MEDIA ADVISORY M23-067

NASA to Provide Briefing, Coverage of Spacewalks for Station Upgrades

Two NASA astronauts aboard the International Space Station will conduct a pair of spacewalks Friday, June 9, and Thursday, June 15, to install two new solar arrays.

NASA will discuss the upcoming spacewalks during a news conference at 12 p.m. EDT Thursday, June 1. Live coverage of the news conference and spacewalks will air on NASA Television, the NASA app, and the agencyís website.

News conference participants are:

Dina Contella, operations integration manager, International Space Station Program, NASAís Johnson Space Center in Houston
Diane Dailey, spacewalk flight director, NASA Johnson
Megan Shutilka, spacewalk officer, NASA Johnson

U.S. media interested in participating in person must contact the Johnson newsroom no later than 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 31, by calling 281-483-5111 or emailing [email protected]. To ask questions, reporters must dial into the news conference no later than 11:45 a.m., June 1. Questions also may be submitted on social media using #AskNASA.

Each spacewalk is scheduled to begin at 9:15 a.m. and last about six-and-a-half hours with NASA coverage beginning at 7:45 a.m.

On June 9, NASA astronauts Steve Bowen and Woody Hoburg will exit the stationís Quest airlock to install an upgraded IROSA (International Space Station Roll-Out Solar Array) on the 1A power channel on the starboard truss of the station.

Bowen will serve as extravehicular activity (EVA) crew member 1 and will wear a suit with red stripes. Hoburg will serve as extravehicular crew member 2 and will wear an unmarked suit. U.S. EVA 87 will be the ninth spacewalk for Bowen and the first for Hoburg.

On June 15, the same pair of astronauts will install an IROSA on the 1B power channel on the starboard truss. Assignments for U.S. EVA 88 will be determined at a later date.

The spacewalks will see the fifth and sixth IROSAs mounted to the existing station solar arrays. The new arrays are 60 feet long by 20 feet wide (18.2 meters by 6 meters) and will shade a little more than half of the original arrays, which are 112 feet long by 39 feet wide. The seventh and eighth IROSAs will be installed on future spacewalks. Each new IROSA will produce more than 20 kilowatts of electricity, and once all eight are installed, will enable a 30% increase in power production over the stationís current arrays.

I know it had been discussed, but is this the first official confirmation that they'll be installing iROSAs on all 8 power channels?

Imformally yes, it was pending the Russian extension decision. These were formerly to be ground stored flight spares.

During maintenance in the airlock, the EMUs were ID'd as 3004 and 3013

3004 for Hoburg and 3013 for Bowen. 3004 is with an M HUT and an XL for 3013

The SSRMS is in a semi-stowed position near Dragon and it did not remove the IROSAs as far as I can tell.  With the EVA tomorrow, I wonder if something went wrong during the removal process...

I think there were removed from the trunk today.  See this thread and the post going forward>

NASA TV coverage has begun! Bowen and Hoburg are currently doing the mandatory in-suit light exercise to help purge dissolved nitrogen from their blood.

Edit - added an overview image showing where the two new iROSA solar arrays are going. 1A is being installed on this spacewalk, 1B on the next.

Sultan al Neyadi is also in the airlock, helping the crew strap on the tools they'll need during today's spacewalk - including everyone's favorite electric screwdriver, the Pistol Grip Tool (PGT). (I still think Home Depot should sell a mock-up for space nerd DIY types...)

A note about those IPads being used.  Ground controllers originally intended to load patches/updates Wednesday night to both the primary (duty) and backup (personal use) Ipads for the entire crew.  The US crew strongly requested that the updates be delayed until after the EVA because recent updates invariably lead to inoperative/degraded functionality.  A compromise was reached where the backup IPads were updated yesterday and the primaries (in use right now) will be updated tonight, after the EVA

Getting the SAFERs installed. Good view of the red stripes on EV-1, Steve Bowen's, EMU.

(Edit - SAFER 15 for Bowen, SAFER 13 for Hoburg.)

Finishing up with Hoburg and getting him stationed in the crew lock along with Bowen. (Random question - I wonder when the MLI came off that one bare metal part on Hoburg's helmet lights?)

Crew lock hatch closed at about 1250 UTC, just as they go into a ~12 minute Ku-band LOS.

(and on my end - expected loss of signal, my apartment)

TDRS-8 (Z) continues communicating through the Canberra DSN site since the Typhoon strike on Guam.  Frequent 10-14 minute LOS' during what would normally be TDRS-Z passes should probably be expected.
