High resolution satellite imagery shows that there was an explosion at a launch pad south of the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in October 2021.

The location of this pad is 40°50'13.3"N, 100°10'31.8"E (goo.gl/maps/3qm44WQw3…).

Using Sentinel-2 imagery combined with the high resolution images above, we can see that the explosion happened between October 10 and October 17.

The images appear to show a damaged mobile shelter moved toward the northwest, which might suggest that the rocket was out in the open  when the explosion happened.  Perhaps it was during a ground test.  I wonder if the rocket was being erected from horizontal to vertical when it happened.  There are other possibilities of course.

From current info, it seems that this is a test site for SRBs. So most likely a test that went wrong. We're still digging to try find more info on it

There’s a team always standing by at the launch pad until the last 30 minutes before a launch. They are the special repair team responsible for solving the emergencies.

I interviewed this emergency mentainance team at #JiuquanSatelliteLaunchCenter.

I took some time to make an updated map of Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center :)

I'll expand the map over time to cover a much larger area, but I'm happy to share the first version!

There's also an interactive copy available here: https://api.soar.earth/short/sro21ao9o4

Any corrections welcome! Some info was hard to find, so always happy to fix things :)

Now that Tianlong-2 has launched and we have a 'new' launch pad, I've updated my map above.
I still plan to expand this map to the north when I have time. As always, any corrections are welcome :)

I just watched the Shenzhou 16 | Long March 2F launch.

Questions:  Where would the boosters and 1st stage land?
They seem to separate simultaneously so should drop close to each other.

I ask because Beijing is due east 860 miles from the launch site.
.....source GreatCircleMapper, http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=GC0004-Pek&DU=mi)
I assume to get to a 41 degree orbit from a 40-41 degree launch site, that one would launch due east.

I found an interesting article about Chinese launch pad numbers.
According to this article, the numbers for each launch are as follows:

https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/617774688

CZ-2F Pad : LC-90 (Site 921)
CZ-2C Pad : LC-94 (Site 603)
Flat Pad : LC-95A and LC-95B
Landspace Pad : LC-96
Space Pioneer Pad : LC-120
CAS Space Pad : LC-130

This article also refers to the Space Pioneer launch site as LC-120.

Using the content of this thread, the article I mentioned earlier, and Google Maps, I organized the JSLC launch pad.
It's interesting to see new looking facilities at the allegedly abandoned JSLC North Complex.
This area has a double barricade, a shelter that can cover the entire train, a structure like an ammunition storage, etc., so there is a possibility that it is a missile-related facility...

There appears to have been another explosion on the CASIC test stand.

It seems that since about October 2024 the various launch pads of the commercial companies are summarized under the new designation "Dongfeng Commercial Aerospace Innovation Experimental Zone" ("东风商业航天创新试验区"). I found this name for the first time here and it was also used in official statements for the recent LJ-1 and ZQ-2E launches.

http://www.xinhuanet.com/tech/20241128/81f7751c264c4353800ad984debe361c/c.html
This recent official communique also names the individual launch areas:

-The Landspace Liquid Oxygen and Methane Launch Site (蓝箭航天液氧甲烷发射场), which is made of LC-96A (ZQ-2, ZQ-3 VTVL) and upcoming LC-96B (ZQ-3)

-The CAS Space  Solid Rocket Launch Site (中科宇航固体火箭发射工位), this is LC-130 for Lijian/Kinetica-1, with a neighbouring launch infrastructure for Lijian-2 in construction

-Reusable rocket testing site (可重复使用火箭试验阵地), I believe that this is LC-120, used for the CASC-SAST VTVL, Space Pioneer's Tianlong 2 and I-Space's Hyperbola 2 VTVL. This also includes a new landing pad that is being used for the SAST-VTVL high altitude tests.

I don't know if LC-95A/B are considered as part of Dongfeng Commercial...; these two pads have dual commercial and governmental use.

Finally it says "a series of commercial dedicated launch test facilities are planned to be newly built to meet the future high-density test launch needs of new commercial rockets such as Tianlong-3, Zhuque-3, Pallas-1, and Lijian-2."

All four rockets' launch pad are visibly under construction as of October imagery on google earth.

Zhuque-3 is at LC-96B, next to LC-96A, coordinates 40.9149°N 100.2454°E
Lijian-2 is likely next to LC-130,  40°49'2.93"N 100°13'10.81"E
It is speculated that Tianlong-3 pad is located at  40°48'26.81"N 100° 8'9.26"E
It is speculated that Pallas-1 pad is located at  40°46'33.45"N 100° 6'26.51"E

Noteworthy that Deep Blue Aerospace's Nebula rocket test site is not included in Jiuquan, and is much further away.
