I sure hope all of these lists are finding their way into an Excel spreadsheet.

I should ask why this is in the Russian rocket forum, since its a Ukrainian product.

Sea Launch also under Commercial Space Flight General section… Almost posted in Other Launchers (Indian etc.) but all the Baikonur Zenit are covered under this section?

Interesting...wonder if they have anything on the RD-120, few versions of this engine out there.

Call me suspicious if you like, but I have always wondered about the veracity of the RD-8 designator for the Zenit second stage verniers.

Originally no designator was applied to this propulsion system but I was aware that the engines designed by the Yuzhnoye bureau had been given RD-800 designators.   Therefore, in an article that the British Interplanetary Society published on Spaceflight around 1989 or so I showed the designator as "RD-8??" meaning that there were two unknown digits.   Soon afterwards I saw the designator appear in other sources as "RD-8?" (without a source being given) and then it became "RD-8".

So, I have always has a suspicion that the RD-8 desgnator has been adopted as some sort of convenience rather than being the originally intended one.
I've always been crazy but it's kept me from going insane - WJ.

Andrey, thank you!

 Why SLB80.3… number 2 for Fobos-Grunt?

And thank you for the pictures too.
http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=15589.msg778423#msg778423

And that last picture does little to clarify what to call the rocket, it is both a 3F and a 3SLBF!

So, how exactly did the Spektr-R get a Zenit when the official story was that the Zenit was to be used for the Intelsat launch? Where did the extra Zenit come from?

Zenit for Spektr-R is Zenit for Spektr-R. Zenit for Intelsat 18 was taken from Intelsat 19. Intelsat 19 launch was delayed till next year.

I've found a very interesting picture of ЭПН-03.0694, the first payload of Zenit !

It is in the video "422zen-low.avi" that was available on Spacevideo.ru.

At the beginning of the project, Zenit was to be fitted with RD-124 and RD-125 engines. Someone know when and why they switched to RD-171 and RD-120 ?

A few other numbers.

A145 - 29.6.2007
A160 - 24.9.2011
8.11.2011 - probably A158 (according to the video)

The 5% increase is merely a reference to the engine being tested successfully at 105% of nominal thrust. The big improvement for the RD-171M is that it has a mass of a few hundred kg less than the standard variant, and also a .5 second enhancement in ISP.

And shares 70% of the RD-180 parts. The RD-170/1 to RD-180 was a lot different. They even used different injectors. So the RD-171M is an implementation of the RD-180 in an RD-171. Originally, it was the RD-173 project, which was supposed to have an extra 5% thrust. Since the only use was the Zenit, they went for the same thrust at less weight, in the RD-171M.

Maybe I am the last on this forum to discover this fact : on july 27th, 1991, there was a launch attempt of a Zenit-2 launch vehicle. This flight would have been the Return To Flight of the Zenit after the october 1990 dramatic failure.

But it was cancelled and the rocket returned to Dnepropetrovsk...

Quote

Does the zenit second stage really have 2 different engines?

Rd-120 and RD-8 ?

If yes, How are they located physically?

RD-120 is about 10 times bigger than RD-8?

Any info on how do they plan to do that? Does that involve the Fregat-SB, for example?

Is there any information available for the payload accommodation on the Zenit-2 upper stage prior to the advent of Sealaunch? I seem to remember seeing a truss structure diagram at one point, but I cannot recall where.

Energia is planning to complete the transition to the "03" variant of the Blok-DM, which includes a less powerful, but more efficient main engine - RD-58MF - larger prop tanks, and possibly a return to use of sintin propellant.

The "03" version was flown once, but the larger prop tanks were overfilled, and the flight ended up in the Pacific, as a result.

use of sintin propellant

Wonder if they would reintroduce Sintin with the Soyuz as well. Should be interesting. I couldn't quite find how large of an improvement it would bring

I've seen that Energomash has been presenting lots of papers on synthetic additives to RG-1. Among other things, it would lower the pressure losses on the cooling side of things. So I wouldn't discard sintin, but may be they are thinking of some new additives. Plus, the RD-171M could be pushed to 105% easily. But the Zenit already has a lot of T/W and is very long for it's width. So I guess we should wait and see.

It completely depends on which stage is going to fly with sintin.

surprised they are even messing with  the Zenit.   It works fine, why mess with a good thing?

Thought the new line was going to be from the Soyuz?

Because the heavy satellites that Sea Launch caters are moving towards 6.5tonnes. And the Proton-M has already been uprated to 6.35tonnes, and moving towards 6.5. So they have to keep competitive or loose prospects.

This new enhanced as well as standardized version, recently identified as Zenit 3SLU, will replace both Zenit 3SL and Zenit 3SLB effective starting 2016.
Zenit 3SLUF will replace Zenit 3SLBF effective starting 2017.
Zenit 3UF (also seen as Zenit 3FU) will replace Zenit 3F effective starting 2017.

Zenit 3SLU will also fly with new upper stage version Block DM-3SLU.

Wow ! I'm just discovering, in the official Energiya history (1996-2001, page 789), that the RD-170 used at the beginning of Sea Launch program were taken from an unflown Energiya launcher !

It means that it s possible to convert a RD-170 into RD-171 !

And it means that Antares and Soyuz-2.1v are not the first launchers to fly with old engines !

Bart's book explained that, too. They had one or two sets of Energyia boosters and converted whatever they could for Zenit. The RD-170/171 difference is just the TVC. It was part of the huge effort to find as much commonality between the Energyia boosters and the Zenit. Please remember that the plan was to replace Soyuz (and some Proton missions) with Zenith. The arguments between Glushko's Energyia (who had sold the HLV on that fact) and Yuzhnoye Design Bureau (who insisted on different platforms) were quite vivid. At last the settled on different tank's wall width, TVC and some fairings.
The RD-171M is a new engine which weights 300kg less than the 171 and shares over 70% of parts with the RD-180. Which had a lot of improvements over the original engines.
In any case, Zenit flew proven engines less than a decade old. Antares launched with a design that had never done a mission and were over 40 years old. And with a very complicated gear reduction system (which the RD-17x family avoids at the cost of extra turbines).

I believe that Elektro-L #3 will fly on Proton-M, for example.

Makes sense since rockets are normally ordered several years in advance of the launch.

Yuzhmash still continues to operate, AFAIK.
I should clarify my question into questions.

(If moderators think it's more suitable for this to start a splinter thread, then please do so.)

Is Yuzhmash one huge factory, or a collection of facilities?

My understanding is that Zenit is one of Yuzhmash's major "product lines."  My understanding is that there are three remaining Zenit flights scheduled.  And, therefore, these last few vehicles have already been manufactured, or are perhaps now being manufactured?

With the end of Zenit, will some facilities within Yuzhmash be closed?  Will there be layoffs?

From what (little) I know of Dnipropetrovsk, it seems to be a Yuzhmash company town, although perhaps not as much as it was in the "closed Soviet city" years.  Is that an accurate observation?

Is the end of Zenit a major blow to the city's economy?

I found this link regarding rallying Yuzhmash employees:
http://www.parabolicarc.com/2015/01/21/ukrainian-space-workers-rally-pay/
However, the source for this story was:
http://www.interfax.ru/world/419282
which is a Russian news operation?

Is there any reporting on this issue from within Ukraine?  (Which then could be re-reported in English?)

I hope this bundle of questions is not too confusing, or too off-topic.

Thank you,
Zubenelgenubi

It is more than just three rockets waiting to fly? Two are in Baikonur?

Possibly five more Sea Launch Zenit-2S; and eight more upper stages exist? Zaitcev suggests that the 314ГК DM-SL could fly on Proton instead, but they use TDRS so not sure how that works? One Zenit-2S has already flown from Baikonur.

One more Land Launch upper stage exists; not sure about the rocket.

Not sure how much of the Zenit-2SB rocket ordered for Elektro-L № 3 was manufactured, before it was moved to Proton.

The first stage of the Antares rocket is built by Yuzhmash and is the same diameter as the Zenit tanks. Presumably it uses at least some of the same tooling that is used in the production of the Zenit tanks. Do we know how much? It woulds seems that as long as Orbital doesn't change their suppler Yuzhmash will have a viable Zenit based product through the end of CRS2 at least. I am assuming that Orbital will win that contract but that seems like a pretty good bet.

There may be even less firmed up Zenit launches than you think - Lybid' is as dead as a zombie given the "Black Sea Affairs" and I think Spektr-RG have some chance of switching to Proton because it may be overweight. I would not be surprised if the launch of Elektro-L #2 this summer is the last for Zenit - which would be a big shame for this powerful kerolox rocket.

AFAIK, Yes until 2018 Not sure of its future fate since commercial missions are being forced onto other newer rockets.

EDIT: URSC to Eliminate Sea Launch and Land Launch by end of year unless Ukraine moves production to Russia or returns to the previous status quo with full alliance with Russia.

Now for something else - does anyone have layout plans/illustrations of how the planned Zenit launch pad at Plesetsk (Site 35, eventually built for Angara) would look like had it been completed? What differences would it have with the Baikonur Zenit launch complex?

No mobile tower was to be built and Site 35 was redesigned from lessons learned from building and operating Site 45. Site 35 construction was around 90 percent complete with 95 percent of parts manufacturing completed before a slow work and then stop work orders were issued.

Site 45/1 and 45/2:

History of the facility

The construction of the Zenit launch complex started at the end of the 1970s on the right flank of Baikonur, where many previous rockets developed by Yuzhnoe Design Bureau were tested in the past. The complex included existing infrastructure, which was refurbished for the new task, as well as newly built facilities.

On June 14, 1978, two and a half years after Zenit development officially started, the original team assigned to test Zenit was formed within the 2nd Directorate of NIIP-5 test range. (The 2nd Directorate traditionally tested Yuzhnoe-produced rockets.) On September 7, 1979, a separate department dedicated to work with Zenit was formed within the 2nd Directorate. (67)

In 1982, the 5th Scientific and Testing Directorate was created in Baikonur specifically for the operations with the Zenit boosters.

Origin of the facility

In 1976, Soviet government officially approved the deployment of the next-generation Zenit rocket at the country's northern launch site in Plesetsk. The main contractor for the project, a Moscow-based KBTM design bureau, actively lobbied an immediate start of the construction in Plesetsk, even though its leaders could not anticipate the collapse of the USSR 15 years later. In any case, the Kremlin gave priority to Zenit's pad in Baikonur. Only in 1982, after a series of surveys at the northern site, KBTM developed specifications for adapting Zenit's launch infrastructure for the requirements of the Defense Ministry in Plesetsk.

The Plesetsk-based complex was designed to accommodate a two-stage Zenit-2 and its three-stage version -- Zenit-3, which required five new facilities, comparing to the original launch complex in Baikonur. From Plesetsk, Zenit could send newest Soviet military satellites into high-inclination orbits, possibly including heavy reconnaissance spacecraft planned at the time carrying from 16 to 24 reentry capsules with film. The rocket probably could also launch manned Soyuz spacecraft and its successors toward the future space station deployed in the near-polar orbit!

The Zenit's launch pad in Plesetsk under designation 11P877 was to be located at Site 35 (also previously known as 41st kilometer) and its processing complex -- 11P577 -- would be built three kilometers away at Site 142 using some refurbished and some new buildings. The construction was scheduled to take place from 1986 to 1992. By the time the Soviet economy began crumbling at the end of the 1980s, up to 95 percent of the equipment for Zenit's launch complex had already been manufactured and delivered to Plesetsk. The collapse of the USSR pushed the completion date for the facility to 1996, however after spending 70 percent of funds originally allocated for the task, the Ministry of Defense froze the construction in 1992 and then gave up on the whole idea of bringing Zenit to Plesetsk. (114)

The launch platform for the Zenit rocket was eventually shipped from Plesetsk to Baikonur for a planned restoration of the PU-2 launch pad at the Zenit launch facility, which had been destroyed in a failed launch in 1990. However this effort was also abandoned and the platform made another trip across the country to the port of Vyborg near St. Petersburg, where it was refurbished for the installation on the Sea Launch platform.

The formal government decision to discontinue the effort to bring Zenit to Plesetsk was not taken until Feb. 1, 2000. (728)

YUZHMASH also informs the public that the production of the Zenit LV family continues. Right now two products are in active production. Another, under the national telecommunications satellite "Lybid", is waiting for financing.

Unbooked flights

The Sea Launch flight manifest was posted without much fanfare on the Russian-language version of the corporate web site for the Sea Launch venture, apparently, shortly after the successful campaign to launch the Zenit rocket with the Angosat-1 satellite on Dec. 26, 2017.

Although the schedule detailed all the launch dates with accuracy to a month, it listed no customers or their payloads to be carried during any of these missions. It was unclear, whether Sea Launch was in negotiations with any potential riders at the time.

The description accompanying the schedule also said that the permanent office of the S7 company had been established at the home port of the Sea Launch vessels in Long Beach, California, to handle the tasks of re-activating the facility and resuming launch operations. Based on estimates from a monitoring group, the complex would be ready for operations in 2018, the S7 Group said.

The company also announced that the Russian firms RKK Energia, Roskosmos State Corporation and the Ukraine-based Zenit manufacturer Yuzhmash would be partners in Sea Launch, which would be managed from Moscow by the S7 KTS company, also known as S7 Space.

Sea Launch flight manifest as of December 2017:

Any news from our NSF Sea Launch vets that live in the area and/or are still "connected" to the remaining assets?

At the existing Sea-Launch complex in Long Beach, California where Boeing had its office there for the project. If you want the address search in Yellow Book or something for S7 Sea Launch Limited as that is the name of S7 Space's US operating segment.

I wonder how many Zenits are actually left?

There are references to one further Sea Launch rocket.
https://www.facebook.com/sealaunch/posts/540367662695511

In 2008 TsENKI ordered twelve RD171M engines. Only six were completed. The fifth was А174 and the sixth А175.

In 2015 a DM-SLB was completed by Energia. So was there an associated rocket waiting for it?

Based on serial numbers possibly three further Zenit-3F were planned. One leftover from Elektro-L №3 and one for Lybid?

Their are few mostly completed first and second stages that are in Ukraine minus their engines installed and several others in various stages of production that have resumed recently after a multiyear halt in production.

It is not marked as a RD-171 or RD-171M which S/N numbers use format AXXX
The model series in the picture is designated 11D520.7000-064. RD-170's have been refurbished, modified to RD-171/171M configuration and flown and kept the old Energia engine designation.

Source: "Sea Launch" plan to relocate from the United States to the Far East

MOSCOW, Apr 16 - RIA News. Launch platform "Sea Launch" can relocate from California to the Far East, a source in the rocket and space industry told RIA Novosti.
"The possibility of relocating the Sea Launch platform to the Far East, specifically to Sovetskaya Gavan, for launching the Soyuz-5 light rocket, is being considered," the agency’s source said.
According to him, if the launch platform remains in the United States, it will be almost impossible to launch a new Russian rocket from it, since the agreement between Moscow and Washington provides for the launch of the Russian-Ukrainian Zenit rocket, which was discontinued in 2014. Even if in the future it is possible to sign a new intergovernmental agreement, the Russian side will have to disclose the technical documentation on the new rocket to the American supervisory authorities in order to obtain a launch license, which Moscow will not do, the source said.
“The only way out is to relocate the Sea Launch to Russian territory,” he stressed.
This is not the first time that the idea of relocating the Sea Launch to the Far East is being considered. The issue of changing the port was discussed in 2013 and 2015. Then, Vladivostok, Sovetskaya Gavan, Crimea and Vietnam were considered as the location of the launch platform and command ship. As a result, the project was sold to the S7 group of companies.
Get a comment in the S7 group and its space division S7 Space and failed. In "Roskosmos" refrained from commenting.

Waiver of "Zenit"

At the end of March, it became known that the contract for the production of 12 Zenit rocket launchers for the launch from the Sea Launch launch site would be terminated on the Ukrainian Yuzhmash. The company S7 Sea Launch Limited (part of the S7 group, which owns the floating launch site "Sea Launch") and "Yuzhmash" signed a contract for 12 "Zenit" in April 2017.
Earlier, the director general of the state corporation Dmitry Rogozin told RIA Novosti that Roskosmos together with the S7 group plans to create a reusable Soyuz-5 Light commercial launch vehicle based on the Soyuz-5 rocket, the first launch of which from the Baikonur cosmodrome is scheduled in 2022 .
Rogozin also said that he had invited co-owner of the S7 group, Vladislav Filev, to participate in late April in negotiations on the prospects for the Baiterek project, which would launch Soyuz-5 (Irtysh) missiles from the Baikonur cosmodrome.

Russia returned the production of the RD-120 rocket engine from Ukraine
May 15, 17:24
40574
MOSCOW, May 15 - RIA News. The Scientific Production Association Energomash (part of the Roscosmos State Corporation) reported on Wednesday that it has resumed production of the RD-120 rocket engine, which has been manufactured in Ukraine for more than 30 years.
The RD-120 engine was developed by NPO Energomash in 1976-1985 for the second stage of the Zenit launch vehicle manufactured in Ukraine. It was serially manufactured at the Ukrainian Southern Machine-Building Plant.
“This engine has not been manufactured (Energomash) for more than 30 years. And now there is a resumption of production, its modernization, improvement of some characteristics for its use as part of new Russian promising missiles,” said Vladomlav Palamarchuk, master of the foundry. in the video posted on the website of the enterprise.
NPO Energomash also says that the RD-120K (RD-120U) engine, a modification of the RD-120 with a short nozzle for advanced missiles, is being developed. At the moment, 2 fire tests of one engine have been carried out. It is reported that its development began in 1986.

Parts of the RD-120 were always made in Russia, so that a production in Ukraine is probably not possible for now.

"... use as part of new Russian promising missiles." Not for Zenit.

Well, it's a fine terminological stuff   ;)
However, whatever words they use to call something - the thing itself does not change.

To the subject:
What they call "new" and "promising" launcher is in fact Zenit - but "made in Russia".
Of course, it will be a modification - or adoption - for currently available techniques, but nothing more.
They just do not have money for any substantial modification.

They will call it "Soyuz-5", and it will be very close replica of Zenit.
As such, this article on restart of RD-120 production belongs mostly to the general thread about Soyuz-5.
It is also (somewhat) relevant to this thread because it implies the end of Ukrainian Zenit.

They will call it "Soyuz-5", and it will be very close replica of Zenit.
As such, this article on restart of RD-120 production belongs mostly to the general thread about Soyuz-5.
It is also (somewhat) relevant to this thread because it implies the end of Ukrainian Zenit.
RD-0124MS is being flown in place of RD-120 and RD-8 on "Soyuz-5". RD-120 and RD-8 would need slight enlargement and thrust uprating to fly the longer and wider "Proton sized" second stage with various modern Proton-M/Angara-A3/A5 class fairings depending on the version flown.

Excluding previously designed and parts tested RD-120K proposed Russian Versions as RD-120M (similar to RD-120F) and RD-120MV and RD-8 would be replaced potentially by a high altitude version of RD-0110R or a similar like steering vernier engine.

It is rocket for Lybid launch.
And when is this start planned?

I think that there won't be any start at all. This satellite is currently stored in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, at the satellite manufacturer's premises. Storage time of the same has already expired 3 years ago. So if Ukraine now wants to launch it into space, it will have to pay for extra storage time, life extension activities and so on but the odds are that ukraine will not be able to do this not only because of money issues but also due to mutual multiple sanctions between Ukraine and Russia. The other issue is Zenit rocket. Roskosmos imposed embargo on supply of any piece of rocket technology to Ukraine. It means that they will not be able to build this rocket. Moreover, this year Russia has returned Zenit launch pad back to Kazakhstan. Now the countries are negotiating on rebuilding this launchpad for Soyuz-5 rocket which will make it impossible to launch Zenit from Baikonur anymore. I think that Zenit is 99 % dead project.

There was an update in the Sea Launch thread showing they were destroying what appears to be a previously stored fairing at the port with a wrecking machine. Considering the value of fairings, that doesn't bode well for Zenit activities.

I would say if Lybid is ever launched, it would not be on a Zenit.

I would guess the new launch vehicle would be the Proton-M Blok DM-03.

It would still not be in the current interests to do that and same for Angara-A5.

Proton costs about 65 mln US dollars per launch at least and the last year Roscosmos had stopped production of its motors in favour of Angara motors. This rocket will be decomissioned during next 4-5 years. And i think most (if not all) of the Proton rockets already have their customers. Anyway, previously ukrainians wanted to launch the satellite using their "national" rocket, that would be much cheaper. Now it seems impossible and i doubt that their authorities are going to pay such sum of money to russians in current political situation (they were not able to do that previously because that project was using credit money and ukrainian government is still paying for that credit). The satellite was ready for launch by the end of 2013. If they are going wait for some more time, this one will turn in 250 mln dollars piece of metal junk.

That's a huge mess around the project Lybid.
Main contractor MDA (now MAXAR) has the chunks a long time ago thrown.
The Zenit launch is just one of the problems.
Theoretically, Lybid would be a payload for a testlaunch on Angara. For little money.
But that's probably politically impossible.

Cross-posts regarding Zenit; same source:
Now, with the ratification of the Russia/Kazakhstan agreement for the Baïterek project, there is no place for the Zenit launcher.

The agreement between Russia and Kazakhstan for transformation of the Zenit launch pad in a Soyuz-5 pad in Baïkonur was ratified.

At 05:50 in the video you see 70100301.
2TRS2S1.14
This is for Antares.

In the photo you can see the inscription SL S7.1 70109401.
I understand it like this: Sea Launch (?) S7 first rocket, serial number 70109401.

Two thoughts, how many more Antares there will be? What's next?
Second, many white-haired heads at Yuzhmash. The youth is missing.

NGIS should get some more Cygnus missions but less per year. Dream chaser will be flying next year which means cargo missions will be shared between three vehicles.  On plus side commercial crew missions to station start next year so will be more cargo required.

What is the status of Zenit given the breakdown in Ukraine-Russian relations? Is it officially retired or stuck in limbo?

Is the Lybid payload similarly unlaunchable?

Rockets exist minus Russian provided hardware in both Baikonur (now service and lifetime expired hardware) and in the Yuzmash factory production halls. They kept building them at a slow rate to retain worker knowledge.
The Lybid payload was formally moved out of its assigned cleanroom placed in a storage container long since mothballed in another facility.
The site 45 where it is launched was long since mothballed and "undergoing" a slow conversion to Soyuz-5 family. The Zenit TEL system railcars and powercar has reportedly been removed from its complex to Baikonurs launcher graveyard and equipment abandonment areas. Zenit fairings and some other hardware have already been scrapped for launchers operating under the Sea-Launch project.
