The correct mass og the Saturn 5 and N1 ??
« on: 05/13/2007 10:30 pm »
Hello there!

Does anybody know the correct mass of those two rockets?

When I do a search on the internet or look in books the Saturn 5's mass was anywhere between 2800 metric tons and 3050 metric tons - whats that all about? The Space Shuttle stack always has a mass of just over 2000 metric tons - no matter where you look.

About the N1. I did a searh a few months back and found pretty consistent that it's mass was just about 2400 metric tons. When I look it up now, it says 2735 metric tons exactly everywhere I look - this seems VERY strange!!!

What IS the correct mass of those rockets? - or rather was ;)

For the Saturn-V, you could do a lot worse than looking up "Apollo by the numbers" on Google.   All the data is accurate and you should be able to work out all the bits you need to.

Look it up on astronautix.com, or wikipedia.
That's better than nothing, but the problem is the data in those sources is of unknown authenticity. Trying to get a definitive, authoritative mass/thrust number for a given N1 launch is difficult.

Ideally what he wants is the N1 equivalent to the Saturn V Launch Vehicle Flight Evaluation Reports, which meticulously documented various details about each flight, including thrust, mass history of each stage, etc. Unfortunately I don't know if such a thing exists for the N1, or where it would be. Also, it's likely not in English.
