BREAKING: @NASA and @SpaceX are targeting Pensacola as the primary return location for Crew Dragon w/ @Astro_Doug and @AstroBehnken from the @Space_Station. We are targeting undocking at 7:34 p.m. EDT today. Read more:

NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2: Teams Targeting Gulf of Mexico for Splashdown

Following a scheduled assessment of weather conditions for splashdown, teams from NASA and SpaceX are proceeding with preparations to bring NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley home to Earth aboard the SpaceX Crew Dragon “Endeavour” spacecraft.

Conditions are “Go” at the primary targeted site, off the coast Pensacola, and alternate site off the coast of Panama City in the Gulf of Mexico for splashdown and recovery on Sunday, Aug. 2. Teams will continue to closely monitor Hurricane Isaias and evaluate impacts to the potential splashdown sites.

SpaceX will monitor changes to conditions until 2.5 hours prior to the scheduled undocking, when a determination to proceed with departure will be made. If conditions are marginal and exceed the accepted criteria, a joint recommendation by SpaceX and NASA will be made whether to proceed with undocking at 7:34 p.m. EDT. NASA and SpaceX will make the final decision to proceed after the astronauts are ready inside Crew Dragon just before undocking.

Live coverage of NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 return will begin at 5:15 p.m. and continue through the targeted splashdown at 2:41 p.m. on Sunday, the first return of a commercially built and operated American spacecraft carrying astronauts from the space station. It will wrap up NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 test flight after more than two months at the International Space Station.

Hurley and Behnken arrived at the orbiting laboratory in the Crew Dragon May 31 following a launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on May 30. This is SpaceX’s final test flight and is providing data on the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking, splashdown, and recovery operations.

More details about the return can be found in the Top 10 Things to Know for NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 Return.

More details about the mission and NASA’s commercial crew program can be found in the press kit online and by following the commercial crew blog, @commercial_crew and commercial crew on Facebook.

Learn more about station activities by following @space_station and @ISS_Research  on Twitter as well as the ISS Facebook and ISS Instagram accounts.

Docking their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule to the International Space Station in May completed the first part of the mission for NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley on the first crewed test flight for the Commercial Crew Program (CCP). But their task was far from over. The following months contained another important piece of their journey: living and working aboard the orbiting laboratory. Together, they spent more than 100 hours assisting or conducting science and technology demonstrations on station. Learn more about their work here: https://go.nasa.gov/312ES1y

A relatable exchange that I thought I'd enter into the record:

Quote
Bob Behnken: The timeline application on my tablet gives me an error message that says "Safari cannot open the page...", and then it's got an html address, "...because your ipad is not connected to the internet."

SpaceX CORE: And can you confirm that wifi is off and airplane mode is on?

Bob Behnken: Yes, wifi is off and airplane mode is on.

He then held the ipad up to an internal camera to help SpaceX see the error on the screen.

There was a "Mission Highlights" video played on stream that has some cool inside-ISS views filmed by the crew of arrival and EVA prep, some very cool footage of what looks like every experiment they touched while onboard, and some very, very cool high quality EVA GoPro views, including footage of re-pressurization, which has sound, and of doffing, which also has sound.

Now that that part of the stream has archived, I can link to it via timestamp:

https://youtube.com/watch?v=sl2jo1bSxl8&t=350m25s

Was going to do a few images to capture it if the link took too long to show up, but as I can now do the above, I'll just add one image in particular.

https://blogs.nasa.gov/spacestation/2020/08/02/astronauts-wake-up-preps-crew-dragon-for-splashdown-today/

Mark Garcia Posted on August 2, 2020

NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley are beginning their final day in orbit inside the Crew Dragon “Endeavour” spacecraft ahead of splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico at 2:48 p.m. EDT this afternoon.

NASA’s live coverage of the return continues.

To wake them, Mission Control Hawthorne played the dads an audio message from  their sons.

Conditions remain “Go” at the primary targeted site, off the coast of Pensacola, and alternate site off the coast of Panama City in the Gulf of Mexico for splashdown and recovery.

Here’s the timeline for return activities (all times Eastern):

1:51 p.m. – Crew Dragon performs claw separation. The claw is located on Crew Dragon’s trunk, connecting thermal control, power, and avionics system components located on the trunk to the capsule.

    1:51 p.m. – Trunk separation
    1:56 p.m. – Deorbit burn begins
    2:08 p.m. – Deorbit burn complete
    2:11 p.m. – Nosecone deploys
2:32 p.m. – Crew Dragon maneuvers to attitude for re-entry

2:44 p.m. – Drogue parachutes deploy at about 18,000 feet in altitude while Crew Dragon is moving approximately 350 miles per hour.
2:45 p.m. – Main parachutes deploy at about 6,000 feet in altitude while Crew Dragon is moving approximately 119 miles per hour.
    2:48 p.m. – Splashdown

Crew Dragon autonomously undocked from the International Space Station’s Harmony module at 7:35 p.m. Saturday, two very small engine burns separating Crew Dragon from the station, and the spacecraft slowly maneuvered away from the orbital laboratory. Once flying free, Dragon Endeavour autonomously executed four departure burns that moved the spaceship away from the space station and the crew began the flight home. A phasing burn overnight put it on its path toward Pensacola.

The duo arrived at the orbiting laboratory on May 31, following a successful launch on May 30 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During their 62 days aboard station, Behnken and Hurley contributed more than 100 hours of time to supporting the orbiting laboratory’s investigations, participated in public engagement events, and supported four spacewalks with Behnken and Cassidy to install new batteries in the station’s power grid and upgrade other station hardware.

NASA took a big step in opening up access to space with the Commercial Crew program. Today’s landing demonstrates that commercial access can be done safely and efficiently. Congratulations to the crew, @NASA, @SpaceX and all involved in this wholly successful mission.

Q from Loren Grush: boats surrounding crew dragon, how it was allowed and what plan is for future
Bridenstine: "not what we were anticipating" CG did a good job ahead of landing. "We need to do better next time."
Stich: we do clear a 10 nm area; 2 CG cutters; was totally clear for splashdown event;

Q from Chris Davenport: updates on Bob and Doug
Stich: they were doing well when he left the control center. Plan for helo transport to Pensecola NAS.

Q: Keith Cowing: followup on Loren's Q adding N2O4 concern. Bridenstine.
Shotwell: Focus was on safety for Bob and Doug. Lesson learned we probably need more CG assets and maybe more SpX and NASA assets as well.

Q from Irene Klotz: <>
Shotwell: very comfortable with moving forward

Q from Joey Roulette: how was reusability decision made?
Shotwell: capsule designed for 5 to 10 missions but have to see how it checks out when capsule is back to the cape. Reusability was a part of original bid for ccp.
Stich: confirms Shotwell's comments. 4 month refurb. lots of margin for crew-2. Area 59 at cape for maintenance.

Q from Marcia Dunn: mood in SpX mission control
Shotwell: relief at success but splashdown just beginning of recovery; not done until Bob and Doug out of capsule. Elon on flight to Houston now to meet with astros.

Q from Eric Berger: 12 years since F1 flight 3 failure. <?> Comment on the changes.
Shotwell: great we've done so much hand in hand with NASA

Q from Stephen Clark: Are you planning on building a fleet of vehicles? for Soichi Q on flying aboard 3 different vehicles.
Soichi: SpX "rookie"
Shotwell: wait and see inspection results before deciding how many we have to build before we say we're done building.

Qs from Jacqui Goddard, et al.

Q from Jeff Foust: details on going over demo 2 spacecraft to prep for certification
Stich: 1: review telemetry from undocking through recovery with all the teams. 2: look at the parachutes, SpX was doing a great job recovering them. 3: SpX will take vehicle apart, will give good opps for inspection.

Q from Michael Sheets: protocol for egress, being helped out vs. stepping out on their own.
Stich: B+D in space at 0g 63 days and pulled 4g today. Expect similar aid for long duration missions

Q from Marcia Smith: will 4 person crews require more supplies, etc?
Montalbano: looking forward to added crew members. Ready to "rock and wall"
Q from Mike Wall: for crew 1, what do you want to talk with Bob and Doug about now?
Crew 1: curious about sensations of re-entry, chute deploy, splash.

Q for Shotwell re: Megan McArthur.
Shotwell: please with assignment of McArthur as Crew 2 pilot.

Q regarding NTO
Stich: maybe some mechanism where getting entrapped, speculation, handle it better on next flight perhaps starting purge as soon as vehicle aboard. SpX team took extra precautions today.
Shotwell: will likely initiate purge sooner. also low winds were a factor. good lesson for us.
Bridenstine: NTO fumes common but passers-by hasn't been common in the past!

Q: Bob and Doug's timeline?
Stich: already left ship headed for Pensacola; will fly from there to JSC. Pandemic precautions.

Q: what foibles?
Shotwell: backup generator on Go Navigator (vehicle flanked by other ships though). Oxidizer on outside of Dragon. Those are the only two (foibles).

Yes, it is. Go Navigator was heading west for a brief period, hence the Stennis or Michoud thinking. It now appears to have turned back toward Pensacola. Or as I said before, perhaps this is all was just anomalies in the tracking.

The SpaceX Demo-2 test flight for NASA's Commercial Crew Program was the first to deliver astronauts to the International Space Station and return them safely to Earth onboard a commercially built and operated spacecraft.

The crew launched on Saturday, May 30 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and arrived at the orbiting laboratory on May 31. The SpaceX Crew Dragon “Endeavour” splashed down off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, Sunday, Aug. 2 at 2:48 pm EDT following their undocking from the International Space Station Saturday, Aug. 1 at 7:35 pm EDT.

These activities are a part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which has been working with the U.S. aerospace industry to launch astronauts on American rockets and spacecraft from American soil the International Space Station for the first time since 2011. This is SpaceX’s final test flight and is providing data about the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking, splashdown and recovery operations.

The test flight also will help NASA certify SpaceX’s crew transportation system for regular flights carrying astronauts to and from the space station. SpaceX is readying the hardware for the first rotational mission that will occur following NASA certification, which is expected to take about six weeks.

The goal of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation to and from the International Space Station. This could allow for additional research time and increase the opportunity for discovery aboard humanity’s testbed for exploration, including helping us prepare for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

Coast guard statement on the boats
Here is the Coast guard statement in plain text, making it more quotable:

Quote
"Regarding the pleasurecraft that were present at the splashdown this afternoon:

The Coast Guard worked closely with NASA and SpaceX to plan the recovery of the Dragon crew in a way that prioritized the safety of the boating public and those involved in the recovery operations.

Mariners were alerted to pending hazardous operations within a specified boundary by a Broadcast Notice to Mariners, issued 29 July.

The establishment of an official safety zone that authorizes the Coast Guard to hold legal authority over boaters in violation of entering an area was not available due to the targeted splashdown location being outside of the navigable waterways of the United States, which in most cases is limited to 12-nautical miles from shore.

A Coast Guard 87-foot patrol boat established a physical presence four hours before the scheduled splashdown to discourage boaters from entering within 10-nautical miles of the NASA-designated splashdown zone, for their safety from potential dangers associated with the operation. A Coast Guard 45-foot response boat was also deployed to the vicinity leading up to the scheduled splashdown.

Additionally, a radio broadcast was issued to mariners two hours before the scheduled splashdown to remind boaters of the operation and to stay clear.

With limited assets available and with no formal authority to establish zones that would stop boaters from entering the area, numerous boaters ignored the Coast Guard crews' requests and decided to encroach the area, putting themselves and those involved in the operation in potential danger.

While the Coast Guard has the legal authority to board vessels and enforce laws past the 12-mile navigable waterways rule, it would have required a massive undertaking of resources to engage each boat that came into the area and suspend their voyage or otherwise escort them out.

The boating public is often a valuable resource to the Coast Guard, and the spirit of cooperation we share is a relationship built upon 230 years of trust and understanding. The actions of those boaters today were not representative of the average boating community, and they put themselves and others at risk through their actions. This lack of regard for safety is something that the Coast Guard takes very seriously.

A comprehensive review of this operation will be conducted between the Coast Guard, NASA, and SpaceX, and the development of lessons learned will be our next priority moving forward."

MEDIA ADVISORY M20-090
NASA Astronauts to Discuss Historic SpaceX Crew Dragon Test Flight

NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley will discuss their recently completed SpaceX Demo-2 test flight mission to the International Space Station during a news conference at 4:30 p.m. EDT Tuesday, Aug. 4.

The news conference from NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston will be broadcast live on NASA Television and on the agency’s website.

This will be a virtual event with no media present, due to the safety restrictions related to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Reporters who wish to participate by telephone must call Johnson's newsroom at 281-483-5111 to RSVP no later than 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Those following the briefing on social media may ask questions using the hashtag #AskNASA.

SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, carrying Behnken and Hurley, splashed down at 2:48 p.m. Sunday under parachutes in the Gulf of Mexico, off the coast of Pensacola, Florida, and was successfully recovered by SpaceX. After returning to shore, the astronauts immediately flew back to Houston, where they were greeted by their families and invited guests – including NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine and SpaceX Chief Engineer Elon Musk – at a welcome home ceremony.

NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 test flight launched May 30 from the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Nearly 19 hours later, Crew Dragon docked to the forward port of the International Space Station’s Harmony module May 31.

Behnken and Hurley contributed more than 100 hours to scientific experiments and participated in numerous public engagement events during their 62 days aboard the station. Behnken conducted four spacewalks with Expedition 63 Commander and NASA colleague Chris Cassidy to upgrade two power channels on the station’s truss with new lithium-ion batteries. Overall, the astronaut duo spent 64 days in orbit, completed 1,024 orbits around Earth and traveled 27,147,284 miles.

This was SpaceX’s final test flight and will provide data about the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking, splashdown, and recovery operations. The data will inform NASA’s certification of the SpaceX crew transportation system for regular flights carrying astronauts to and from the space station. SpaceX is readying the hardware for the first rotational mission, which is scheduled to occur following NASA certification. NASA astronauts Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover, Jr., and Shannon Walker, as well as Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), are assigned to the first operational flight of Crew Dragon and spend six months aboard the station.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program works with the U.S. aerospace industry to develop safe, reliable, and cost-effective crew transportation systems that will carry astronauts on American rockets and spacecraft from American soil to the International Space Station, and back. A successful Commercial Crew Program could allow for additional research time and increase the opportunity for discovery aboard humanity’s testbed for exploration, including helping us prepare for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

Multinational Space Operators Support Successful Return of DM-2

By Maj. Cody Chiles, Combined Force Space Component Command Public Affairs / Published August 03, 2020

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. --

Multinational military space operators from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States provided mission essential human space flight support, and emergency recovery support options, for the safe return of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Commercial Crew Program Demonstration Mission 2 from the International Space Station to the Gulf of Mexico, Aug. 1-2, 2020.

A combined team of U.S. and multinational exchange and liaison space operators stationed at Vandenberg AFB coordinated with a global network of space and military operations centers to support the SpaceX Dragon Endeavour spacecraft with space surveillance sensor coverage, collision avoidance screening and warnings, recovery trajectory tracking, and rapidly deployable global personnel recovery capabilities, in support of DM-2.

“The U.K., Australian, Canadian, German and French space forces worked with our CFSCC and CSpOC team on tracking the Dragon capsule, space debris collision avoidance, and for contingency astronaut recovery plans,” said Maj. Gen. John E. Shaw, Combined Force Space Component Commander, U.S. Space Command. “My congratulations go to NASA and SpaceX for a safe and successful mission. The U.S. Space Force, U.S. Space Command, CFSCC and partner nations were proud to support.”

The return of the DM-2 marks the first launch and recovery of American astronauts from American soil since the final Space Shuttle flight, STS-135, in July 2011; and the first capsule splashdown recovery at sea for NASA since the final Apollo mission in 1975. Additionally, this was the first crewed test flight of SpaceX’s Dragon, and the first time American astronauts were launched to and from the International Space Station aboard a commercial vehicle.

The Department of Defense has provided Human Space Flight Support Operations to NASA since 1958. The DoD continues to provide operational resources requested by NASA to support the Soyuz, Orion and other Commercial Crew Programs.

[Editor’s Note: For additional details about DoD rescue forces postured to support the DM-2 mission, see this Space News Webinar featuring Maj. Gen. John Shaw, Brig. Gen. Doug Schiess, and Lt. Col. Michael Thompson.]

One interesting thing that Doug Hurley mentionned at the end of the press conference is that at the time of the Demo-2 launch, the software for Forward docking port was ready but the one for the Zenith port wasn't yet ready. So it's one thing that will still need to be tested in future missions.

Boater Chris Tipton said he and others on the estimated 30 boats in the vicinity that afternoon were excited to witness history and just wanted to get close enough to capture the moment via video and photo.

Flown Dragon Panel from the First Crew Mission

After 63 days in space, it jettisoned to initiate parachute recovery. It is incredibly special to me, carrying Bob & Doug and the SpaceX logo to the ISS — the rebirth of American spaceflight.

This is from the parachute system cover panel from the recent DM-2 mission that brought Bob & Doug to the ISS and safely back for a splashdown in the Gulf of Mexico.

On the back of the flown Delta Panel (that has the SpaceX logo on it), there are three of these powerful solid titanium spring assemblies that jettisoned the hatch.

From a SpaceX engineer: "One of my favorite things (aesthetically) about the delta panel pushers is how the concentric spring coils are wound in opposite directions of each other - which creates a cool appearance and is done for good reason"

The DM-2 trunk is currently in a 208x235 km orbit, dropping 8km in the past 24 hours.  A few days left sounds right.

The DM-1 trunk is currently in a 354x354 km orbit, dropping 200 meters in the past day.  It will be up there for a bit.

The SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket with the Crew Dragon lifts off at 3:22 p.m. EDT on May 30, 2020, from Launch Complex 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, carrying astronauts Douglas Hurley and Robert Behnken on the Demo-2 mission to the International Space Station. This marks the first launch of astronauts from U.S. soil since the conclusion of the Space Shuttle Program in 2011. Part of the agency’s Commercial Crew Program, this will be SpaceX’s final flight test, paving the way for NASA to certify the crew transportation system for regular, crewed flights to the orbiting laboratory.

Apparently we won another Emmy for DM-2, “Outstanding Daytime Special Event”.

Part of me really wants to win the Emmy for “Outstanding Technical Team” but I don’t think the media team at X will ever actually submit for that 😐 We are doing LIVE WEBCASTS FROM SPACE! Come on now!

Award was back in June and went to Space Launch Live: America Returns to Space (Discovery and Science Channel).

2 years ago today, @Astro_Doug & @AstroBehnken launched in capsule Endeavor on SpaceX's first crewed mission, Demo-2. That launch will always hold a special place in my heart as it sparked my love for spaceflight to an unimaginable amount.
