The Space Launch System will undoubtedly be the most powerful American space rocket since the Saturn V. However, I wanted to ask what you think the official name for the SLS should be, I'm sure several names for the SLS are in consideration, including Antaeus, Aphrodite, Hera, Zeus, Mars, Colossus, Homeric, Gaia, and Zephyr.

Atë , ( or Aite) would be good.  Since this greek goddess is the eldest daughter of Zeus, & SLS is to carry the first woman & next man to the moon, we should name the whole SLS program for her.  She is also the goddess of folly & delusion.

I also would like "Loki" as he is the norse god of trickery & deceit, as with the SLS, the joke is on the taxpayer.

Sorry Zed, I hit the wrong button! Wasn't there an older thread where we were tossing out names for SLS?
I proposed "Moose". Kids would love it, big and strong and probably endangered! :D

It was the old "Name Suggestions For New SD HLV" thread (circa 2011)

"Typhon" is fine, too. I would say that, in general, the space program is using up too many good names for stuff that doesn't make it to the launch pad...remember "Nova"?

"Undoubtedly," we have a poll on that:

Poll says that your statement is very much in doubt. As for names, I see no reason to change it. Maybe Albatross, or perhaps make the Space -> Senate replacement official.

"Boaty McBoatface" is probably available.

For those who missed the story (non Brits maybe): https://www.nytimes.com/2016/03/22/world/europe/boaty-mcboatface-what-you-get-when-you-let-the-internet-decide.html

and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boaty_McBoatface .... though the name was eventually given to an autonomous submarine. I suppose Rockety McRocketface is still available.

It will never get a name. It will be SLS just the way the space station will always be ISS.

Too much inertia at this point.

Well, we had the Jupiter rocket, then the Saturn rocket, I hate to say this, but the next in line is the dreaded Uranus.

I kinda like Excalibur myself.

Neptune, Nova, Zeus, Nimrod, Rigel, Taurus.

"Artemis, the goddess of hunting, fell in love with Orion, the hunter and, to stop her from giving up her vows of chastity; her brother Apollo dared her to hit a small target in the distance with her bow and arrow. Not knowing that the target was Orion, who was enjoying a swim, she hit it in a single shot, killing her would-be lover. Devastated by his death, she placed Orion among the stars."

Poseidon is the father of Orion. So, it is pretty clear that Neptune is the proper name. It is also powered by hydrolox, giving the water connection as well.

The same naming scheme would allow Neptune. You know, for hopefully the last SHLV that ends up in the ocean.
Which booster has the most soot? SpaceX booster launch history! (discussion)
