Good work with these schedules, GW.
-
Thanks. Quick response in pinning it as well.
I guess I just like schedules...
I was slightly surprised by the lack of 2SLBs.
-
According to the Russian launch scgedule thread, the launch of AMOS-3 will take plave on the first quarter of 2008.

Corrected. I checked that thread as well. Must've missed it.

According to SPACEFLIGHT NOW -
DIRECTV-11 Scheduled for Sea Launch in December, no mention of Echostar 11.

According to SPACEFLIGHT NOW -
DIRECTV-11 Scheduled for Sea Launch in December, no mention of Echostar 11.
http://spaceflightnow.com/tracking/index.html
Changed - I've moved DirecTV but I have left Echostar for now, as SFN usually misses a few launches out.
EDIT: According to Steven Pietrobon's Space Archive (not really the most accurate website, but it can be useful - http://www.sworld.com.au/steven/space/uscom-man.txt ), Echostar is also scheduled for December. I doubt if SL can complete a 1-month turnaround, but I'll list them both as December for now.

The launch of AMOS 3 satellite is currently planned for March 12th, 2008...

Thanks Anik.

I think you can remove the April listing for DIRECTV-11, and also remove Echostar-11 from 2007. Found info to support a December target date for DIRECTV-11 at the FAA website. Link to supporting document is:

Read last page to confirm this info.

Seems to be quite a quiet time for Sea Launch, in terms of delays, etc, but I guess that this is because they aren't launching anything at the moment.
I've made the changes suggested by ScoBuck.

Thuraya 3 has been delayed to November. No public announcement anticipated any time soon.

No, this schedule is only for the launches handled by Sea Launch & Land Launch. These partnerships handle commercial launches. For government launches, see Anik's Russian launch schedule:

With Thuraya's delay to November it is hard to believe they will have two launches this year. Best turnaround for subsequent launches was 51 days in 2001. Best they managed last year was 56 days.
-
Let's wait and see how fast they can turn it around after Thuraya. A late October launch could result in a two-month turnaround for a DirecTV launch somewhere around Christmas.

Huh, no mention of Telstar 11N (http://space.skyrocket.de/index_frame.htm?http://space.skyrocket.de/doc_sdat/telstar-11n.htm)
No contract yet.
I listed Zenit-3SLB as a probable launch vehicle, as the satellite is based on SSL's 1300LL bus, which is especially optimized for the Land Launch Zenit-3SLB (hence the LL suffix)
-
I see, thanks! Cool site you've got there, btw!
I imagine that Telstar 11N will end up being renamed to something else (perhaps Anik something or other) by the time it gets launched.

According to info on the FAA page, Telstar 11N is slated for launch in the second quarter of 2008.
I doubt it is true. In December 2007 this launch has been already officially planned in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Does anyone have further info about the second Land Launch mission of 2008?
It will be MeaSat-3a launch in the third quarter.

It looks like Sea Launch has 2 or 3 empty positions for launch in 2009. Which birds may be launched on these seats? Are there any predictions?
Land Launch has 3 planned launches for 2009 and I think this is the max. number for LL.

One could be the Echostar 14 satellite that is scheduled for launch in the second half of 2009 being deployed to the 119 W.L. DBS slot.

My understanding is that Zenit production is still limited to 6 per year and split between LL and SL. With this contraint it appears that SL is sold out in 2009 unless they get some hardware reallocated.

I have never seen any information that Zenit production is limited to 6 per year. I have heard that SeaLaunch missions are constrained by processing and travel times to 6 or 7 per year, and that is why LandLaunch was developed, to allow for additional launches.

Confirmed. Believe very much that production can be ramped significantly. More than other vendors, too.

Unfortunately SL ramped up sales of SL & LL faster than production could support and then got into ugly fight with LL over hardware allocations. Many frakked off customers. They have yet to demonstrate a significately higher production rate and problems still exist. Maybe in a couple of years this may improve as discussed in the article

Given that the time from signing a launch contract to actual launch is generally at least two years, and given that in no recent year has SeaLaunch + Land Launch come even close to 6 or 7 launches, the paragraph above makes no sense. Moreover, until recently, Yuzhnoye had extra Zenits lying around with no customers.
-
On the other hand, what could happen is that two customers could want launch in the same month, and that could cause allocation problems.

That is a problem, which can occur with all other launch providers too.

The basis of my statement is that prior to the NSS-8 SL failure they had oversold 6 or more SL & LL missions without any hardware. They were notifying SL & LL customers prior to the NSS-8 failure of the production problems and significant launch delays for these missions. Obviously having SL grounded for a year due to the NSS-8 failure and losing a couple of customers "helped" the near term production problem. My understanding is that increasing the production from the historical 3-4 launch rate to 6-7 is reasonable, going to 10-11 is another story. Hope this helps.

Afternoon all,
Land Launch utilised a Zenit-2SB60 rocket.
But I stumbled upon references to a 2SB40 and 2SB80. Anyone know what they are for?

Zenit-2SB60 is two-stage rocket for Zenit-3SLB three-stage rocket with DM-SLB upper stage. Zenit-2SB40 is two-stage rocket for Zenit-3SLBF three-stage rocket with Fregat-SB upper stage. I did not see Zenit-2SB80 nowhere.

Only found references to 2SB80 with ukrainian spelling of Zenit.
Does raise question about production volumes if they are not using one common Zenit core.

In 2007 the contract for launch in 2008 Sicral-1B satellite was signed by Sea Launch as this mission is not compatible with Ariane-5 double launch capabilities in some points. Is it still valid in Zenit manifest?

In the July 14th print edition of SpaceNews, there is an overview on the Sea Launch situation after the replacement of Rob Peckham by former CFO Kjell Karlsen. According to this, Sea Launch plans two more launches in 2008, putting "Galaxy 19" and "Sicral 1B" into orbit. Next year, only two Sea Launch misions are planned due to supply-chain issues and the planned overhaul of the commander ship, which takes two months.
Concerning Land Launch, two more missions are plannes in 2008 and three in 2009. The article does not state individual payload assignments.

Directv 12 has been confirmed by the company as being planned for launch in "late 2009" but no launch provider has yet been publicly announced. It is a virtual triplet of D10 (launched by a Proton M/Briz M in summer 2007) and D11 (launched by Sea-Launch this past March). Given that Protons appear to be pretty busy for the next year or so and Sea-Launch may have some slots available, I'd suspect that D12 is at least a candidate for whatever openings Sea-Launch may have or be able to create in their schedule.
EDITED TO ADD: I have also found out that at the time Directv contracted with Sea-Launch in 2005 to launch what turned out to be Directv 11, the contract had an option for a second launch. I suspect this will be invoked for D12 but have not seen that confirmed.

I think Sicral 1B launch is a bit mysterious. There is no clear info about it. It should be launched around November as suggested Mighty-T on his message.
Eutelsat W2A will be launched in the beginnig of 2009.
Eutelsat W7 launch is certain to be in July 2009.
XM-5 is ground spare and may be launched in 2009 or 2010. Sea Launch may position new satellite for the launch in the end of 2009. DirecTV 12 also has option for launch with Zenit 3.

Zenit 2SB60 is the 1st and 2nd stage of the land launch Zenit-3SLB, not a launch vehicle on its own. And Echostar-XV is a 5.5 - 6 ton class satellite, far too heavy for the Z-3SLB.
Perhaps Echostar-XV will be launched on a Sea Launch Zenit-3SL, but this is speculation so far.
-
Lyngsat is not the most accurate source for launch info, it's focused more on satellite usage. If this satellite is launching from Baikonur, the only vehicle capable of launching it is Proton.
Here is a news release from ILS of Echostar buying a launch from them without naming the payload. Perhaps this is Echostar 14.

As far as I know EchoStar has 2 launch contracts with ILS. First contract was for EchoStar 13(CMBStar1), then it was cancelled. Therefore, EchoStar 14 and EchoStar 15 are likely to be launched on Proton.

Sea Launch Partners with Intelsat on Multi-Launch Agreement
http://www.sea-launch.com/news_releases/nr_082011.html
LONG BEACH, Calif., November 20, 2008 -- Sea Launch and Intelsat have signed a multiple launch services contract for five missions on the Sea Launch system, scheduled for execution beginning in late 2010 through 2012.
"We want to thank the Intelsat team for their continued confidence in our team and our launch system," said Kjell Karlsen, president and general manager of Sea Launch. "This agreement demonstrates the long-standing partnership that Sea Launch has developed with Intelsat over several years, featuring eight successful missions to date, most recently the flawless launch of the Galaxy 19 satellite on September 24. This award, from the industrys leading satellite operator, represents a significant addition to the Sea Launch manifest. We are looking forward to executing these five additional missions in support of Intelsats fleet replacement requirements."
"Intelsat has had a long-term relationship with Sea Launch. This year, Sea Launch executed two successful launch missions for Intelsat, delivering our Galaxy 18 and Galaxy 19 spacecraft into orbit which completely refreshed the North American Galaxy fleet," said Ken Lee, Intelsats senior vice president, space systems. "We look forward to working with Sea Launch in the years to come as we introduce new spacecraft, optimized to deliver critical transmission services for our video, voice, network services and government customers."

It looks like there are 3 SL missions in Feb, Aug, and Dec, and 2 LL in Feb and April. That corresponds with 8 Block DM launches, as there are 3 planned on Proton per Anik's Russian schedule.

That is not correct.
Moving off of Land Launch to a much more expensive Proton is not in every company's budget.

Does raise question about production volumes if they are not using one common Zenit core.

ILS Wrests Intelsat Launch Away from Land Launch
http://www.space.com/spacenews/spacenews_briefs.html
"The Intelsat IS-16 satellite will be launched aboard an International Launch Services (ILS) Proton rocket in 2010 under a contract expected to be valued at $75 million, according to industry officials. The deal is the latest example of ILS cutting prices to capture contracts to launch satellites that once would have been considered too small for the heavy-lift Proton vehicle."
-
http://www.space.com/spacenews/spacenews_briefs.html
"O3B has contracted with Sea Launch Co. of Long Beach, Calif., to launch the eight satellites aboard a single vehicle, but the company has recently elected to use the Russian Soyuz rocket operated by Europe's Arianespace consortium as launch provider for the initial eight satellites. Two Soyuz rockets would be required for the eight satellites. A contract with Arianespace has not yet been signed, however.
Switching from Sea Launch to Soyuz would make it easier for O3B to qualify for loan guarantees from France's Coface export credit agency."

Measat 3A launch will be on 22 June. On this launch will be used a Zenit-3F rocket with Fregat-SB upper stage according to http://arms-tass.su/?page=article&aid=70094&cid=125
That's either a badly written article or a major change of plan. Measat was supposed to be launched on a 3SLB, and the 3F being tested was for a weather satellite launch at the end of the year.
A commercial Zenit-3F is a 3SLBF.

Measat 3A launch will be on 22 June. On this launch will be used a Zenit-3F rocket with Fregat-SB upper stage according to http://arms-tass.su/?page=article&aid=70094&cid=125
There is no word that Zenit-3F three-stage rocket will be used for MeaSat-3a satellite in that report. It is nonsense. Malaysian satellite will be launched by Zenit-3SLB three-stage rocket. In that report is just said that after tests Zenit-3F will be returned into the Integration building. And after that the preparation to MeaSat-3a launch will begin.

"O3b will initially launch eight satellites that will be placed in medium earth orbit (8,000 kilometers from the earth), which is some four times closer to the planet than geostationary satellites at over 35,000 kilometers, and accounts for the low latency. Based on O3bs current spectrum allocation in the Ka frequency band, the company has the option to launch many more satellites in the future. This innovative satellite system will cover approximately 70 percent of the worlds population with fiber quality internet connectivity at attractive terms and conditions."

The Russian and Ukrainian experts plan to improve power characteristics of a launch vehicle "Zenit" started within the limits of the project «Land Launch» from the cosmodrome Baikonur to put into orbit heavier satellites, the chief of department of maintenance of insurance of space activity of state enterprise "ЦЭНКИ" Victor Buzykin has declared.
«Now teamwork of the Russian and Ukrainian enterprises for increase of power possibilities of a space-rocket complex «Zenit»is organised. It will allow to raise launch mass into a geotransfer orbit, from 3,6 to 4,5 tons», - Buzykin at the international conference on space insurance in Moscow has told, informs "Interfax".
According to Buzykin, actions for increase in weight of the satellites launched into a geotransfer orbit, will include change of an inclination of orbit, mass reduction of satellites adapters and rocket stages, fuel with the raised power characteristics for upper stage .
He also has informed that annually under the program «Land Launch» from the cosmodrome Baikonur while can be carried out to five rockets "Zenit" that is caused by the limited production potentialities of Ukrainian enterprise "Yuzhmash" which does a rocket, and the Russian enterprise "Energomash" - the manufacturer of the engine for the first stage of "Zenit".

Sea Launch Signs Agreement with EchoStar
http://www.sea-launch.com/news_releases/2010/nr_100722.html
LONG BEACH, Calif., July 22, 2010 Sea Launch Company, a leading provider of launch services to the commercial satellite industry, has signed an agreement with a subsidiary of EchoStar Satellite Services L.C.C., a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation (Nasdaq: SATS), providing EchoStar with the ability to launch up to three satellites on the Sea Launch system.
Sea Launch expects to launch the satellites using the reliable Zenit-3SL launch vehicle from its equatorial launch site at 154 degrees West Longitude, in international waters of the Pacific Ocean. Sea Launch has successfully launched previous EchoStar satellites, including EchoStar IX in 2003.
"We are very excited to have the opportunity to launch new spacecraft for EchoStar," said Kjell Karlsen, president and general manager of Sea Launch. "This new agreement reinforces our long-term relationship with EchoStar."
"EchoStar is pleased to have completed successful launches with Sea Launch in the past, which give us confidence in Sea Launchs ability to execute on future launches," said Dean Olmstead, president of EchoStar Satellite Services. "The Sea Launch Zenit-3SL vehicle has been a reliable, flight-proven launch system and we look forward to continued success."
This is one of several new launch agreements that Sea Launch has signed recently, building a healthy manifest as the company moves forward toward successfully exiting Chapter 11 in the third quarter of 2010. On May 10, 2010, Sea Launch filed its Plan of Reorganization and Disclosure Statement. Sea Launch anticipates court confirmation of its Plan of Reorganization at a hearing in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, scheduled for July 27, 2010.

Sea Launch Signs Agreement with EchoStar
http://www.sea-launch.com/news_releases/2010/nr_100722.html
Announcement is primarily a PR stunt. Two weeks ago SL filed with the bankruptcy court to reject the Echostar contract with 4 options remaining. A few days later the rejection was pulled by SL. Last week, SL submitted filings to the court which listed the cure value of the Echo contract as only $1! Obviously contract was modified for three of the options at not cost and at pricing unlikely to be used.
The old saying of "The contract isn't worth the paper its printed on." is very accurate in this case. But, the PR value is priceless....
-
http://www.spaceflightnow.com/news/n1007/27sealaunch/
Sea Launch's backlog now includes four firm contracts, including the AsiaSat deal, an Intelsat satellite launch, and agreements for two flights with Eutelsat payloads. The manifest doesn't include unannounced contracts or the conditional EchoStar agreement.
The next flight of a Land Launch rocket will occur between January and March of 2011 with the Intelsat 18 communications satellite. Sea Launch's next mission from the Pacific Ocean is scheduled for the third quarter of 2011, Karlsen said.

SN: Russias Energia To Own 95 Percent of New Sea Launch (http://www.spacenews.com/launch/100728-energia-own-sealaunch.html)
Karlsen said Sea Launch, now freed of the substantial debt as a result of the Chapter 11 reorganization, will be profitable with as few as two launches per year, although it expects to ramp up activity to perform four launches in 2012 and five in 2013.
Several commercial satellite operators have voiced support for Sea Launch, and four Intelsat of Luxembourg and Washington; Eutelsat of Paris; AsiaSat of Hong Kong; and EchoStar of Englewood, Colo. have signed various commitments to use Sea Launch in the next few years.

International consortium Sea Launch plans to resume Zenit-3SL carrier rocket launches from its floating platform in the Pacific Ocean in 2011, the head of the Russian Rocket and Space Corporation Energia said Monday.
"All political conditions for resuming launches on the Sea Launch program have been met. All commissions in the United States have been passed. A license for 70 launches has been received," Vitaly Lopota said.
"There are enough contracts for satellite launches. The first launch is due at the end of next year," he told journalists.

Karlsen said a Zenit vehicle to be used to launch the Intelsat 18 satellite for Washington- and Luxembourg-based Intelsat in early 2011 is almost completed, and that the production line is sufficiently robust to produce two more Zenit vehicles in time for launches in September and November 2011.

Eutelsat, the planned return to flight customer on Sea Launch conducted a launch vehicle hardware audit and determined that this was not likely. Energia was still playing smoke and mirrors on production hardware.
The Glonass failure investigation identified Energia for the Block DM overloading due to Energia having systemic management, quality and oversight errors (red flags for whatever the heck that all covers) as the cause of the Glonass launch failure. This also does not provide any confidence or credibility of Energia's plans on Sea Launch.
The Eutelsat AB7 mission in 2011 planned for Sea Launch has been moved to Ariane.

Sea Launch... Moving On Up...
[SatNews] Energia Logistics Ltd. (ELUS) has named Kirk Pysher as Chief Operating Officer, effective November 6, 2010. Energia Logistics Ltd. is a newly formed organization that is responsible for all aspects of satellite integration and launch operations for Sea Launch Zenit-3SL missions. In this role, Pysher will lead a highly experienced operations and engineering team in support of ELUS charter to manage hardware production, provide engineering services and deliver launch services to Sea Launch AG and its customers in the satellite operator community. Pysher comes to Energia Logistics Ltd. with more than 25 years of space experience. Prior to his current position, Pysher worked for the Boeing Company where his most recent assignment was Vice President and Chief Systems Engineer of the Sea Launch Company, L.L.C. Under his leadership, Pysher addressed and successfully managed the myriad of technical issues that arise during the normal course of a launch service campaign. Prior to his Sea Launch assignment, Pysher played an integral role at The Boeing Company in support of the design, development and operation of the Delta family of launch vehicles.

SES + Sea Launch... From Sea To Space (Launch)
Sea Launch homepage[SatNews] There's a possibility this Company may well start to launch some of their satellites from an ocean-based facility.
SES S.A., a leading worldwide satellite operator (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG), and Sea Launch have announced that they have entered into a framework understanding regarding possible cooperation on the future launch of SES satellites on Sea Launch launch vehicles. Romain Bausch, CEO of SES, noted, We have always considered the launch vehicle system provided by Sea Launch to be an important participant in the commercial arena of heavy-lift launch providers. Given our desire for a vibrant and competitive launch service market, we are pleased to see a new Sea Launch emerging and re-engaging.
Under the framework understanding announced today, Sea Launch has agreed to provide SES with detailed technical information regarding its launch vehicle system on a regular basis. In turn, SES has agreed based on the success of upcoming launch missions already on the Sea Launch manifest to consider Sea Launch as an SES recognized provider for future launch missions. Kjell Karlsen, President of Sea Launch, stated, We are excited to re-establish our relationship with SES. The understanding we have reached clearly reflects the confidence that SES has in the Sea Launch system and our ability to provide cost-effective, reliable launch services to the worlds most demanding customers.
SES notes that Sea Launch has put in place an exceptional business team and a new credible structure backed by its affiliate, Energia Logistics Ltd, both key steps to moving its business forward. Bausch concluded, We congratulate Sea Launch on their return to the launch service business, and we look forward to successful launches of SES satellites in the future.

Launch providers, of course, fear that the additional supply, coupled with forecasts for diminished demand, could lead to a rationalization as McKenna fears. One potential sign is the future of Land Launch, a venture that uses a variant of Sea Launchs Zenit-3SL launched from Baikonur, serving smaller GEO satellites in competition with Soyuz and, now, Falcon 9. Sea Launchs Karlsen said that there are no Land Launch missions on the books after a mission for Intelsat planned for later this year. After that, we have to sort out what to do with Land Launch, he said. At this point in time, Im not certain that Land Launch is competitive in the marketplace for those kinds of satellites.
The question facing the industry is whether, in a few years, other launch systems will be in the same situation as Land Launch, if too many vehicles chase too few launches in this market.

Its SeaLaunch vs LandLaunch to obtain engines from Energomash. Note that the lawsuit only concerns RD-171M, and not RD-120. Anyone know why?
Also, the article calls the KSLV engine the "RD-191" and claims that the engine costs as much as the RD-171M. I have suspected that the RD-161 that is normally the brand name of the Korean engine is just that, a brand name for the export version of the RD-191.

SHIPMENTS OF SEA LAUNCH ZENIT-3SL HARDWARE RESUME ON SCHEDULE (http://www.sea-launch.com/news_releases/2011/nr_110531.html)
BERN, Switzerland, May 31, 2011 – Sea Launch has resumed shipments of Zenit-3SL hardware in preparation for its return to launch operations in the third quarter of 2011. The two-stage Zenit-2S booster, manufactured by PO Yuzhmash of Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine and the Block-DM-SL manufactured by OAO Rocket and Space Corporation Energia of Moscow, Russian Federation departed the Port of Oktyabrsky on May 31, 2011 for transit to Sea Launch Home Port facilities in Long Beach, California where launch vehicle integration and combined operations take place.
Production oversight for the Zenit-3SL vehicle is carried out by Energia Logistics, with facilities in Moscow (“ELRF”) and Long Beach, California (“ELUS”). Energia Logistics' responsibilities focus on closely monitoring hardware production schedules with regular visits to contractor and subcontractor facilities alongside Sea Launch customers to verify and assure on-time delivery and performance.
“Sea Launch has ten Zenit-3SL's on order, covering requirements for missions # 31 through # 40 which will satisfy existing and future customer requirements for launches through the end of 2013” said Kjell Karlsen, President of Sea Launch. “We are very pleased with having achieved yet another important milestone towards the resumption of launch operations later this year”.

In its SEC filing, Boeing said it is still seeking reimbursement from two former partners in the Sea Launch commercial space-launch venture. Sea Launch Co. was headquartered for a decade in Long Beach, Calif., with Boeing as the lead investor, before its recent move to Bern, Switzerland, under new ownership.
Sea Launch filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2009. As part of that procedure, Boeing paid certain Sea Launch debts under an agreement that called for the other investors companies in Norway, Russia and Ukraine to then reimburse Boeing their pro rata shares of the debt.
The Norwegian shareholder did so, but the Russian and Ukrainian shareholders have protested Boeings claims. RSC Energia of Korolev, Russia, which took ownership of Sea Launch during the bankruptcy proceedings, owes $223 million, Boeing says. The two operating divisions of Ukraines Yuzhnoye rocket designer and builder owe a combined $133 million.
Boeing sought reimbursement in an arbitration proceeding at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce before that organization claimed it had no jurisdiction in the matter. Boeing has appealed that ruling.
Sea Launch has since emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, having cleared its books of all debt much of it held by Boeing and plans to return to commercial launch operations in September. Yes, but did you read the docs?
This was a "reorganization" not a Chapter 7 "liquidation". I read about 5-10 min. of the plan to exit chapter 11. The company leases are all moved over to SLC ( meaning rent etc.) Also monies owed to Boeing by SLC is still owed. It is written, so it would be wise to pay off Boeing or they could go to any court and lock things up to rust for a few years.
To be bad, they might do this when SLC has some payloads.
This is not good.

SEA LAUNCH SELECTED TO LAUNCH INTELSAT 19
http://www.sea-launch.com/news_releases/2011/nr_110912.html
BERN, Switzerland, September 12, 2011 Sea Launch announced today it will launch the Intelsat 19 communications satellite in early 2012, the first of up to five missions on the Sea Launch system for Intelsat LLC under a previously announced multiple launch services contract.
Built by Space Systems/Loral, the 1300-series Intelsat 19 satellite will be located at 166° E longitude as part of Intelsats on-going fleet investment program. It replaces Intelsat 8, a leading video neighborhood providing distribution to cable headends across the Asia-Pacific region and reaching more than 37 million pay-TV subscribers around the Pacific Rim.
Designed for 15 years of service, Intelsat 19s C-band capacity will provide enhanced distribution of content throughout Asia-Pacific, with reach to the western United States. The increased Ku-band capacity, optimized to distribute services to Australia, will support mobility and enterprise network applications across the Asia-Pacific region. Intelsat 19 is the first of four Intelsat satellites to feature a mobility beam that supports broadband maritime applications. In total, the four satellites will deploy seven Ku-band mobility beams which will result in seamless broadband coverage in support of global shipping, oil and gas, and other maritime requirements.
This is a significant award for Sea Launch. The launch of Intelsat 19 will represent our next strategic advance following the successful return to launch operations on both the Sea Launch and Land Launch systems in the coming weeks, said Kjell Karlsen, president of Sea Launch. Signing with an industry leader like Intelsat validates our customer-focused approach. We look forward to working even closer with the Intelsat and Space Systems/Loral teams in the months ahead.
Sea Launch and Intelsat signed the multiple launch services agreement in April 2010 for up to five missions on the Sea Launch system.

Sea Launch Selected to Launch Eutelsat's W5A Spacecraft
http://www.sea-launch.com/news_releases/2012/nr_120312b.html
BERN, Switzerland, March 12, 2012 Eutelsat has assigned the launch of its EUTELSAT 70B (ex. W5A) communications satellite to Sea Launch to be launched in the fourth quarter of 2012. The launch will occur from Sea Launch's launch platform Odyssey at its equatorial launch site, located at 154 degrees West longitude, in the international waters of the Pacific Ocean.
The EUTELSAT 70B satellite is being built by Astrium, an EADS company and is based on the Eurostar-3000 platform. Weighing over 5,200 kilograms at lift-off, it will be lofted into an optimized geosynchronous transfer orbit on board the Zenit 3SL whose high performance should enable the satellite to exceed its designed in-orbit lifetime of 15 years.
EUTELSAT 70B is designed to optimise resources from a single orbital slot at the crossroads between Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. With high frequency reuse, four powerful regional beams connected to 48 Ku-band transponders will be located on a single platform. It will more than double current Eutelsat capacity at 70.5° East for data and government services, broadband access, GSM backhauling and professional video exchanges.
"Our close coordination with RSC Energia in assuring production scheduling and mission assurance for Sea Launch missions continues to provide value for our customers", said Kjell Karlsen, President of Sea Launch AG. "We are very pleased to be selected by Eutelsat for this important mission."
David Bair, Eutelsat Chief Technical Officer added "Sea Launch and RSC Energia executed a flawless launch of our EUTELSAT 7 West A satellite in October 2011. We look forward to working closely with the team again on the EUTELSAT 70B campaign and to seeing this new satellite strengthen our in-orbit resources and flexibility."
Sea Launch to Launch the Intelsat 27 Spacecraft
http://www.sea-launch.com/news_releases/2012/nr_120312a.html
Bern, Switzerland, March 12, 2012 Sea Launch has been selected to launch the Intelsat 27 communications satellite in early 2013. Intelsat 27 will be placed into an optimized geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO) utilizing the highly-proven Sea Launch Zenit 3SL launch system. The launch will occur from Sea Launch's launch platform Odyssey at its equatorial launch site, located at 154 degrees West longitude, in the international waters of the Pacific Ocean.
Built by Boeing Satellite Systems Inc., the 702-MP Intelsat 27 satellite will serve Intelsat's customers throughout the Americas and Europe, and will provide increased and enhanced capacity for media, network and government services. It will be located at 304.5 degrees East, and is designed for 15 years of service.
At the time of lift-off, the spacecraft will weigh approximately 6,241 kilograms, making it the heaviest spacecraft to be lifted by the Sea Launch Zenit-3SL launch system.
"Following on to our recent announcement on the award of the Intelsat 21 launch, Sea Launch looks forward to working hard towards the successful launch of Intelsat 27 in early 2013," said Kjell Karlsen, President of Sea Launch. "With the continued support of our parent organization, RSC Energia, Sea Launch is regaining momentum and executing on its Business Plan."
"With six satellites scheduled for launch in the next year, a diversity of reliable solutions for Intelsat's access to space is essential," said Thierry Guillemin, Intelsat's SVP and Chief Technical Officer. "We are pleased to rely on Sea Launch once again to support some of these critical missions."
Sea Launch and Intelsat signed a multiple launch services agreement for up to five missions on the Sea Launch system in 2010.

"I presented this idea during a visit to our factory Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin [my comment: on January 15, i.e., BEFORE the failure], - Lopota said to "Izvestiya" - No answer yet, but, in our view, the deal is beneficial for the state. Russia will get its own launch site on the equator for relatively little money. The volume of current liabilities "Sea Launch" today is a little more than $ 300 million"
[Later in the article Lopota says]:
to date, the portfolio of Sea Launch has 12 starts, a number of orders is under discussion.
[my comment Id love to see the list ;) ]
[another quote from Lapota, specifically difficult to translate]:
We would like to have state support not only in the form of taking full responsibility of Sea Launch project. As a support, they could give us, for example, a pair of starts in the Federal Space Program. The government of Kazakhstan limited number of launches from Baikonur. Therefore, Sea Launch could be an alternative to alleviate this limitation.
[Izvestia could not get an official response to Lapotas statement]:
In Roskosmos officials declined to comment.
[The article also gives unnamed source in Russian Space Agency]:
The "Energia" recently had difficulties with raising funds for refinancing "Sea Launch". In December 2012, Sberbank declined a loan of $ 200 million.
Voiced by Lapota amount "Sea Launch" debt of $ 300 million is questionable. Six months ago, we estimated debt of the project as $ 530 million
[Izvestia quotes Yuri Koptev, the former head of Russian Space Agency]:
As far as I know, today Sea Launch has only two satellite launches booked.
=============
Square brackets = my comments.
One last detail Lopota said that to become profitable Sea Launch needs to perform at least 6 launches per year. As I get it, they got no profit last year.
Bottom line: Looks like this failure puts Sea Launch in serious trouble. May be Elon Musk should consider, along with Boca Chica plans, buying their platform. But, this is topic for another thread -

From Echostar 10-K
In addition, in connection with the Hughes Acquisition, we acquired contractual rights to receive $44 million in cash discounts on future launch services (Credits) and assigned an estimated fair value of $22 million to the Credits on the acquisition date, which was recorded in Other noncurrent assets, net. In November 2012, we entered into an agreement for alternative launch services and determined that the potential to realize value from the Credits was less than previously estimated. Based on an updated fair value estimate using unobservable inputs that considered factors such as the viability of the launch services provider and marketability of the Credits, we recognized a $22 million impairment loss to reduce the carrying amount of the Credits to their estimated fair value of approximately zero as of December 31, 2012.

- How true appeared in the media about the possible purchase of "Sea Launch" state?
[ Lopota: ]Such statements that are attributed to me, do not. The fact that it is widely discussed in the press can be attributed to the conductors of unfair competition within the country. At a meeting in RSC "Energia", which is held in January Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin noted that the project "Sea Launch" - for now the only real project using technology that will allow our country in a reasonably short period of time and in an acceptable state for funding create a super-heavy carrier is required to address future challenges of research and exploration of deep space (Moon, Mars, asteroids, and so on). These technologies already have the necessary flight availability and can be incorporated in the next generation of promising for Russian launch vehicles.
Due to a number of publications, which distort the true state of work on "Sea Launch" in the Russian press, the company "Boeing" went to court in California. In this situation dealt with lawyers.

Sea Launch and EchoStar Reach Preliminary Agreement for Launch Services
Launch scheduled to take place in 2015
http://www.sea-launch.com/news-q11356-Sea_Launch_and_EchoStar_Reach_Preliminary_Agreement_for_Launch_Services.aspx
Bern, Switzerland and Englewood, Colorado, March 18, 2013 - Sea Launch AG and EchoStar Satellite Services, a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corp. (NASDAQ: SATS), have announced that Sea Launch has been identified as the intended launch services provider for the launch of a satellite from the ocean-based Odyssey launch platform in 2015.
Sea Launchs powerful Zenit-3SL vehicle is ideally suited for launching heavyweight-class spacecraft, with multiple restart capability and heavy-lift performance. Sea Launchs history with EchoStar dates back to 2003. Most recently it launched the EchoStar XI satellite.
Sergey Gugkaev, chief executive officer of Sea Launch, said, Sea Launch welcomes the opportunity to support EchoStars launch requirement in 2015. Kjell Karlsen, president of Sea Launch, added, We are pleased to extend our relationship with EchoStar and we look forward to providing the required flexibility, performance and diversity of supply necessary to support their business plan.
This preliminary agreement with Sea Launch provides EchoStar with the flexibility we require to accommodate our launch requirements as we undertake the expansion of our North American fleet," said Anders Johnson, president of EchoStar Satellite Services. We have been pleased with Sea Launchs performance on past missions and look forward to continued success.

Space International Services (SIS) will launch the Amos-4 communication satellite
Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) has once again selected Space International Services for its commercial launch services to orbit the Amos-4 satellite in 2013 for Spacecom (Israel), the Amos satellite fleet operator. Amos-4 will be the second Israeli satellite launched by Space International Services using Zenit-3SLB launch vehicle, following Amos-3 orbited in 2008. The satellite's weight at launch will be approximately 4.2 tons, demonstrating the significant increase in Zenit-3SLB performance.
The newest addition to the Spacecom's current Amos constellation Amos-4 will offer customers Direct-To-Home (DTH), video distribution, VSAT communications and broadband Internet. Once the Amos-4 satellite launched, Spacecom will reach a big portion of the world's population, positioning the company as near global satellite services provider.

We are confident in the return of Sea Launch. We may not fly on Sea Launch this year but there will be two Zenit flights to verify the system again, Karlsen said, referring to the Zenit variant that launches from Baikonur. One launch will be commercial, he said later, and the other will be for the Russian government.

Sea Launch Announces Agreement for Launch Services
http://www.sea-launch.com/news-q11371-Sea_Launch_Announces_Agreement_for_Launch_Services.aspx
Bern, Switzerland, September 6, 2013 - Sea Launch AG today announced the signing of a launch services agreement with a proprietary customer to launch its spacecraft on the Sea Launch Zenit-3SL launch system, launching from the ocean-based Odyssey launch platform in 2016.
Sea Launchs customer for this launch has expressed its desire to remain unnamed at the present time, consistent with its current business strategy. Sea Launch anticipates a future joint announcement with its customer when notified that the applicable business restraints have been lifted.
This launch will continue to demonstrate the evolution of the Zenit-3SL launch system going forward. We offer our customers the reliability, flexibility and discretion required to best address their on-orbit business needs, said Sergey Gugkaev, Chief Executive Officer of Sea Launch.

EUTELSAT 3B Mission Status Update
March 31, 2014
During the final dry roll-out phase of integrated launch vehicle (ILV) processing at Home Port in support of the EUTELSAT 3B mission, a discrepancy in the nominal movement of the cable-mast and the Zenit-2S LV lateral plate occurred while installing the ILV onto the launch pad. This caused mechanical damage to the lateral plate housing located on the inter-stage truss of the LV. Resolution of this condition will result in a delay to the planned April 15, 2014 launch date.
A decision was made to de-mate the Payload Unit and Block-DM-SL onboard the Sea Launch Commander to resolve the issue, establish the root cause and perform additional checks of the interface between the launch vehicle and ground support equipment connectors.
Once the above tasks have been completed, Sea Launch will announce an updated schedule and launch day for EUTELSAT 3B.
The EUTELSAT 3B satellite was not powered on during the operation on the launch vehicle and was unaffected. It remains in a safe configuration.

I guess they could adapt the Land Launch fairing, and switch to Lutch, but I believe the Lutch data hole is exactly on the easter Pacific.

Anatoly Zak has an interesting view on this as Russia in the past has said that by having it based out of Russian Territory closer to the factory they could increase launch rate and thus shift some Russian sats to it. It is also been mentioned that the major upgrades underway/in works for entire launcher are in part to reduce heavy reliance on Proton-M and Angara by providing a form of redundancy.

Well, whatever the view Zak has, it's safe to say that barring an outright Russian invasion of the rest of Ukraine, I don't see a legal basis for Yuzhmash/Yuzhnoe to deliver a Zenit to a Russian company in Crimea. They will either need some kind of waiver, or will be criminally liable for a breach of Ukrainian law "On occupied territories".
So, whoever pushes this "relocation to Crimea" thing is in reality looking to murder the program.

Sea Launch Takes Proactive Steps to Address Manifest Gap
NYON, Switzerland, August 22, 2014 Sea Launch announced today a series of cost-reduction measures designed to address an upcoming gap in the launch manifest of the Zenit-3SL system. According to plan, it is expected that Sea Launch will resume and start stepping-up its launch activity during mid-2015/mid-2016 time frame.
The measures include staff reductions at Sea Launchs headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland and its prime contractor, Energia Logistics, Ltd., located in Long Beach, California, as well as a reduction of operating expenses associated with laying-up the Sea Launch Commander and Odyssey vessels. Taking these vessels out of service temporarily during inactive periods has been performed by Sea Launch previously and is common practice in the marine industry.
Sea Launch will be using this time to improve certain operational efficiencies, upgrade its launch and support systems including evaluating shore-based power for the vessels while in port and finalize internal trade studies relative to available vehicle configuration changes.
Serguei Gugkaev, CEO of Sea Launch stated In light of this gap in our launch manifest, Sea Launch is taking the opportunity to pursue all prudent business solutions to realize significant cost savings in labor, maintenance and fuel while maintaining the capability to call-up the vessels as needed. Sea Launch continues to aggressively market all available launch opportunities beginning in mid-2015 and will maintain a short launch call-up readiness state. While any reduction in staff is regrettable, Sea Launch will retain key personnel across all corporate and technical functions, allowing the company to ramp-up to meet its next launch commitment.

That's interesting, as they had talked about this sometime last year, and decided against it.
I was talking to some people the other day, and it was "leaked" that they'd like to sell the operation, but nobody is interested in buying.
Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens.....
-
Here are some Sea Launch images which I suspect are new - aerial and ground-level shots of Sea Launch Commander on the ways at the Kvaerner Govan (ex-Fairfields, ex-UCS) shipyard in Glasgow in 1997. Other than those with detailed copyright holders, this selection of pictures are all 'orphan' images, with no obvious owner, but if I discover the source/owner (I'm actively asking) then I'll post here.
Also in the pictures you will see HMS Ocean (more-or-less a baby aircraft carrier for helicopter operations). Sea Launch Commander, at 50,000 tons, is no small vessel. It has a large internal assembly hall, with two high capacity cranes for launcher assembly and a third for payload and upper stage assembly. The interior of the hall contains a standard railway system, allowing cargo to be delivered directly into the working area.
The rather poor pictures which show Sea Launch Commander going down the Clyde were taken by myself on, I believe, her delivery voyage; the stunning night shot on the ways was taken by noted maritime photographer Bill Cullen.
-
Yep, she's a fine ship.
Rides nice even in heavy seas, although we usually went around any extreme weather.
-
I understand that Sea Launch Commander has an unusual thruster system for attitude control in even heavy weather - rather than edge-mounted thrusters (like the SpaceX barge presumably has, given the few details we have). The SLC thrusters are based on a ventral turret instead, which I think is quite unusual.
-
There's two bow thrusters located in the "bulb" on the front of the hull, and a stern thruster that gets lowered down at the launch site. These are used for the Dynamic Positioning System that keeps the ship pretty well pinned down during launch operations.
AFAIK, they stern thruster has to be retracted when the ship is moving at more than a few knots.
-
Ah, I was told everything was done using a single turret - this was from, however, an ex-Kvaerner engineer whose grasp of the detail may have been sloppy! Still, not a 'thruster at each corner' arrangement, even so.
-
That would be more like the Launch Platform.
It has a thruster in the front of each pontoon, and one that looks like a ducted fan at the stern end of each pontoon.
-
They should sell the launch platform to SpaceX, who could then use it to launch Falcon 9s to the ISS a few hundred miles off the west coast of the US. The southern launch azimuth to 51.6 degrees is clear over water all the way to Chile as I recall.
-
SpaceX has been to Home Port several times.
The only thing they were interested in was using the Payload Processing Facility.
To refit both ships for Falcon 9 launch duty would cost a LOT of money, most likely way more than Mr. Musk would be wiling to spend.
-
I think it would be far less expensive to build a new launch platform from scratch, rather than adapting the existing one for another rocket !
Remind the mess for adapting Plesetsk's Zenit launch pad for Angara...
-
Yes, Zenit has a very complicated fully automatic launch operation. Besides, until SpaceX migrates to a GPS/TDRSS "range", they really can't do that. What would enable, is something like 5 tonnes to GTO from a Falcon 9 v.1.1. But at what cost? I'm pretty sure that SpaceX knows a thing or two about far away launch sites to optimize performance. You know... burned once.
-
Well, both the Zenit and the Falcon 9 are all LOX/kerosene vehicles, of similar cross-sections and dimensions. Neither vehicle has solid strap-ons, so it doesn't seem like the conversion of the Sea Launch platform to Falcon 9 use should be so out-of-the-question as some of these comments seem to depict.
-
It gets into a bit more than just fuel and the approximate size of the two launch vehicles.
ALL the mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment on the Odyssey for moving, erecting, fueling, monitoring, and operating the rocket is Russian or Ukrainian built, and would have to be scrapped and replaced.
Same with the Commander, along with the large "Proton" antenna, the telemetry and command equipment, and all the support equipment for the Block-DM.
And those are just the things that I know about.
The only "American" equipment was the weather systems, everything concerned with the Payload Accommodation, the payload telemetry and command equipment, the photo stuff, the computer networking equipment, half the Launch Control Center, and several other systems that escape me now.
It would be a monumental task to switch both ships to a different launcher. Impossible? No, but very expensive. Keep in mind all this equipment is 15+ years old, has been operated in a marine environment for all that time, and has been sitting powered down for going on six months.
-

To refit both ships for Falcon 9 launch duty would cost a LOT of money, most likely way more than Mr. Musk would be wiling to spend.
how can the company even try and sell?
the buyer would have to deal with the Russian government no?
can see some US Billionaire just go out there for the ship...it has a lot of special features.
-
Btw, does anyone know if the Falcon 9 can take the handling stresses of sea transfer, for example? If I had to bet on how to do a Falcon 9 sea launch platform, it would probably look a lot like a flat pad and the rocket would be integrated into a TEL in the hangar of the support ship, which then would be moved directly to the platform as a whole. And that's just the physical part.
GSE, range and all that would need to be new. I'm pretty sure that starting from the ground up would be cheaper and faster.
-
Handling stress not really a factor. Sea Launch performs all ILV movements in the harbor so it is basically a standard vertical pick. As kq6ea stated, the support equipment is where all the $$ is at. It would require a complete gut and rebuild of the comm and range systems and all the pad GSE. Probably easier to just start with a clean slate.
-
Yes, the idea of transferring an ILV "at sea" (at the launch site) was given up almost immediately.
Boeing had approached the administrators of Kiritimati about improving the port there, but the price quoted just to be allowed to do the work (fees, etc) was considered too high.
The Commander usually carried a complete rocket and Block-DM, but they were only used (rarely) for spare parts if there was a problem at the launch site.
-
Even if for free its still way too expensive to use.
I was referring the berth and the land facilities and not the two ships.
Ships may be going to South America.

Looks like the last Sea Launch passenger is gone as the Russians are speaking of switching AngolaSat to the 2nd Angara-A5 in 2016: http://www.interfax.ru/russia/434256
(though there are rumors that the satellite's CDR hasn't even been passed yet and it won't launch till 2019, which doesn't help Sea Launch either)
I presume this will sink Sea Launch and Zenit once and for all.

I saw that last week in another thread.
Be real interesting to see if they can pull this off.....

However, there was a slight hiccup with the deal when an unsecured creditor popped up, causing an issue which is now being dealt with in an American court.
Minor little fraction of a billion dollar quibble. Oh, and, how do those sats get encapsulated? Hmm.
And where do all those funds come from to feed to Energia and why should SDO Yuzhnoye / PO Yuzhmash care, having been washed out? How do they field a vehicle at today's launch prices?
Love the entertaining tidbits of the SeaLaunch dirge that spring up. Another fairy story...

Yuzhmash details Zenit production
On January 11, the Yuzhmash production plant in Dnipro, Ukraine, announced that under an April 2017 contract with S7 Sea Launch Limited, the company had already been manufacturing two Zenit rockets for delivery in 2018. The company was also expecting an additional order for three more Zenit rockets in February 2018, Yuzhmash said.

Source: "Sea Launch" plan to relocate from the United States to the Far East
MOSCOW, Apr 16 - RIA News. Launch platform "Sea Launch" can relocate from California to the Far East, a source in the rocket and space industry told RIA Novosti.
"The possibility of relocating the Sea Launch platform to the Far East, specifically to Sovetskaya Gavan, for launching the Soyuz-5 light rocket, is being considered," the agencys source said.
According to him, if the launch platform remains in the United States, it will be almost impossible to launch a new Russian rocket from it, since the agreement between Moscow and Washington provides for the launch of the Russian-Ukrainian Zenit rocket, which was discontinued in 2014. Even if in the future it is possible to sign a new intergovernmental agreement, the Russian side will have to disclose the technical documentation on the new rocket to the American supervisory authorities in order to obtain a launch license, which Moscow will not do, the source said.
The only way out is to relocate the Sea Launch to Russian territory, he stressed.
This is not the first time that the idea of relocating the Sea Launch to the Far East is being considered. The issue of changing the port was discussed in 2013 and 2015. Then, Vladivostok, Sovetskaya Gavan, Crimea and Vietnam were considered as the location of the launch platform and command ship. As a result, the project was sold to the S7 group of companies.
Get a comment in the S7 group and its space division S7 Space and failed. In "Roskosmos" refrained from commenting.
Waiver of "Zenit"
At the end of March, it became known that the contract for the production of 12 Zenit rocket launchers for the launch from the Sea Launch launch site would be terminated on the Ukrainian Yuzhmash. The company S7 Sea Launch Limited (part of the S7 group, which owns the floating launch site "Sea Launch") and "Yuzhmash" signed a contract for 12 "Zenit" in April 2017.
Earlier, the director general of the state corporation Dmitry Rogozin told RIA Novosti that Roskosmos together with the S7 group plans to create a reusable Soyuz-5 Light commercial launch vehicle based on the Soyuz-5 rocket, the first launch of which from the Baikonur cosmodrome is scheduled in 2022 .
Rogozin also said that he had invited co-owner of the S7 group, Vladislav Filev, to participate in late April in negotiations on the prospects for the Baiterek project, which would launch Soyuz-5 (Irtysh) missiles from the Baikonur cosmodrome.

Sad to be destroying fairings on the same day SpaceX re-used theirs
-
Yeah, I saw that on FB, and it saddened me greatly. All the care we put into handling those, and then to see it dragged across the parking lot.......
-
The SEA-LAUNCH fairing was from Boeing.
In Baikonur another was used.
Probably this fairing should not be exported to Russia.
So there is no longer any use for it.
-
Since Sea Launch is now Russian owned and relocating there, we don't really need a separate manifest for any future missions they may perform.
