SPACEX IS AWARDED LAUNCH OF GERMAN RADAR RECONNAISSANCE SATELLITE SYSTEM

Falcon 9 rocket will deliver three-satellite SARah Constellation that will serve German Ministry of Defense

Hawthorne, CA – Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) will provide the launch services for Germany’s second-generation radar reconnaissance satellite system. The satellites, provided by OHB System AG and Astrium GmbH, will replace the current constellation and will be delivered to orbit by two Falcon 9 rockets in 2018 and 2019.

"SpaceX looks forward to working with OHB and Astrium, and we appreciate their confidence in SpaceX to reliably deliver these satellites to orbit,” said Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX President and COO. “These missions are very meaningful for SpaceX as the first contracted for a European government.”

OHB will build two passive-antenna synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites, and Astrium GmbH will build a larger, phased-array-antenna satellite under contract for OHB. The three-satellite constellation will replace the current OHB-built five-satellite SAR-Lupe constellation.

The SARah 2/3 passive radar imaging satellites are being built for the German government by OHB as part of the three satellite SARah constellation, a follow-up to the SAR-Lupe radar sat constellation.  The SARah 1 satellite is being constructed by Airbus.  The SARah 2/3 satellites will mass about 1800 kg each.

Do we know approximately when these satellites will launch?

I have read Q3 and NET September, which have some overlap.

The two SARah radar satellites realized by OHB are currently close to completion and will also be launched into their target orbit in the near future. These are based on a further development of the reflector technology of the SAR-Lupe constellation. SAR-Lupe is the Federal Armed Forces' first space-based reconnaissance system and has been operated by OHB System in cooperation with OHB Digital Connect for 15 years.

This zone off the Mexican shore is a funny shape for a fairing recovery, but its alignment is consistent with a roughly 90 deg orbit inclination, as is the long axis of the stage 2 zone found by Ken the Bin (thanks!). The leading edges of the hazard times for launch and stage 2 are 104 min apart; trailing edges are 109 min apart.

These are the launch hazard windows for SARah

The weather currently on the California coast this week is the result of a cut-off low, which means that it meanders and could potentially stall before moving on eastward.

I received NGA Space Debris notice. It looks like it might be effectively a Rocket Launching notice for this launch, but it runs from December 22 to 26, which would mean a one-day postponement.

Thoughts?

Pretty sure this is SARah 2&3 being transported to 4E today? Im unfamiliar with payload processing out at vandenburg and the route a payload like this would take from encapsulation to the launch site.

Maps from the NGA notices. The effective Rocket Launching notice aligns with the predicted 88.2° inclination.

Edit:

This notice from the USCG District 11 weekly Local Notice to Mariners that came out today still has December 21. Times are PST; add 8 hours for UTC.

Added area A to the LHA map.

The interleaving of their launch times existed a few days ago. Surely the range administration would ensure both companies knew about it, while also deconflicting the VSFB staff.

I figure both companies will react to the weather, which has some wind in it. Might be a double-launch Friday!

Fresh NOTAMs just out showing the launch slipping to December 23 (back-up days post-Christmas, December 27-30). This should allow for Firefly next door to re-attempt launching on the 22nd which seems to have better weather forecasts than today or tomorrow.

Which first stage will be used for this launch?  (semi-rhetorical question)

The May 16 press briefing revealed Falcon 9 first stages are now cleared for use up to twenty times for Starlink launches.  However, as of the Project 425 rideshare launch, non-Starlink launches apparently qualify as well.

Available first stages, with UTC date of most recent recovery:
1075.8     Oct 29
1063.16   Nov 20
1082.1     new Starlink 7-9

Edit December 23: It's B1075.8.

The first cancel-and-replace NGA Space Debris notice listed above, the one that is effectively a Rocket Launching notice erroneously has the same location information as the second notice, which  is for the second stage reentry.

This new cancel-and-replace NGA notice corrects that.

Of course.

Vandy team feels like something may be amiss and they choose to take 24 hours to double check (or maybe triple check) everything.

Yeah SARah-2 payload fairing and B1075 as the booster. Interestingly, the second stage is a Starlink one as it has the velcro pads for the tension rods. It must have been reassigned for this mission in the flurry of delays they've had in the last few weeks out from Vandy.

Offline wjbarnett

Alex, could you highlight the location of these velco pads? TIA

I wonder if they kept the standard mvac as well, or swapped it out with a shorty

Total payload mass is 3.6 tons (1.8 tons for each satellite), which is well within the margins for direct insertion combined with Stage 1 RTLS. Probably logical to use the stubby M-Vac nozzle.

SpaceX is targeting Sunday, December 24 for a Falcon 9 launch of the SARah-2 mission to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The 83-minute launch window opens at 5:11 a.m. PT.

A live webcast of this mission will begin on X @SpaceX about 15 minutes prior to liftoff. Watch live.

This is the eighth flight of the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched SDA-0A and six Starlink missions. Following stage separation, the first stage will land on Landing Zone 4 (LZ-4) at Vandenberg Space Force Base.

For the last picture: GOES-West CONUS - Air Mass
legend for AirMass RBG
Key for AirMass RGB:
1 - Jet stream / potential vorticity (PV) / deformation zones / dry upper level (dark red / orange)
2 - Cold air mass (dark blue/purple)
3 - Warm air mass (green)
4 - Warm air mass, less moisture (olive/dark orange)
5 - High thick cloud (white)
6 - Mid level cloud (tan/salmon)
7 - Low level cloud (green, dark blue)
8 - Limb effects (purple/blue)

Quote
Air Mass RGB is used to diagnose the environment surrounding synoptic systems by enhancing temperature and moisture characteristics of airmasses. Cyclogenesis can be inferred by the identification of warm, dry, ozone-rich descending stratospheric air associated with jet streams and potential vorticity (PV) anomalies. The RGB can be used to validate the location of PV anomalies in model data. Additionally, this RGB can distinguish between polar and tropical airmasses, especially along upper-level frontal boundaries and identify high-, mid-, and low-level clouds.

Nice job, Tony!

Good of you to give Steven the night off, as it's Christmas in Adelaide in 10 minutes.

Merry Christmas to all, and Congrats to SpaceX.

--Pete

I wasn't expecting to do that, I'm actually supposed to be asleep (5 a.m. here).  I decided to do this anyway.  Nice to give Steven a rest.  The last time I did Live coverage was way back in the Sea Launch era when I was a small kitten.

Best to you Perchlorate and have a Merry Christmas.

I'm headed to bed, will post the Spece Dev re-broadcast when it's made available.

Best
Tony (meow)

What was the "stand by" and later zulu time reads in the nets? I don't remember hearing them before.

I called it.

I knew the stubby M-Vac nozzle would be used for this mission.

It's was hard to see, but yes.

Both SARah satellites should've been deployed by now.

Mission timeline says the payload separation sequence should end at the 25 minute, 6 second mark.

Some reusability stats for this launch (SARah 2/3):

Booster B1075.8 turnaround time: 56 days 4 hours 11 minutes
(its previous mission was Starlink Group 7-6 on Oct 29, 2023 UTC).

FYI: median turnaround time for Falcon 9 / Heavy boosters is currently 49.21 days *
* – based on the last 30 launches, excluding new first stages.

Launchpad SLC-4E turnaround time: 16 days 5 hours 8 minutes
(the previous launch from this pad was Starlink Group 7-8 on Dec 8, 2023 UTC).

FYI: median turnaround time for SLC-4E is currently 12.88 days *
* – based on the last 30 launches.

The same type of stats for previous SpaceX launches may be found on this spreadsheet online.

Apparently, launch was on the minute, at :00 seconds.  (Bill Harwood drops the seconds in his tweets when the launch is on the :00 seconds, assuming launch time to the second is known.)

F9/SARah-2: This will be the 96th F9 launch of '23 and the 284th single-stick F9 flight overall; booster B1075 is making its 8th flight; a successful return-to-launch-site landing would be SpaceX's 15th at Vandenberg and its 256th overall

Edit to add: I think Bill has his numbers muddled - it’s the 90th F9 launch this year, 94th Falcon launch (including FH)

I set my alarm and watched this from my perch appx 145 miles east of Vandenberg.

First time I saw boostback! The cauliflower of S1 exhaust fighting the thin atmosphere was amazing. Entry burn was plainly visible, with a very high angular rate of travel.

5 min in, S2 rose into sunlight. At SECO1, the plume dominated the southern sky.  I followed the stage almost to horizon. The whole thing looked like a woodcut of a great comet in the 17th century.

Photos look better in a dark place.

HVM,
I heard both very loud and clear,  The "Stand by" caused me to get a chill, I have no idea what it meant, and the "First Motion Time" was also very clear, I don't remember ever hearing that but perhaps there was little chatter on the launch coms last night the person voice carried well.  The "First motion Zulu Time" correlates to William Harword's Twitter post that FST posted above.  At least he is on his toes.

Thanks for asking,
Tony

aporigine ,
amazing shots since the trajectory is so much further away than most of the Starlink launches (which are not RTLS). I could have taken some myself (live just by LAX) but I was busy posting.
Best, Tony.

Are those all Starlink satellites criscrossing the sky in the Stage 2 blowdown video above? I haven't seen a video like that before!
