continue broadcasting satellite TV channels in the highest-picture quality in the most cost-efficient manner. It will be based on the full electric and powerful Spacebus NEO platform developed by Thales Alenia Space and already flight proven in orbit.

Cannes' know-how in geostationary orbit
25/10/2023

The Astra 1P satellite, currently being assembled at Thales Alenia Space's premises in the Cité des Festivals, will be sent into space in the second half of 2 from Florida.

The expert hands of Thales Alenia Space's Cannes site are currently hard at work finalizing the Astra 1P wide-beam telecommunications satellite. This work is intended for SES, a major telecommunications operator based in Luxembourg.

[...]

Intended to replace three satellites, and planned for about fifteen years of use, the structure is based on the powerful 100% electric Spacebus NEO platform, designed and developed by Thales Alenia Space. It has already proven itself in orbit, with six satellites in operation, including SES-17 for SES. ASTRA 1P aims to strengthen SES's leading TV position, offering extended coverage to countries such as Germany, Spain and France. Since the signing of the contract between SES and Thales Alenia Space, the project has come a long way.

"A large module assembled in Toulouse and another, smaller one, assembled at the Cannes site, were grouped together a few weeks ago. The satellite will be finalized in the second quarter of 2024, for a launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket in the summer, from Cape Canaveral in Florida," said Jean-Michel Bretagne, project manager of the Astra 1P satellite.

[...]

With a launch mass of about five tonnes and a height of nearly seven metres, the satellite reaches 45 metres after the deployment of the solar panels. "The power of the 20kW payload will make Astra 1P one of the most powerful satellites in geosynchronous orbit," said Florent Bire, Assembly, Integration and Test Manager for Astra 1P at Thales Alenia Space.

At 0:36, the satellite is named SES-24, so the satellite will be dual-designated:
