WASHINGTON — The United States and Israel are finalizing an agreement that would see NASA contribute to an upcoming Israeli astrophysics mission. The focus of the agreement, which could be signed as soon as later this month, involves a mission called Ultrasat under development by Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science with support from the Israel Space Agency and German research center DESY.As part of the agreement, NASA would provide the launch of Ultrasat, which will operate in geostationary orbit. NASA will likely arrange to fly Ultrasat as a secondary payload on a commercial GEO launch, said James Rhoads, NASA project scientist for Ultrasat, during a session of the 241st Meeting of the American Astronomical Society Jan. 11. ...Ultrasat has a three-year prime mission, but Waxman said it will carry enough propellant to operate for six. He said development of the spacecraft is on schedule for a launch in the first quarter of 2026.
GeoXO Program Received Formal Program ApprovalNOAA’s future Geostationary Extended Observations (GeoXO) mission, NOAA’s next generation of geostationary satellites after the GOES-R Series that will continue and expand Earth observations from geostationary orbit, received formal program approval from the Department of Commerce deputy secretary following the Milestone 2 Review Board on Dec. 12. The GeoXO program is now approved to proceed to the development phase of the mission. GeoXO’s advanced capabilities will help address our changing planet and the evolving needs of NOAA’s data users through improved observations for weather forecasting and new ocean and atmospheric measurements. The first GeoXO satellite is scheduled to launch in 2032.

Europe also continues to deal with the loss of the Soyuz rocket. It led ESA in October to announce it would launch its Euclid astrophysics mission, originally intended to launch on Soyuz, on a SpaceX Falcon 9 instead. That launch is scheduled for the third quarter of this year, Aschbacher said, likely in July.

NASA and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced Tuesday a collaboration to demonstrate a nuclear thermal rocket engine in space, an enabling capability for NASA crewed missions to Mars.NASA and DARPA will partner on the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations, or DRACO, program. The non-reimbursable agreement designed to benefit both agencies, outlines roles, responsibilities, and processes aimed at speeding up development efforts. “NASA will work with our long-term partner, DARPA, to develop and demonstrate advanced nuclear thermal propulsion technology as soon as 2027. With the help of this new technology, astronauts could journey to and from deep space faster than ever – a major capability to prepare for crewed missions to Mars,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “Congratulations to both NASA and DARPA on this exciting investment, as we ignite the future, together.”

SpaceX is targeting Thursday, January 26 at 4:22 a.m. ET (9:22 UTC) for a Falcon 9 launch of 56 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. If needed, there is an additional launch opportunity the same day at 6:03 a.m. ET (11:03 UTC) with backup opportunities also available on Friday, January 27 at 3:57 a.m. ET (8:57 UTC) and 5:38 a.m. ET (10:38 UTC).The first stage booster supporting this mission previously launched CRS-22, Crew-3, Turksat 5B, Crew-4, CRS-25, Eutelsat HOTBIRD 13G, mPOWER-a and one Starlink mission. Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the Just Read the Instructions droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
The word from a colleague with direct knowledge is that Intelsat 40e will not launch on March 7.Current target date is March 23 but a slip “into April would not be surprising”.
NASA's Joel Montalbano says they're targeting mid-April for the Boeing CST-100 Starliner crewed test flight, with Ax-2 later in the second quarter.Still in talks with Roscosmos for integrated crews (seat barters between Soyuz and Crew Dragon) for fall missions. [Jan 25]
