How was Columbia able to launch Chandra?
« on: 07/26/2006 12:03 am »
I've heard Chandra was the heaviest payload ever carried by a Space Shuttle, and I thought Columbia, the heaviest shuttle, couldn't carry certain payloads, especially to the ISS. How was NASA able to pull this off?

Hmmm...maybe this thread is more of a historical thread than a video thread, too:

Edit -- also, don't forget that the ISS orbit (51.6-degree inclination) imposes a performance penalty, whereas Chandra was launched more or less due east (~28.5-degrees inclination).

Yeah, I've seen that, but the problem is that the video won't load on my computer. I can see the launch, but not the press briefing, so that's why I made the thread.

I have Window's media player, but I can watch some Quicktime movies, but not this one for some reason. I want to see it badly

You need a DivX codec (the free bundle is fine); any version from the past three years will work, but the latest is at DivX.com.

The SLWET and 28.5 degree inclination allowed it.  Also OV-102 still had the internal airlock.  Chandra was the heaviest "NASA" payload.

So is it safe to say that if another orbiter had its internal airlock at that time, they would've carried it instead?

psloss, How do I get this DivX code? And can anyone give me a summary of what they say in that video?

OK, I would suggest installing the K-Lite Codec Basic Pack.

You can download it from BetaNews here:
http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/KLite_Codec_Pack_Full/1094057842/1/

Scan the download with your antivirus and then install.  Then try the video clip again.

(As an aside, it's a compressor/decompressor, a codec.)

DOD? What was the heaviest, or is it still classified info?

Look at some of Ben E's articles on the feature section of the news site.
