Our Crew-7 mission patch is something deeply meaningful to me. I hope it is as meaningful and symbolic to each individual at @NASA
 @esa
 @JAXA_jp
 @roscosmos
 @SpaceX
, as well as all our family and friends who have contributed to our upcoming Crew-7 mission to the @Space_Station
! Please see below for our patch description. Go #Crew7!!

Central to the Crew-7 patch is the colorful Earth, with its beauty and magnificence standing out against the white dragon and black background.

The caring dragon holds the Earth protectively, highlighting that every aspect of Crew-7’s long-duration mission is ultimately for the benefit of our home planet and those on it. The dragon is a shoutout to the namesake of the Crew Dragon capsule delivering the crew of four to and from the International Space Station. The dragon is on guard for threats against the Earth, its neck craned in the shape of a “7” to represent the seventh operational flight of the Crew Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station.

The dragon’s tail curves upwards towards a golden star, symbolizing the ascent towards the stars in honor of the pioneering spirit and perseverance that continue to propel us further in human space exploration.

The colors blue, white, and red on the tail symbolize the international make-up of the four crew members, with the colors encompassing those used in the flags of all four nations – the United States of America, Denmark, Japan, and the Russian Federation.

The crew is proud to represent the progress that can be achieved for all of humanity when we work together in unity. The Crew-7 astronauts would like to dedicate this patch to all those who contributed to the success of the Crew-7 mission, especially their families, and to the next generation of explorers.

Mission Specialist Assigned to Crew-7 Space Station Mission

Leah Cheshier Posted on June 16, 2023

The final crew member for NASA’s SpaceX Crew-7 mission, currently targeted to launch to the International Space Station in mid-August, has been announced.

Roscosmos cosmonaut Konstantin Borisov will fly as a mission specialist on SpaceX’s seventh rotational mission to the orbiting laboratory for NASA.

Borisov joins previously named crew members NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Andreas Mogensen, and astronaut Satoshi Furukawa from JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency).

This will be the first spaceflight for Borisov, who entered the Roscosmos Cosmonaut Corps as a test cosmonaut candidate in 2018.

A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket will launch Crew-7 aboard a Dragon spacecraft, named Endurance, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The spacecraft previously flew NASA’s SpaceX Crew-3 and Crew-5 missions.

NASA and Roscosmos fly integrated crews on U.S. crew spacecraft and on the Soyuz spacecraft to ensure continued safe operations of the International Space Station and the safety of its crew. Integrated crews have been the norm throughout the International Space Station Program, as five space agencies (the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, NASA, and Roscosmos) operate the station, with each space agency responsible for managing and controlling the hardware it provides. The station was designed to be interdependent and relies on contributions from each space agency to function. No one agency has the capability to function independent of the others. For continued safe operations of the space station, the integrated crew agreement helps ensure that each crewed spacecraft docked to the station includes an integrated crew with trained crew members in both the Russian and U.S. Operating Segment systems.

Commanding role for Andreas in space

03/07/2023
ESA / Science & Exploration / Human and Robotic Exploration

ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen will be commander of the International Space Station (ISS) during his Huginn mission, becoming the sixth European astronaut to fulfil this role.

ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen will fly to the Space Station as part of Crew-7, piloting of SpaceX’s Crew Dragon and will become the International Space Station crew commander during Expedition 70.

Andreas would become the longest serving European ISS commander after arriving in August. He will be commander of Earth’s orbiting outpost for five months, until he returns home in early 2024. Andreas will take over from Roscosmos astronaut Sergey Prokopyev, who has been in command since 12 October 2022 who took over the commanding role from ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.

“It is a big honour for me to be the next commander of the International Space Station. I look forward to taking on the responsibilities and ensure a great stay for all crew members during expedition 70.” says Andreas.

Besides Andreas’s crew members from Crew-7, Expedition 70 is set to have NASA astronaut Loral O’Hara, Roscosmos astronauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub onboard, with more arriving later.

Handing over the key

The change in command of the Space Station happens a few days before the commander leaves for Earth and is marked by a traditional ceremony. All crew members gather as the departing commander gives a speech about their commandership and hands over the symbolic key of the Space Station to the next commander, who says a few words about their new responsibilities.

As the commander of the Space Station, Andreas will have to ensure the safety, good health and well-being of the Space Station’s crew while directing the crew as one team. He will also work with the flight director on ground, on the activities and operations on the Space Station.

“It is great to see that Andreas will be the next commander on the International Space Station. It is a testament to Andreas’s hard work and together with being a pilot on Crew Dragon, I look forward to seeing Andreas go to new heights on his Huginn mission.” says Josef Aschbacher, ESA Director General.

The ones who came before

The International Space Station has had a commander since the first expedition in October 2000.  NASA astronaut William Shephard was the first commander. Since then, there have been 73 commanders of the Space Station, with some astronauts taking the commander role multiple times. Andreas will follow in the footsteps of former European commanders Samantha Cristoforetti, Thomas Pesquet, Luca Parmitano, Alexander Gerst and Frank De Winne.

Follow Andreas’s Huginn mission on the Huginn page and his social media.

Presenting our Expedition 70 mission patch!

The patch is designed around the central yin-yang symbol representing balance; first and foremost, the balance of our beautiful planet Earth that is encircled by the yin-yang symbol and which forms part of the Expedition number.
1/3
In our exploration of space, we are reminded of the uniqueness of Earth; the further we push the boundaries of human existence, the stronger our longing for our home planet grows.
2/3
As our understanding of the cosmos expands, so does our understanding of Earth, and although, we live in an ever-changing world, we recognize the need for a planet in balance to ensure our future.

Very well-deserved, @Astro_Andreas
!

After training closely with Andy for the past year and a half, I’m very happy to know I will be serving under his leadership on-board the @Space_Station
. Andy will be the first Danish astronaut to serve as Commander of the ISS. He will also be the first non-US astronaut to serve as Pilot on Crew Dragon. #Expedition70
