SpaceX’s Falcon 9 is targeting the launch of 29 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

A live webcast of this mission will begin about five minutes prior to liftoff, which you can watch here and on X @SpaceX. You can also watch the webcast on the X TV app.

This will be the 25th flight for the first stage booster supporting this mission, which previously launched Crew-5, GPS III Space Vehicle 06, Inmarsat I6-52, CRS-28, Intelsat G-37, NG-20, TD7, and 17 Starlink missions. Following stage separation, the first stage will land on the A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship, which will be stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

I reviewed the video several times; indeed, there is evidence of ice shedding in a stream-like pattern. This phenomenon appears immediately following each firing of the attitude control thrusters. I believe it is caused by excess ice accumulating after each firing event. Thank you for your keen observation; I will also seek input from others. Additionally, I will review previous launch data tonight.

I will provide a video clip of the area of interest—please maintain focus on the left screen and the bottom of the booster, where streams of frozen propellant (perhaps liquid nitrogen) are released following thruster firings.

Many recent flights are during the night, making visibility at the bottom of the booster challenging, so I had to go back to a daytime launch. In this clip, the same ice is coming from the bottom of the booster after each reaction firing. I think this is a usual occurrence.

Every rocket with subzero fuel and/or oxidizer has ice on their exterior. It seems to me that some observers haven’t been fully aware of that, and assume the ice falling off in any way (specifically, the example listed above) is like a mechanical piece breaking off or something that’s leaking.

So all in all, it’s normal for ice to fall off these kinds of rockets. I’ve said this numerous times for years.
