Any word on the STS-120 EVA content?
« on: 08/20/2007 12:28 am »
NASA must have a pretty good idea, although some details will change now that they know exactly what STS-118 was able to accomplish. Have they released any info about what they will cover?

Major tasks are:

- Node 2 install
- P6 relocation (release all connections and reconnect)
- Return of the failed SASA from Z1
- Stowing new MBSU on ESP-2

I would like to point out that a fourth EVA has been added to STS-120.  Whitson and Malenchenko will do it.  I assume the EVA will prepare PMA-2 to be moved to Node 2.

I assume the EVA will prepare PMA-2 to be moved to Node 2.

Question is: How much of this can be done with the shuttle docked at PMA-2? What cable connections can be released etc.?

Discovery will dock to PMA-3 which will be attached to the nadir CBM on Unity.

When was that decided?  Can an orbiter can dock to a PMA at Node 1 nadir right now?

Don't think so.

Discovery will dock to PMA2, transfer N2 to N1, opposite Quest, with PMA3 relocated to N1 /nadir.

Connections will be made for N2 keep alive. After orbiter undocking, PMA2 will be moved to the forward facing port on N2 via SSRMS, then the N2/PMA2 stack will be moved from N1 to the now vacant port on the front of Destiny.

FYI some of this has already been covered in a recent thread...linking specifically to Jorge's post on clearance issues with Node 1 nadir:

Do any of the esteemed sources out there have access to or a link to any nifty 3D movies showing the EVA sequences yet?  Seeing that there appear to be some questions revolving around just how the heck this is all going to come off, a little help for the more spatially-challenged among us (myself included) would be most welcome!

Thanks in advance!

They are on L2.

Node 2 will be installed at Node-1 port by SSRMS (PMA-3 will go to Node-1 nadir Aug 30th), EVA-1.

P6 will be taken by the SSRMS, handed to the SRMS, staying at the SRMS overnight, MBS with the SSRMS translates to P3 overnight (to most outboard worksite possible), next day SSRMS takes P6 from SRMS and puts it at P5. Back to back EVAs-2 and -3 will be done to release connections to Z1 and attach them to P5 the next day.

I appreciate the feedback, but I was unable to locate any 3D movies of ISS sequence 10A inside L2 (or anywhere else for that matter).  There are a number of movies of ISS 13A, as an example of what I was hoping to see.  Can you provide a link?

Thanks!

Here has been some link but not related with topic so it's removed.
My request to moderator to remove my post.

It was my fault. I didn't read the topic. Sorry.

That wasn't L2 for the full ISS assembly video, it was on the general section of the open site, which I believe is now provided again in the post above.

I found the overall assembly video in the general section, and it's really good, but I was hoping for something like the ones Jester published earlier.

I'll just wait and watch.  Thanks!

Discovery will dock to PMA-3 which will be attached to the nadir CBM on Unity.

Uh, can you provide a source for that?  Granted, a shuttle might be able to dock to PMA-3 where it is now, although it would be tight and awkward.  But after August 30 PMA-3 will be at Unity Nadir.  There is no clearance, with the Soyuz in the way.  Also, from that position, Destiny would be in the way, making removal of Node 2 from the PLB impossible.  (also, minor issues like clearance for the UHF antenna, etc...)

BTW:  with it almost being September now, and with late-September/early October prep for the arrival of Expedition 16, I expect a stage EVA somewhere in mid-September for the remaining Stage 13A.1 EVA tasks...

EDIT: Stage EVA prediction...

You're correct. Docking port for STS-120 is PMA-2. I don't know where I got the PMA-3 data from.

STS-120 will dock at PMA-2.

I do not expect a stage EVA, all tasks not done are low priority.

During STS-118 EVA-4, PAO said the undone tasks would be deferred to a stage EVA.  He may indicate the current thinking on that, or it may just be speculation.  Anyway, I believe the only task of concern left on P6 before the move is the relocation of a toolbox to a CETA cart.

If I remember correctly, this toolbox is on Z1 or Node-1, not on P6. But I could be wrong.
