NASA TV -"4 spacecraft orbiting"
« on: 09/19/2006 02:20 AM »
How can you interpret NASA TV's repeated statement today that Atlantis (for example) is "one of four spacecraft orbiting the Earth", by which they presumably mean ISS, Soyuz, the progress dumpship and the penguin herself. I sincerely hope they know that there are plenty more spacecraft up there than that.

Atlantis is not a penguin!  The penguin reference was only vaild as long as Atlantis was on the ground as mainly refers to the penguin's inability to fly.

Just answered on NASAtv saying that Progress was the fourth. My guess is they are referencing the craft involved in the ISS program

Too late. Atlantis will now forever be affectionately known as the Penguin, regardless of flights, by me at least. Pet names need no justification, even if she is black and white with stubby little wings, roaming far through hostile environments. :)

"Involved in the ISS program..." hmm, I guess that works. Hang on! should we also count the miscellaneous nuts and bolts lost overboard during the assembly mission?

Craft, not objects :) lol
If you wanted to go that route there would be a hundred or more in orbit.

Don't use it then if you are the only one.  OV-102 is the hangar queen to me but that isn't universal plus it was from 20 years ago

Yeah, I thought they meant manned spacecraft only, so the fourth one would be mysterious Blackstar spaceplane somewhere in polar orbit ;)

Progress is a maned craft, it is rated to have people on board while in orbit, same as the ATV is a manned craft. The four spacecraft thing must mean four man capable craft.

If it means capable of manned spaceflight it should be Atlantis, Soyus-TMA-8, Soyus-TMA-9 and the ISS.
