Cape Canaveral/KSC Hidden Gems?
« on: 02/28/2018 05:08 pm »
I've done my rounds to the typical historic space program sites on the Space Coast. The KSC Visitor Center, American Space Museum, and the Air Force Missiles & Space Museum are all great for NASA history junkies. Being an employee on the Cape, I've also been able to go around to many of the old launch complexes (Mercury, Atlas, Gemini, Vanguard, etc.) and the site of the original Mercury Mission Control. My favorite has been walking along the beach out front of the Astronaut's Beach House. What/where are some lesser known, or less obvious, historic locations at CCAFS/KSC?

It's also frustrating that living in Brevard County that aren't many places to see and/or buy space memorabilia/artifacts. I've spent a lot of time at Antique Malls in Titusville and Cocoa without much luck. Any suggestions on where to find items like this?

Being " cheeky" here, (as I've reached 71 😁)  but its time to sell off the rest of my remaining spaceflight memorabilia and artefacts that includes Mercury /Gemini /Apollo /Shuttle et al items , as well as some Russian items.

Many these been exhibited at prestige museums in UK over past 50 years.

Also, lots of historic NASA early documents , early books (,etc. Some collectible pin badges/cloth badges etc)

If you want email me offline line - let me know your interest/s and any budget limit for items and I'll reply with a list of items suit your budget😁

Do you know anything about the current state of Hangar S and all the old equipment/materials from its years as the Manned Spaceflight Center?

It was used for many other purposes since the such as shuttle/ELV payload processing, shuttle SCAPE training, SpaceX pad erector build, etc.  It no longer has any ties to its use for Mercury.

BTW, Manned Spacecraft Center was the former name of the Johnson Space Center in Houston.  Hangar S was base operations at the Cape.  The actual name of the group in Hangar S was Mercury Field Operations and then MSC Atlantic Missile Range operations and finally MSC Florida Operations before being taken over by KSC.
