Contracts, designs, timelines of SDLV
« on: 12/09/2005 05:34 pm »
I'm hoping to hear something, anything that is being planned or presented as the first step of giving contracts out and designs to be made of anything to do with the SDLV.

Or is it all literally just on a conceptual stage of drawings on documents?

The five segs for the SDLV?

ATK have been working on those 5-segs purely internally since 1998 as an upgrade for STS.   They were never actually commissioned though, but ATK continues to work on them, paid for through their own internal budget.

What they have now is the contract to do all the re-development work to convert the current 4-segment Shuttle SRB's into the first stage of "The Stick" Crew Launch Vehicle for the CEV.

Here's the article: http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?id=4121

They are almost guaranteed to eventually get the contract for the 5-segs planned for the SDLV, but only once some money is released to start work on the SDLV - and that money will come from the annual money currently spent flying STS - or more specifically that money becomes available only after STS has been retired.

And all we're seeing in public is what is being sanctioned for release.   Behind closed doors you shoudl expect things to be about a year ahead of what we're getting to see.

I'm wondering if anything has changed since I posted this, especially since the ESAS and Lockheed Martin and ATK Thiokol getting some work on the CLV?

No, and I don't see how for some time. It's all about the CEV for now.

And CEV to the Moon only right now. The opposite of Kraisee's accelerated plan seems to be happening with the SDLVs.
Let's go and explore space.

Yep.   The simple fact is that there isn't ANY money to do serious development work on the SDLV until Shuttle is retired and its budget can be redirected - no matter which plan you're using.

All the Accelerated Plan really does is do the change-over in 2006, not 2011.
