If anybody is a little nervous about flying on a Starship, I suggest a tuk tuk ride in Cambodia. Everything else will feel safe after that.
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who couldn't hear the music.

With lots of talk about the Amazon Kuiper constellation, and Kuiper on SpaceX Falcons, I keep smiling about the American pronunciation based on the none existing vowel "ui" in American English.

As this is the party thread, can we do a drinking game somewhere based on the Dutch judges decide you got it wrong, you take a shot? :) I can bring the Jenever (Gin).

PS: Maybe I am just looking for a drink ;) but the proper discussion of "Kuiper" pronunciation is included below based on my phonetics transcriptions. Cheers

While most of you know that the Amazon "Kuiper" constellation is named after the Dutch/American astronomer Gerard Kuiper, only a few of you might have wondered how that "ui" is actually pronounced. It is interesting that Amazon would choose a name that would be pronounced very different in American vs the original Dutch. Then again, makes no difference for 99% of the Americans of course. And a discussion of "How to pronounce Kuiper?" also is reminiscent of metric vs imperial discussion.

Gerard Peter Kuiper (/ˈkaɪpər/ KY-pər; born Gerrit Pieter Kuiper, Dutch: [ˈɣɛrɪt ˈpitər ˈkypər]; [/url] Bold is mine and the funny transcriptions are International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) btw. As the diphtong "ui" does not exist in American, I have heard pronunciations between "keeper" and "cooper".

For comparison, as my best guesses of English word vs Phonetic vs transcript, we have:

Word   Phonetic transcript
-----------------------------
keeper  'kiper  or  kipər or possibly kypar
cooper  'kuper or    kupər
kuiper  'kyper  (in Dutch)

If you like soccer then you know about Johan Cruijf which is the same "ui" as in Kuiper.

There are several IPA readers on the web. cut the IPA  (the stuff between the slashes) /ˈkaɪpər/ or maybe /ˈkypər/ for a more dutch pronounciation. Then paste it into the IPA reader and listen.

Or, just drink enough IPA and you won't care.

Though I prefer German Hefeweizen, that is an excellent point to make :) Thanks.

Did that last night. But nowhere near that little section off the river where all the pubs are.

I also got to check "Having my hotel closed down because somebody there had Monkeypox" off my list of things to do.

Sometimes I wonder about exporting humanity to other worlds.
Then I find myself in the middle of 50 drunk Laotians dancing to YMCA and think, ah, they're OK.

Just go easy on the sambal or your tuk-tuk experience will seem easy in comparison ;)

Sambal can be arbitrarily hot so yeah, watch out.

Sounds like a line from a John Lennon/Elon Musk 2024 parody duet. 🎵 🤔 🤣
Imagine if SpaceX posted information about a Starlink mission just before the poll for prop load.

Last launches of '23 and first of '24 go into the books as (respectively): FH x Starlink >3h evening doubleheader and sunset F9 RTLS. So glad i moved to the Space Coast just in time to get absolutely spoiled.
