Space Systems Command declares final GPS III satellite
“Available for Launch”

SUMMARY: Global Positioning System III Space Vehicle 10 is declared available for launch,
marking Space Systems Command’s completion of constellation modernization efforts and
production for the GPS III program. GPS is the USSF’s most utilized capability, delivering the
gold standard in positioning, navigation, and timing services for U.S. and allied operations
worldwide.
EL SEGUNDO, CA – Space Systems Command officials have declared the tenth Global Positioning
System (GPS) III Space Vehicle (SV) as being available for launch on Dec. 8, 2022– marking the
completion of GPS III satellite series production. GPS III SV07, SV08, SV09, and SV10 are currently at
Lockheed Martin’s GPS III Processing Facility in Waterton, Colorado awaiting launch.
“The completion of the tenth, and final, GPS III space vehicle is a significant milestone for GPS
modernization. This would not have been possible without the collaboration, communication, and
accountability of our industry and government partners,” said Scott Thomas, GPS III program manager
for the GPS Space Vehicles Acquisition Delta within SSC’s Military Communications & Positioning,
Navigation, and Timing directorate. “The GPS III program contributions underpin U.S. national security
needs for our warfighters and for more than four billion GPS users worldwide.”
GPS III satellites deliver enhanced performance and accuracy through a variety of
improvements, including increased signal protection with improved accuracy. GPS III also delivers a
new L1C signal designed for interoperability with similar Global Navigation Satellite Systems and
expands the not yet operational civilian L5 signal, dubbed the “Safety-of-Life” signal. As a crucial
technological foundation for internet, financial, transportation, and agricultural operations, GPS
delivers the gold standard in positioning, navigation, and timing services supporting U.S. and allied
operations worldwide.
Military Communications & Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) is the program executive
office within Space Systems Command that is responsible for delivering next generation technologies
that bolster the resilience of our nation’s military satellite communications and space based PNT
capabilities. Innovation focus areas include strategic, protected tactical, wideband and narrowband
satellite communications, global positioning system user equipment and command and control, and
PNT services.
Space Systems Command is the U.S. Space Force Field Command responsible for acquiring and
delivering resilient war fighting capabilities to protect our nation’s strategic advantage in and from
space. The Command manages an $11 billion space acquisition budget for the Department of Defense

The Group 5-4 mission carried 55 Starlink satellites. These satellites are believed to be version 1.5 of the spacecraft, improved from the original Starlink satellites but not yet the version intended to leverage Starship’s launch capabilities. Group 5 missions deploy satellites into orbits reserved for the second generation Starlink constellation, but so far have been limited to this “F9-1” satellite configuration.

Future launches to the Starlink Gen2 constellation may use the F9-2 configuration, which are larger satellites modified to be launched on Falcon 9. Once Starship is ready to carry and deploy payloads, the full-size Starlink Gen2 satellites can be launched.
