Mission X Continues: Announcing Successful Launch and Control of Jackal [Dec 21]

Quote
On December 21, True Anomaly began its second mission, Mission X-2, launching its Jackal Autonomous Orbital Vehicle (AOV) into orbit aboard the Bandwagon-2 rideshare mission with SpaceX. Just nine months since our first mission, our team of engineers, designers, and production technicians assembled our second-iteration Jackal spacecraft, at a fraction of the price of legacy systems, while incorporating product improvements and learnings from our first launch in March 2024.

Mission X is the launch and operational demonstration of Jackal, True Anomaly’s first spacecraft purpose-built for the space superiority market. True Anomaly executes continuous product upgrades through orbital flight tests to ensure that Jackal maintains its operational edge. Mission X-2 flight is focused on characterizing and expanding Jackal’s maneuverability, object characterization, and tracking performance envelope – capabilities that set Jackal apart from both exquisite and commodity spacecraft.

During our prep and execution of MX-2 to date, we have achieved the following:

 • Rapid upgrade, manufacturing, and test of our third Jackal spacecraft in 9 months since our last flight. Upgrades included improvements to the electrical power subsystem, test infrastructure, enhanced fault detection, expanded end-to-end testing with added modems and sites, and an upgraded Mosaic for improved scheduling, orbit determination, and data fusion
 • Successful completion of qualification, functional testing, fueling, and mating to the SpaceX Rideshare plate within 48 hours of arrival to Vandenberg Space Force Base
 • Successful deployment from the launch vehicle
 • Automated attitude stabilization
 • Automated sun seeking and deployment of solar array and onboard battery charging
 • Successful contact, data transfer, and command between True Anomaly Flight Command and Jackal, via our Mosaic software platform
 • Successful integration of and automated data transfer from multiple ground station providers
 • Start of our Test and Check Out (TACO) procedures

Over the next month, we will continue to conduct on-orbit functional testing with Mosaic, our autonomy and mission command and control software platform. This testing will include, among other things, powering up and operating onboard cameras and thrusters, and maneuvering within Low Earth Orbit.

Looks like that deployer in front would have CTC-0 on the bottom, and two slots with 8U of space on the top? Has ONDO Space and CroCube logos on top, Endurosat and something on bottom.

https://x.com/Exolaunch/status/1870136990177366190

It might be a mission patch with stars and the Earth in the background.

One minor mystery solved.

What's the logo between Sidus and Spacemanic?

Still trying to figure out if GITAI was handled by Exolaunch or Arrow.  Maverick handled Tommorrow.io?  That would be the pair of 6U deployers. Wasn't thinking Exolaunch had Pleiades-Orpheus but apparently they did.

ICEYE expands its Earth Observation capabilities with launch of two SAR satellites for mid-inclination orbit on the Bandwagon-2 mission with SpaceX [Dec 21]

Quote
ICEYE, the global leader in SAR satellite operations for Earth Observation and persistent monitoring, announced today that it has launched two new satellites to its constellation of SAR satellites. Both satellites expand the availability of ICEYE’s latest imaging technology to deliver additional 25 cm imaging capacity. The satellites were integrated via Exolaunch and launched as part of the Bandwagon-2 rideshare mission with SpaceX from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA. Both satellites have established communication, and early routine operations are underway. With today’s launch, ICEYE has successfully launched 40 satellites into orbit since 2018, with nine satellites launched in 2024 alone.

The new SAR satellites were launched into mid-inclination orbits; compared to a polar orbit, these mid-inclination orbits provide more than twice the collection opportunities at middle latitudes of the globe. ICEYE customers have many areas of interest in these middle latitudes (+/- 45 degrees), and these customers will benefit from increased persistence over these regions. Customers with imaging interests outside these middle latitudes will continue to benefit from the frequent revisit enabled by ICEYE’s dozens of satellites in polar orbits. ICEYE’s unique mix of mid-inclination and polar orbits provides its customers with deep revisit capabilities for targets all around the globe. The new satellites will serve ICEYE's commercial missions as part of the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation owned and operated by ICEYE.

Second satellite of Korea “425 Project” constellation successfully launched [Dec 23]

Quote
The second Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite of Korea 425 Project constellation was successfully launched this weekend aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Thales Alenia Space's contributes to this program cooperating with Korean Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Hanwha Systems Corporation (HSC), for the Korean Agency for Defence and Development (ADD) as the prime developer.

Our contribution extends to the supply of our high-performance Synthetic Aperture RADAR (SAR) that utilizes an innovative antenna consisting of a large deployable reflector with 24 deployable petals and an active feed array. Another significant part of our contribution is the acquisition, storage, and data retransmission system on the ground. The high agility of the “dancing satellite” is guarantee by the innovative Attitute and Orbit Control System, also provided by Thales Alenia Space. These advanced technologies enable high-performance observation and surveillance capabilities, critical to the success of the program.

“I am delighted with the successful launch of the second satellite of Korea 425 Project constellation, confirming Thales Alenia Space’s long-standing expertise in the design, development and construction of Earth observation satellites,” said Giampiero Di Paolo, Deputy CEO and Senior Executive Vice President, Observation, Exploration and Navigation at Thales Alenia Space. “We certainly remain focused on the important stages of the program planned for the coming months, already thinking about the launch of the third and fourth satellites, demonstrating our constant commitment to excellence and the desire to exploit the unlimited potential that awaits us.”

I've got 15 cubesats with a total of 17U for Exolaunch, which seems odd.  That would put 1U in a deployer by itself?  There also has to be another deployer somewhere on the stack.

Go Beyond departed PoLB on Dec 15 @ 4:46pm PT

Go Beyond returned to PoLB on Dec 18 @ 6:33pm PT

Go Beyond departed PoLB on Dec 19 @ 8:03am PT

Looks like Go Beyond arrived in Oakland sometime before Dec 21 @ 10am PT.  Unclear who is leading fairing recovery for this mission.

Quick Update on Ondosat-OWL and Pleiades-Orpheus

Ondosat-OWL:
Of the 10 Ondosat-OWL satellites launched, we have successfully received signals from 6.
We are still awaiting contact with Ondosat-OWL 6, 8, 11 and 12.

Pleiades-Orpheus:
We have received Pleiades-Orpheus from Bronco Space Lab.
Unfortunately, a bug has resulted in a lower-than-expected transmit power (20dBm/100mW) compared to the planned 30dBm/1000mW.
The team at California State Polytechnic University will be experimenting with the engineering model to develop a plan for commanding an update in the coming days.
Until then, only the more sensitive ground stations will be able to receive signals from Pleiades-Orpheus.

Thank you, tinyGS, for the updates.

Hear, hear!

So what's the deal with the Think Orbital payload? As far as I can tell, TO F1 in May 2024
was a suborbital attached payload on the F9 first stage (because they say they recovered it the same day). The pics of this one in the factory look similar, two big drums, but TS' Celestrak list implies it is a free flyer this time. Does anyone have any insight?

Free flyer, battery only, will be defunct a day or so after launch. Run experiment, send back results over Iridium, done.
