Huh.  Funny that ISRO should describe their two spaceflight participants as 'space tourists'.  The only explanation that comes to mind is that they are two Indian private citizens who wanted to fly in space and have had ISRO broker the deal with Roscosmos, rather than 'official' ISRO astronauts (who would be more likely referred to as mission specialists).

I'm guessing that, as they didn't do this through Space Adventures, this will be free-flying rather than a rendezvous with the ISS.  How long can the TMA operate autonimously with a full crew? The cynic in me wonders if this deal was arranged in exchange for a 'contribution' to ISRO's costs from the spaceflight participants.  Nothing wrong in that, of course, but it might be the first of a new market in commercial space pleasure flights.

FWIW, I think that an Almaz/Proton would be a bit better choice than a TMA for something like this.  There would be more room to bounce around in and a longer mission duration.

I think this is the opposite. All the information here is coming from Russia, namely from Alexei Krasnov. The Russians have just called the ISRO astronauts "tourists", as they did more or less for the Malaysian and for the Korean guys.

Of course when the information will come from India, they will be called Flight Engineers.

The word space tourist doesn't sound proper in this context. ISRO wants it's astronauts to have some experience before it launches it's own manned mission an year after this particular Soyuz flight. The Indian OV will have a lot of resemblence to soyuz except that it willn't have an orbital module for now. The Russians are even helping ISRO build it's astronaut training centre.

From NK website (today) :

Indian Cosmonauts will not Fly in Russian Soyuz.

Head of Roscosmos Human Spaceflight Directorate Alexey Krasnov told news media at Baikonur that India had given up their idea about flying two cosmonauts of this country in Russian Soyuz.
ISRO considered this approach as an intermediate step in the national human spaceflight program aimed at launching their cosmonauts in an Indian rocket in 2015.
Krasnov clarified that the Indians had been interested in a mission without docking to the International Space Station.
On the other hand, Krasnov noted, India is eager to maintain space cooperation with Russia, including human space missions, RIA Novosti informs.
