I was there...took a while for the adrenalin spike from the two-seconds of main engine firing to bleed off, hehe.
A little "trivia" question for fellow nit-pickers...What was the "noticeable misnomer" in the video clip?

Cool, read about it in Mike Mullane's book. he sounded  pretty frakked.

Rather interesting the sounds the SSMEs make when they are shutting back down.
Visit Stennis.  It's the same.  I think the public can still get in for tests on the buses.  I'm guessing the sound is the purges (check valves chattering in the hundreds of Hz).  I'm hoping it's not the turbopumps.
If I like something on NSF, it's probably because I know it to be accurate.  Every once in a while, it's just something I agree with.  Facts generally receive the former.

MKremer use the link I posted above to hear the full audio without commentary on the shuttlesource.com archives wehre  the 41-D tape has been uploaded as broadcast.
Thanks very much, and thank you shuttlesource.com :)

(That said, I still wish more audio files were available without even the PAO commentary. ie- is it *really* necessary for the PAO to countdown from 10 seconds and then constantly through ignition and then talk almost constantly through the first dozen or so seconds after liftoff?)

This is especially annoying because it's always such public affairs fluff: "Liftoff, liftoff of the Space Shuttle Discovery on its Nth mission to the International Space Station," or whatever.

It's clear that they're hoping to inform people who have just wandered into the room going "huh, a launch, what's going on?" but they're doing a disservice to the viewers who actually have a clue. It's not even as if much of a clue is needed.

As for the aborts of this type, there have been 5 total, and I was thinking  a few weeks ago of doing a thread pulling all 5 together:

41-D 6/26/94 Discovery T- 4 seconds
51-F 7/12/85 Challenger T-3 seconds
STS-55 3/22/93 Columbia T-3 seconds
STS-51 8/12/93 Discovery T-3 seconds
STS-68 8/18/94 Endeavour T-1 second

There are online videos of the STS-51 and STS-68 aborts somewhere that  I was sent if anyone has not seen those before either.

Would love to see them.  How about uploading them here?
